I bought one of these about 3 months ago. I've played only on CHALLENGING mode and haven't won a game yet! I made a weighted wooden chess set and use that on this board. Lots of fun. Thanks for the review!

@@mikestubbs1708 Not easily because of castling. You can set up the board for 960 but to castle you’d have to enter into setup mode then exit and continue. I haven’t tried because the board is not set up to play 960, but I quite enjoy 960 and play it online, not on this board. I don’t sell the DGT Centaur, but I like the idea! Thanks for watching!

No I don’t think so, it’s not set up for that unfortunately.

You can, it just takes longer to set up. You can manually enter starting positions into the board to play, so if you see a position online that you want to test out, you can enter it in. For Chess960, there is no game mode for it, but you could just manually enter the setup you want to play and then play it. To do that you select the piece in the menu and then place it on the board where you want it to go, and then you choose whose turn it is to move.

@@CommutingCatholic Thanks, that is a way, but ;-) we live in modern times, more or less ;-) so I think a modern chess computer should reflect that, and implement this mode naturally. If the very cool chessboard release it, I will buy one or more!.

So how does the computer know that you move a certain peice legally to a square. Does it sense the square or the piece? Sorry for the confusing stupid question

when you start the game it assigns all the pieces with some kind of cpu/magnets underneath the board. if you make an illegal move or move incorrectly for the computer - the board will put a flowing light circle around the incorrectly placed piece until it’s picked up and put back into play.

Nice review! 😊 What I don’t like is that you can’t see the notation fields. Is that displayed on the small 2D screen? Can you set up a position on this board? I think it is also too costly for my liking, but I really like the lights that shows the moves. I have and old Grandmaster Excalibur, but I want something newer.

Thanks for watching, yes it is displayed on the little screen. I’m pretty sure you can set up a position, I’ll have to look at it, so far I haven’t used that feature. I also have an Excalibur and still use it! But yeah, these lights are cool.

I found the carry-on bag locally at a chess store. It's about the same price as Amazon, but I save on the shipping and the import charges reduced my carbon footprint by picking it up myself than having it trucked to me.

By the way, do the pieces get recognised when you setup a position as in .. if I place the pieces on the board randomly, does it recognise all the pieces without you having to key in the piece types?

Actually I'm not sure, good question, I'll have to look into it. Though I think you can set up positions.

No it just reacts to metal, so you could also use a coin instead of any piece. That means it doesn’t recognize a false positioning

I bought it but I didn't get the carry-on bag. Amazon bundled it with the centaur $489 plus sales tax would have been too much, so I just got the centaur for now. I don't regret buying it plays a great game. Comes with an adjustable wall adapter and charges by USB. I use the charging wire for my Bose headphones perfect.

For just the light feature alone, I feel it is a bit steep on price. But I suppose you're paying for the AI as well with these types of devices. Also can't deny it looks great! I am super interested in the self moving chess boards from SquareOff though.

Those self moving Square Off ones are a gimmick .. such an annoying grinding noise and slow. You can do better than that!

@@melodychest9020 Haha well I suppose playing online games, using a real chess board could be seen as a gimmick as well. I kind of like the self moving stuff, but you are right in how it would not work when it time trouble in an online game, let alone something like bullet chess.

I'm a bit late to the party, but received my Centaur yesterday and really like it a lot. The price is not only for the lights, but also the engine. What makes this board so unique (still, even at the start of 2024) is the fact that the engine will not complain when you do a different move than what it is asking you to do. It's great for experimenting with openings. I also have an older chess computer, that really plays as a computer. This Centaur feels much more human like. Till the end of the game, it gives you the feeling you can still win the game. I'm happy with my purchase.
