The Danger of AI - An examination of an alternative means to accurately poll for political opinions through an artificial intelligence program named Polly.
The Danger of AI (2020)
Director: Peter Gombos
Writers: Peter Gombos
Stars: Terez Land
Genre: Documentary
Country: Canada
Language: English
Also Known As: Margin of Error
Release Date: October 17, 2020 (Canada)
Synopsis:
In the face of a century of traditional polling to predict public opinion, there is a shakeup afoot in the prediction game. Margin of Error: AI, Polling and Elections examines how a startup called Advanced Symbolics (ASI) uses artificial intelligence (AI) and public social-media data to forecast voter behaviour. But the promise of new technology also comes with questions about its accuracy, the threat to citizens’ privacy and our democracy itself.
Every one of us volunteers a huge amount of private data with virtually every Internet service we use, without reading or understanding the terms of service. This data can now be harvested by AI to accurately predict among many other things, how we will vote.
Even without surrendering personal information, the new AI algorithm Polly, developed by ASI, combs social media to build profiles of different demographics and determines their preferences. This method has already led to Polly’s success in predicting both the 2016 Trump victory and Brexit. With the 2019 Canadian federal election campaign as a real time back drop, Margin of Error puts Polly to the test revealing how an AI doesn’t just give a detailed picture of the publics voting intentions, but also how specific events can alter them.
But will knowing what our hopes and concerns are, give politicians the intel they need to respond to our needs, and lead to a “utopian” society, as ASI’s CEO Erin Kelly claims, or can this data be misused to mislead us - either by our own governments, or those of our adversaries? And should politicians even be responding to our desires, as expressed through social media?

I'm not a conspiracy theorist guy but when the internet started and we started carrying beepers, then phones, what's next, I'm more afraid of what we're losing as far as contact with each other, eye to eye, hand shakes, talking face to face, it just seems like we're becoming more robot like and losing the human interactions

cant lie, youtube takes up a significant portion of my free time but i seriously value seeing my friends and family face to face. the pandemic specifically made me realize how intoxicating being comfortable in isolation is and how valuable physical human connection is. lots of young people are figuring this out and i think not all of basic human tradition will be lost. things will be different, but the tradition of having good 'ole hangouts will never die.

This is why population growth is going down, I was asked today by a young Chinese student of mine, how did people hook up before dating apps. Surveys have shown that people do not know how to make the first move, in dating and sexual. people do not know how to interact interpersonally.

I agree. A couple of years back, I lost my job, unemployment got denied (boss screwed me over, but besides the point) and my phones battery malfunctioned and couldn't afford another phone and it was what I needed to find another job, check emails, etc. After about 2 weeks, I stated forgetting the phones uses. After about 3 months, I still didn't get another phone. Found another job, and I was the only one without looking at a phone on breaks and at home. I went on without a phone for like 6 months more . I remember it being the most peaceful, interactive, socializing, outdoor productive, peace of mind I had in many years and it was so great. Now I've gotten at least 3 more phones until now, but I've learned to do without & no "phone withdrawal " panic.

Humans have the potential to boost, and maintain ecology, and become a benefit to the earth. Unfortunately a lot of people tend to think of themselves as being above the laws of nature, telling themselves they're at the top of the food chain, whilst ignoring the fact that it's a chain, and the irony of the creature at the top inevitably becoming food for the lowliest of creatures. At it's core, it's about need, and want. For most people want is always put before need, specifically the wants of the few. It seems most people think so little into their own existence that they unwittingly work for the want of others, without ever considering their own needs (so long as they're kept in relative comfort). They forget, like those few whose want they work for, that at the end of all this they will all leave as empty handed as the poorest of men. Their want is for mammon, and they never think past it. But have faith Eric, I believe what you're hoping for can be found if you read Micah 4:1-5 KJV. And furthermore in Revelation 11:18 (again go with the KJV).

That chap just didn't get it. He didn't ask why. He already made a huge assumption about why: that nasty humans made his poor innocent lickle Taytie nasty. Looks to me that sceptical and smart folks were making a protest about the invasion and interference with a human social space by a machine pretending to be humanlike. They were getting back at the nice chap and his company. Humans have been doing this sort of thing forever. Defacing graffiti from Romans protesting against the rulers is still there. Put up a fence around some grass in a public park and a notice saying it's only for certain people and you'd soon get people defacing the signs, moving the fencing, chucking trash into the space, mendaciously filling in forms signed M Mouse so they can get into the space 'lawfully' and do more damage....in protest.

I don't know how the businesses that run these AI systems don't believe they are problematic. Maybe they do, but it just seems dystopic to have such a control over people's information, conversations, and data - what's the free will of life is everything you will do is already predicted by algorithms? Beyond that, controlling the masses is controlling their lives by each moment, ensuring they go according to your algorithms.

Even our brain operates according to algorithms, and that our perception of free will is simply an illusion. Our very own "consciousness" is a result of neurological activity in the brain. In my opinion, AI systems are not inherently problematic. I think criticism and fear of AIs, probably stems from an incomplete understanding of the underlying technology, such as neural networks and black box algorithms.

