r1 owner here-- the thing I would have added re: urban use, beyond just the coolant temp - the bike in general **GETS** **HOT** hot hot hot hot HOT. If you're not going 70+ it just doesn't have the airflow to keep itself appropriately cool for urban riding. This means the aux fans kick in early / often / (always). You will abhor every stop sign/red light on the planet, as motion is your only savior from drowning in the lava-cycle's fiery wrath. The "fire logo" you put on this thing is 100% appropriate. If you live in phoenix like me, the dead of summer actually becomes an off-season. Good thing all winter is fair game! That said, not in a million years would I trade it for a cbr/gsxr/aprillia/bmw. Yeah, the daily rider aspect is kinda goofy for me. First of all, you will want two bikes. If I'm considering an R1 and I commute every day, I would just get an R7 and a decent used commuter bike. Or a slightly used R1 and a cheap commuter. If you want an R1 and you get something else, you will still always want that R1. Okay, maybe an MT10 could scratch that crossplane itch and still be a comfy commuter, but it's still not an R1.

I own this exact bike and frankly couldn't agree more with the entire review. It's a bad (perhaps laughably so) streetbike and a great trackbike, with a unique character that somehow manages to feel pretty intoxicating in both settings. Truly more of a lust object than a rational choice. Totally fair criticisms about the small display, humdrum suspension, and so-so brakes aside... I have to point out that you do get a peppering of exotica compared to much of its similarly-priced superbike competition: cast magnesium wheels and subframe, titanium exhaust headers (and much of the muffler, if I'm not mistaken), titanium intake valves and titanium connecting rods.

If I understand correctly, the R1 engine is so smooth because they can't remove the balancer, unlike all the other regular inline-4s that have deleted the balancer because they have end-to-end balance naturally to chase peak whp (but not totally balanced, so they still vibe without a balancer).
@Josh-cw8by2 ай бұрын
It feels smooth because at least one piston is always in motion. This translates into a smoother running engine and torque application. In a flatplane i4 there are points in the cycle where all pistons stop moving. You can put together the rest. Balancing shafts help as well.

This is a balanced and true review. I spent time with a 2020. The only thing it excels in is the sound and engine attitude. It tortures and fatigues the rider like old Ducati's used to. It's too focussed when it doesn't really need to be. It's not the best on the road, not the best on track. The focus doesn't make it greater than the competition. Too compromised everywhere, not great anywhere. Current gen GSXR-1000R and ZX-10R (I own both), not to mention the Euro options are far better bikes, IMHO.

I remember the first time I ever sat on an R1, I couldn’t believe how aggressive it was. It’s a terrible road bike but my word the performance and sound are incredible.

What about the R7 vs R1? I know smaller engine but still crossplane engine. I for one love the sound of both. But I want a flickable bike that’s fun in twistys. My commute is twisty rds. Money not a problem. What’s ur recommendation?

Hey Zack. Amazing video man. Love the way you explain the features of the bike. I had a simple question. How many bikes have you ridden yet? I'd imagine more than a 1000

It comes back to same saying...it's more fun to drive a slow thing fast then a fast thing slow.

Hey Zack, great video. My girl and I have been discussing getting the new MT-09 together. We like the naked bikes a lot and think we would enjoy it more than a bike like the R1. Any plans to review that bike? What naked bike would you recommend most with your vast experience? Thank you!

I recently became a lover of bikes and was and still is of cars, but cars are pricy for performance, and the R1 caught my eye, hands down imo one of the best looking mid 2010s bikes and cheap compared to the rest which i all like post 2020, and most of all that gorgeous engine, that sets you apart from the rest, as a daily might suck, but i'll use a car for that, as a weekende warrior on the otherhand, i'd say perfect, in 3 or so years i might just get my hands on one of them(also mainly since in South Africa you can't get an MT10 and if i go naked sport 1000cc i'd want an S1kR)
