I bought a stock 1975 CB550 last summer. It had 18,000 original miles, zero rust, and the 4 into 4 exhaust. It ran and rode great until the fall. I barely made it home after a 40 mile ride--- the bike was bogging and stumbling and barely revved to 6 grand. I figured the carbs needed a rebuild. I discovered your video on Murray's Carbs and bought the newer kit with the manifolds that bolt directly to the head. My mechanic installed it this week and I've been riding the bike the last two days. IT IS SO GOOD!!!! The Honda rides like a brand new machine---- throttle response is immediate (even with the minor cable slop) and the bike just wants to rev. I still can't believe it. I really want to thank you for your video. The only problem encountered on the installation of the solid manifolds was that the nuts required clearancing. My guy didn't want to risk grinding on the manifolds so he shaved each nut til they fit. Murray's is a great alternative to rebuilding the stock four Keihins. Thanks again!

Just completed my swap and your videos were very helpful! I can see why you reacted the way you did... Wow!! It feels like a new bike. The throttle response is incredible and theres a noticeable difference in power (according to my butt dyno). Very happy overall! Air screws 1.5 turns out Main 160 Pilot 25 Have you made any adjustments since? I notice a little sputter when revving at low RPMs, but not when there is a load on it. It's smooth throughout the power band and I don't have any cracking or popping.

Thanks for the video, there's not a lot of info out there for this setup. A couple of questions for you if you have time: Did you have to sync them? What's the procedure for setting the idle if they're not connected? Also, I've heard the choke is tricky because it's two choke levers, is that your experience? Thank you!
@motorcyclerewind2 жыл бұрын
I did not sync them. If you watch the install video, I just put them on. As for as setting the Idle, I screwed them in counting the turns(like an air fuel screw) so I could get a baseline. Then adjust 1/4 turn each at a time. There are two choke levers not a big deal. Actually, now that I have have been running it, haven't had to use the choke. Check out the other videos I have in the CB550 playlist.
@travisshrey67202 жыл бұрын
The two chokes are easy enough to use, I usually set each to 1/2 way and it just fires up. Turn them off after a minute of fast idle at 2500 rpm. If you want to sync them correctly you should use a carb sync tool on the outer two runners and move the idle screws until you get the idle speed you want and they both read the same vacuum. Then give it a little gas so it comes off the idle stop and check vacuum. If they are different you adjust the housing screw on the top of the carb under the boot. A word of warning if you are troubleshooting, the inner cylinders run a lot richer than the outer at idle, so the header pipes will be 100 degrees hotter on the outer ones. That is normal.
@lexblok2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. I made a video myself ones of me accelerating on my CB550K3, with the stock carbs but I don't really see much difference. It is also as fast and going through all gears untill 9500 rpm and back to (i think) a nicer idling (more steady, not the taktaktak - sound) I 'm curiuos if this set is really better than the stock keihins.

Post the link I would love to see it.
@preez772 жыл бұрын
it's not better. Equal at best. Simpler for sure compared to 77-78 PD carbs. His idle is rough because the 2 carbs are not synced. One set of cylinders tries to run faster than the other set.

I bought vm30 carbs from speed moto co. Had to rejet them for my rebel 450. Had to bump the main jet up to 175 from a 165. I have a 1/4 throttle surge but not sure if that’s from a intake leak at the boots. The boots came with the kit but they are leaking. Not sure if I can even tighten the clamps any tighter. Bike runs good besides being alittle too lean even though I have everything set to be rich. Going to see today if the problem with the surge is the boots or not. It’s easy to rejet but just annoying after the 4th or 5th try at it. Is your bike running lean with these carbs? Do you have color on the spark plugs? The bike idles and revs good at 1/2 turn out of the air screw which is weird. I went to a 27.5 pilot from the 25 they had in. Seems to be okay. I really think I have a vacuum leak though which is throwing off the jetting.

I would reach out to the guys at Speedmoto. They are wizards and super helpful. Will get you sorted.

@@motorcyclerewind I have been talking to them. I tightened down the boots. Seems to be okay. The bike runs good now. The surging seemed to get better when I messed with the air screw. Only thing I’m afraid of is the bike might be running lean according to the spark plug color. I research different spark plug charts and info and some say different info. It’s starting to get annoying. I really don’t want to blow up my bike if it is running lean.

@darkshadowsx59492 жыл бұрын
yeah the PD46A carb jets clog up and you have to resync them every 3 feet. taking them off and reinstalling them is a nightmare of its own. you got 4 orings flying everywhere and 3 control cables to fight off like a kraken. you also have 8 nuts to loose in the grass and the carb bodies are so soft you have to let grandma handle the screws or you're sure to strip them. i had to do thread repair on 8/12 of the screws. i paid some "seasoned motorcycle mechanic" to fix my carbs and that was the worst mistake i made. he stripped out 6 of the screws. 2-3 were striped by the ebay seller before hand so he retaped them to a larger thread size like a complete moron. he made a poor attempt at soldering a cracked overflow tube and he had the audacity to charge me $80 to mess my carbs up more. if i wanted them messed up more i could have just hit them with a 3lbs hammer and called it a day.
