I didn't get it at first, I thought all of the young ladies in white were the Czars daughters, and the one falling in love with the Capt. was also one of the daughters. I get it now, but who was the young beautiful women nursing the Capt. back to health that was also in love with him. A great movie in spite of the dubbing from the original language. Being an American we were always taught to distrust the Russians, but I have at an old age now come to realize that aside from the Bolsheviks, they are the same as me with a long deep history, of people wanting the best for themselves and their country.

I am truly amazed to read the comments as I am at odds with them. As a Russian film enthusiast, this must be the worst. The dubbing into American ruins the feel and an officer and gentleman in those times would never use swear words within earshot of a lady. Furthermore, restoring the family's prerevolutionary home means living in the past, materialism. I've seen too many immigrants live in their new country whilst raising their children "in the old times" including denying that they are anything else, refusing to evolve. This causes many children to have a confused sense of identity leading to emotional and psychological problems, especially when the parents get depressed and commit suicide. This film reached the wrong values.

As a man, it's one of those movies where your waiting for a crazy bloody war scene so you can justify having watched it..also who got pregnant in the movie give birth to the great great grandson if the "great great grandfather died in battle? also the older female owner of the vintage vehicle would have been over a hundred if her father was the original owner of the car and she being one of the girls in the photo, also why was it his great great grandfather but her father? They wouldn't have been born in the same time period to fall in love.

with some light, especially the very good acting (there is a long &glorious tradition in Russia), it's remind me of Rosso Di San Secondo "Tra Vestiti che Ballano" . Where the proletarian (film words not mine) are very brutal, and primitive and beastly . The bourgeois could be human but spoiled by the profit and materialism. And the aristocrat is spiritual, knows how to self limit, and embodied the Tradition: someone could be too much but this due too vodka . This is the ideology behind the scenes . Historical reality it's not and it was not so black and white. The huge facts of an immense nation less one way. For example there were two years of a never seen up to then ferocious war, with already 6 mln. of casualties in the est front. Which were not al s.o.b. but common human king generally poor peasants. Which can die exactly like any souls, but after a life of misery and hardships .
