Revolution Of Artificial Intelligence - Artificial intelligence is developing and the digital economy is expanding. To enable this millions of people are doing underpaid work that insults human intelligence.
Revolution Of Artificial Intelligence (2019)
Director: Sandrine Rigaud
Stars: Thierry Baubet, Janine Berg, Lukas Biewald
Genre: Documentary
Country: France
Language: English
Also Known As: Cash Investigation: Ghost Workers
Release Date: September 2019 France (TV premiere)
Synopsis:
We’re at the beginning of an artificial intelligence revolution that promises to change everything. Already, virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa have become a part of our daily life. But in order to run their applications, digital giants like Amazon, Google and Facebook, employ an army of invisible labour. These are disposable workers, paid as little as 10 cents an hour to feed information into compter systems. They receive neither benefits nor contract and normal labour law don’t apply to them.
Whilst millions of men and women are training artificial intelligence for next to nothing, others are being hired and hide out of sight to clean up social networks. We went undercover as one of these web cleaners, working as a content moderator for Facebook. To meet the workers hiding behind your screen, we’re taking you to the factory of the future, one of the digital economy’s best kept secrets.

Human body energy food cost alone cost 50 cents/hr. Electricity for computer, cooling computer, room light etc.. ~5 cents/hr (~US electricity cost). Furniture/room capital cost 8cents/hr for $1000 capital cost(24/7 equivalent) so if you work 20% (full time) and spend $1000 on furniture = 32 cents/hr. Housing rent ~15000/yr (20% working time = 3000/yr, ~2000hr work = $1.5/hr for office/house cost. ---> Total minimum $2.37/hr just base cost for worker. Anything less, you are paying company for privilege to extract your own equity (or you are Uberized )

The question for me is whether artificial intelligence technology can be paralyzed by viruses? If the answer is yes, it can be paralyzed by viruses, just like viruses that attack computers, etc., then it would be good if artificial intelligence technology were given the trust to create its own anti-virus using its intelligence.

Video has nothing to do with AI. and nothing to do with revolution. underpaid job is not ai or internet problem - it always was there, so no need blaming someone or something. human life is not that valuable as some want to think. As for the video I'm much more interested as to why those "bad" videos aren't send to police then comfort of moderators.

Agree completely. If they don't like the remuneration, they should switch off the computer and go do something else. It's not a 'job', and they're not 'workers' in the sense this documentary implied. They are people clicking around on the internet and earning a few pennies for doing so. I earned nothing for contributing to this thread. Where do I go to complain about low 'wages'?

While the pay is pathetic, no one is forcing these people to work in that job. They can always quit and move to a better paying job. For the single mom with 3 kids, it is her fault to have 3 kids with no dad in the picture. If she was single with no kids, she could have explored her options better and got into a better financial situation. Blaming just Facebook or Accenture is not right. They are only paying low wages because there are too many people for them to choose from. Demand and supply dictate the wages.

If you agree to work for 30 cents an hour then that's just your own fault really. First worlder's can easily find something else that makes them a lot more money if they really put effort into it (most don't). While I don't agree that "third-worlders" should be subjected to traumatizing content cause they're desperate, I also can't sympathise with Westerners caught up in these situations when they enjoy so many privileges. That woman babying her grown ass daughter while complaining about living in a lavish house and free $750 a month is insane. Hell, even the black man could get a proper paying job so what's stopping her beyond wanting to be a helicopter parent? I think she's the mentally ill one with Munchausens by proxy or BPD and is exaggerating her daughter's mental illness (if she even has any) so she can keep her baby close and dependent on mommy. Fat dude just looks like he gave up on life. The figure 8 founder is an uncharismatic sociopath laughing at nothing like a psycho.

I grew up in an agricultural community, so these pay structures are not that unfamiliar to me. It even reminded me of the ridiculous pay newspaper companies pay to deliver papers. Unfortunately, it all still follows the economic principle that value follows value; or in other words, the more valuable the task you perform the more value you should expect in return. These are very menial task, and therefore by sheer economic principles do not justify high wages, even if they are stepping over the border of so-called subjective fairness.

In essence, the documentary was passable, but one aspect I find hard to believe is the portrayal of content moderators being deeply disturbed by the graphic footage they have to view. In today's digital age, many children have easy access to extremely gruesome videos on the internet, and well-known websites that I won't mention explicitly. Even high-school and elementary teachers have witnessed the circulation of horrific content in classrooms. So, what exactly are we discussing here?