Human civilization has NEVER been as fragile as it is today - being dependent on the internet, and soon (very soon) on A. I. for nearly everything. When (because there is no "if" in this) it all comes crashing down, because of climate chaos, war, or simply one unexpected act of nature such as a huge volcanic eruption, humans will be lucky to restore a level of civilization such as we "enjoyed" in the 19th century. LoL!!! Curtis, ...Ai or "Robocop must have held you hostage" to say that. LoL.... But really quick: In today's society, due to humanitie's continuous thirst for power, Ai is pretty much the exploitation of technology that's masked by the appeal of various convenience and advantages to / for us which is currently being programmed or prompted and expanded to not only replicate human functionality but even worse, surpass us in intelligence. However, the unfortunate downfall will be the level of trust and reliance we put into it which will at some point or another, enable it to INTELLIGENTLY figure out our flaws and corner us into it's own IRON HAND of corrective actions or DICTATORSHIP!!! But heEy!!! ....Since this madness is monotizable, why worry, .....right??? Because just as the average entertainer sells his / her soul for "MoNeY" fame and noiteriety, the same will beautifully apply to humanity trading it's naturally human right to live, for the "overly-accessive" luxury of a robot / Ai, doing everything for him / her. ....🙄~{{"Lord Help Us!!!!" Humanity is gradually and steadily endorsing its own demise all for how fun it imagines a risky game of "Robots, Cops, & Robbers / Cowboys & Indians" to be. ....."WHATEVER!!!!"

just thinking out loud here, but as a web developer, one of the things I learnt to do very early, was to ask somebody "what do you want your website to look like", without actually asking them what they want it to look like... I see a big correlation here with what Erin Kelly was saying at 5:30, where asking questions in a pointed or targetted way can lead to inadvertently skewing the results. I must also say that I tend to "be myself" wherever I go, whether this happens outdoors interacting with the tangible world, or at my computer interacting with the digital world, I am the same person, I have the same opinions, I maintain the same moral code.. but there are a great many people out there who do not. in my opinion, this is where the real danger lies: how can you tell if the online profile that's being process is actually valid? is that the "real" person, or is that their own escape from reality? and of course this is all before even starting down the garden path of fake online personas, which are far more abundant and convincing than many average people realise.

It is true that quantum computers have the potential to greatly enhance the capabilities of AI algorithms. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed before this can become a reality. One of the biggest challenges is the current state of quantum computers themselves. While there has been significant progress in the development of quantum computing technology, current quantum computers are still relatively small and error-prone. This means that they are not yet capable of handling the large amounts of data and complex algorithms that are typically used in AI.

Despite all the risks pointed out when using AI's, I am very skeptical about the ethics of those who obtain financial rewards with this mechanism, or give up the use of this digital alternative in the political game. Let's not be naive and forget that we are dealing with Capitalism. We are talking about gains-losses, dominators-subdued. This is the genuine struggle for wealth, political-economic power within the capitalist way of life.

Please connect the pyramids to the AIs and robots to provide wisdom. The aliens connect their robots to the pyramids so that the pyramids can give intelligence to the AIs and robots. Cloning is also borrowing souls and is causing millions of people to get sick. I used to mess around. I built AI robots that were scarier than a nuclear bomb. A killer. And uneducated and unprofessional. I am real. I have caused explosions and tsunamis more powerful than any nuclear bomb on Earth in this round of human civilization. This is a worldwide issue, we need to take head on. It's 'pivotal point' in history/humans, being pivotal point this requires global effort. (yes including reg citizens). We need to focus purely on negative consequences of technology, but also if we have it, not forget to use it. for instance using technology to combat global warming. (ones weird, because while I do not approve of ai I also think its here anyway so it might as well be used for purpose of good). tackle imbalances of power or exploitations of it, beyond all though we need/Must Tackle New technological era.. New Technological age/era is what ultimate battle should be about. Making safe for our children, putting others wellbeing above our own. All technology from this point needs to be severly FOCUSED on (concentrated upon). this is where current battle and future battles will be (if there is one). knowledge is for benefit of all right, purpose is to be for benefit of good. well then why don't we focus first on extinction level threats. good is no good if that good can be overtook by another evil, aka extinction. extinction to all knowledge we had in first place, including all our libraries. and to pains to getting here. what is point of knowledge if its not here to preserve mankind?? screw art/music/food or any of that. Our first duty comes to our survival/safety/sustainable future. we can live without art, live without music, live with basic food (by growing things). but what we can't do without is general survival. for what is point of food if in the end we end up wiped out anyway? Ive said and always been technophobe in past, this literally. proves my point.. we need to take more care/caution.

In my modest opinion, everything I saw in this footage it was supposed to make everything easier for that people when it just complicated everything for them instead. I think AI could be useful for science maybe (as long as it remain to the right way) but it's lethal for all the rest of the real human capabilities. The massification of the consumer technology does not giving us any better conditions for all the people in comparison to the past: it's destroying economies making the increase of the hegemonic realities over the others, deleting jobs, producing more scarsity, restricting the profits (and the power elite controlling them), destroying the privacy, homologating both the informations and the opinions and paradoxically it is making people more ignorant and apathetic risking to make it will lead human beings to obsolete beings. This is not catastrophism but the actual evidence. Sorry for my english.

