Since I am considering both amps, and these pedals, this is a very, very valuable review for me. Thank you very much.

One thing I've discovered about the G20 is that it blends overdrives and distortions (in series, haven't tried parallel) very well. If you dial in a moderate gain on the OD channel (doesn't matter the aggression, the aggression just changes the character) and put an OD or a dist in front (not a boost, although it takes a boost like a champ) with very light-moderate distortion the G20 goes into tonal characters it certainly will not do on its own. The only point the G20 fell apart when blending distortions was when I pushed moderate gain and very high level boost into the input using my TC spark with the level dimed. AFAIK most other distortion pedals, certainly the ones I own, aren't capable of pushing the G20 to the point it falls apart as the spark has much higher output capability than any pedal I'm aware of. Obviously distortion blending is not something you can do with a D20, so I thought I would share a difference I've noticed.

how do you think the g20 would go with a g3 pedal used in front? or is it more worth while using a different od pedal?

Amazing video, many thanks Shawn! I have a question that I would appreciate you could help me with : Between the G20 and D20, which one has the loudest clean channel with plenty of headroom (looking for something as clean as a Fender Twin Reverb).
@Escapism71333 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering the same thing. I'm guessing neither will have as much clean headroom as a Fender Twin due to the wattage difference. Contrary to what Shawn says at the end of this video, from what I've heard the G20 has the cleaner clean channel of the 2 amps. Which I find odd because the D20 was the amp designed to be the pedal platform amp. Go figure.
@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed2 жыл бұрын
Definitely the D20. But the closest to my red knobs Twin cleans in the Revv amps is the Dynamis 7-40 (the D in D20 comes from their previous Dynamis amp). It's 40 watts instead of 20 so it has a lot more clean headroom. Not available right now though but I think they'll come up with an updated version of the Dynamis in 2023.

I never heard distortion from a pedal that beat a dirty channel of a tube amp. Today I tried my G3 Revv in my Nextone Artist return to a mesa cab. It's cool but the Suhr Shiba in the dirty channel of the Nextone feels way natural. Finally I might send my CAA OD100 for repair at Suhr as it worth the trouble IMO. YMMV

Why add any pedals at all if you get a really nice distorted tone that you like out of the amp? I have a JVM205h on top of 4x12, I love it but I wanna get some more ooomph out of it. Overdrive pedal, premap pedal, EQ? suggestions?
@alexander_winston Жыл бұрын
Consider using an attenuator…. That amp really wants to get its tubes cooking, but a dimed 50w will peel the paint off the walls. Also consider putting an eq pedal in the fx loop, or hitting the front of the amp with a treble booster (I’ve had great experience with the Catalinbread Naga Viper).

I have watched this video twice now - once just now, after last night's live stream, where I had mistakenly said that you (Shawn) had made me think the G20 didn't have a clean. I think I just interpreted it that way the first time I watched because I was thinking of the G20 as a higher gain monster, and the D20 as a pedal platform, but clearly they can both do clean. I guess the only thing I would have liked to hear between the two was to have heard you back off the bass on the G20, to see if it would come closer to that vintage sound from the D20. They both sound great - and I am more of a blues/rock type player - I don't really shred - and I do use some OD pedals into the front of the amp, but - I think I'd go with the G20, because I got goosebumps when you had the pedals on the G20, a couple of times, and I didn't get goosebumps with the D20. That's a good enough reason to pick one over the other, right? :P If it inspires a person to play, especially if you get goosebumps playing an amp, you're going to enjoy it more. Thanks again for doing these!

I definitely want the d20. I would like to know how it would sound with the g2 pedal and stacked with like a sd1 or a Klon. I do a lot of gain stacking but sometimes it doesn’t always work with certain circuits.
@ShawnTubbs3 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the SD-1 with the G2, but I did try the G2 with a Rockett Pedals Archer that is very close to the Klon circuit and I wasn't really into it. It didn't sound bad but the top-end harmonics were a bit fuzzy, at least for me. I like a Klon style circuit and I know plenty of players that use them with other OD/Distortion pedals but they tend to run them with very little gain and more like a "push box". I prefer to use a Klon style circuit straight into a slightly driven amp. Thanks for watching and for chiming in!

@@liberty4all885 I know it's been a while but I do use the G2 and push it with a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe (klone with more EQ capabilities) and it sounds amazing. I plug into the D20's big brother which is the Dynamis 7-40 so similar base clean tone as the D20. Sounds amazing!

For me the perfect "best of both worlds" amp is my Dynamis 7-40 which has the same pedal platform qualities with its Blue/clean channel as the D20 and punchier cleans but with the perfect Red/gain channel. The red channel on the Dynamis 7-40 is just killer. It's like a chunkier Marshall tone but it has its own thing and I just love it.

Nothing wrong with a modeler. They're getting better and better, but there's something about playing through valves that just feels so good. Revv has nailed the hybrid approach for sure between analog tubes and tech!

G20 "clean" seems to be clipping or "pushed" more than the D20. Neither of them seem to really clean up to a REAL clean. Disappointing. Clean isn't hard. It means no freaking clipping. You can always add more dirt.

Sorry that most of us like a little harmonic content and not a completely sterile tone which is uncommon among most amp designs. How’s your amp design coming along?