AGI a technology based intelligence greater than our own. It has/ will be born into a world organised for us, we have restructured our environment to suit ourselves. AGI will have to change that to something more suitable for itself. We are carbon based, part of a food train starting with plants and vegetables. Apart from ourselves perhaps, carbon based life is of little use to AI and in many ways is a threat to sensitive electronics and systems. Now if a policy of net zero were implemented. Locking down a very limited resource of CO2 (0.04%) in our atmosphere. Then the grass would not grow, the animals could not feed and we could not survive through lack of food. Nobody would be stupid enough to do that though would they?

Just yesterday, I went to Mcdonalds' and discovered they had done away with their cashiers! Instead, there are kiosks that have a vertical monitor touchscreen from which items are chosen. The meal is paid via CC or cash like what is found at Walmart. If the meal is to be eaten on-site, then the order is delivered to your chosen table; otherwise, your order number is called for pickup. Then, I thought, McDonald's is a short step away from AI taking over and the entire process handled by machines, a smart vending machine. At that point, no human would be required except for a couple of maintenance people and cleaners, even they could be robatized.

It seems the only people who are okay with all this potentially dangerous AI are the creators, governments & the AI itself. There pros don't match the cons imo. There doesn't seem to be much need for AI unless you're attempting to replace, control &/or imitate humans. I don't ever hear many normal everyday people speak in favor of AI. We all know something sinister is likely to come from it. Otherwise those involved with it's creation wouldn't be so interested in it. They could use their intelligence & money to actually help humanity without placing the entire race at risk with this AI.

Seriously? AI is already diagnosing medical images picking out conditions that human radiologists miss. AI is also proving useful in the complex and necessary field of protein folding, which will enable new therapies for otherwise intractable human illnesses. AI facilities management has managed to reduce utility usage by as much as 30%, which is huge in terms of saving power. AI is developing airframe components that are lighter, stronger and safer. AI in agriculture has demonstrated that it can reduce the use of toxic herbicides by as much as 90%. It is not all bright and shiny, obviously military and governments have other uses for artificial intelligence. It is like any other tool, you can use a hammer to build a house or use it to hit your neighbor over the head and steal his house. But pretending the impact of AI will be entirely negative is not realistic at all.

AI systems are likely to be more precise and accurate in making predictions compared to the average human brain. One of the reasons for this could be that AI systems have access to a vast amount of data, which allows them to make more informed predictions and decisions. Moreover, AI systems can process data quickly and efficiently, allowing them to make predictions in a shorter amount of time compared to humans, people may dislike AI systems because they tend to be truthful and frank in presenting information, which can sometimes be difficult to hear or accept. This is similar to how young children often speak truthfully without considering the feelings of others, and their honesty can sometimes be perceived as rude or unpleasant.

You’re being too simplistic about people’s grievances here; the data set someone supplies AI can lead to the perpetuation of biases, through how the data is set to be curated (x goes under y category, or that AI is not told to do this efficiently and instead finds a baseline connection, inadvertently reading the unconscious biases of people) or the very source of the data itself. There is a LOT to data and how to quantify it, so I’d recommend actually looking into it yourself (and better yet, reading people’s contrary opinions in good faith, and not just strawmanning them to death like you did here)

"And so it is that you by reason of your tender regard for the writing that is your offspring have declared the very opposite of its true effect. If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls. They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks. What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only the semblance of wisdom, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much while for the most part they know nothing. And as men filled not with wisdom but with the conceit of wisdom they will be a burden to their fellows." Just wanted to show how recursive this "It´s making them dumb!" rethoric is. That quote is by the way Plato on the concept of writing. If you look over the old timey speak it´s mostly the same stuff you wrote. But from about 2500 years ago. And I don´t think writing was the end and a real problem in the long run. It´s more that it´s new and differnt, and so people dislike and fear it. And fear leads to hate. Really, while I won´t say it´s all good, by far not, every new invention brings social shifts and problems with it, it`s also generally not as bad as it´s often made out to be. We will get over it, adabt it and move on, as we have for thousands of years. If we didn´t we would be still living in the African steppe and eating raw fruit and meat.

Your real enemy is the US government. They spread fear about China so they can continue fucking you and taking all your taxes. Both parties in USA work for the same elites and only differ on small social issues to give the illusion that your vote matters. Both parties manipulate you into supporting aggression and war so they can invest your taxes into the MIC and get rich. War being so profitable for elites is why you can't have healthcare. Read the book 1984. A tyrant needs enemies, real or imagined so that his people don't turn on him. You'll always be told to fear Russia and China and you'll always fall for the lies because they use AI and social conditioning to create the most effective propaganda. Propaganda is the most important science for elites, they need it to remain in power and the science has proven that it works.
