Harley Sportster EP5 - Controls, Lighting, & Accessories Modification
www.revzilla.co...
Read more about the Sportster mods at Common Tread
www.revzilla.c...
It started with a full review of the 2016 Harley Sportster Iron 883. Then came episodes 1 - 4 when we tackled some of the most common Sportster modifications commonly seen, and our opinions on what we liked best. Now, to round out the Sportster Mods series, Lemmy spends Episode 5 talking about, well, everything else! In being let loose to indulge his druthers Lemmy went all-in with the best controls, best lighting, and best accessories to make the Harley Iron 883 stand out even more amongst the crowd. With the Harley Sportster EP5 - Controls, Lighting, & Accessories video, the goal was simple; finish this Iron 883 off with the final touches that intricately define a one-of-a-kind modified Sportster.

Hey RevZilla. Why not consider a (bolt together) series. For the people that like to buy their own frame and like to build their bike. Ordering all different parts so it’s unique, I’ve found a lot of my friends want to do that but when we all look on KZbin theirs not a lot of content their that’s easy to understand. I feel you guys could do something like that and do it right.

Flipping the logo upside down was something a lot of guys used to do during the amf days. Flipping the logo was a way of saying you don't support what Harley is doing/and or has become. It also stood for FTF. Or f the factory.

There is something that tickles me about buying a new HD only to rotate the HD logo to indicate your disapproval. I would think a better strategy would be to buy another motorcycle, but honestly - it seems like that's what folks are doing. Which is good... and bad - HD is in such a tight spot what with having a shrinking core customer base, but consistently pissing off the core base when they try to bring new people into it. So potential customers don't want a heavy, technologically inferior, expensive machine (mostly, acknowledged there are a handful of cheaper HD models) and the core guys don't want anything that isn't what HD has been doing for 50 years. Talk about damned if you do damned if you don't.

This was a fun series to watch and definitely gave me ideas of my own. I just bought my first bike a month ago, Sportster XL1200 actually, and I've been having fun swapping out pegs and grips and ready to sink my teeth into some other changes too. I know I'm a few years late, but thanks for the series my dudes.

Fantastic series of videos, Lemmy. This is the new gold standard for Sportster mod videos and will get hundreds of thousands of views over the next years - until none of the products you recommend is in production anymore... You built pretty much the perfect Sportster - until this last episode. The Scrambler look really doesn't work on this bike. Come on, it's a city prowler, people will ride this to the ice cream parlor and to the movies, no-one takes a Sportster off-road. Performance-focused road tires and some other performance mods to the engine would have made much more sense.

Sad to see this series end, don't even look twice at Harleys but that bike is bitchin!! Another series like this definitely has my vote, whether it's another cruiser (Suzuki M109R personal preference), or a standard/sportbike (please not an R6, they're everywhere), I'd love to see another mild build series from my favorite Harley hugger.

One thing to be noted about switching handlebars. If you slide the right side controls off, it will damage the pin that activates the rear brake light. There is a spacer that needs to be inserted to protect it when removing. If the pin breaks your rear lights will be on high all the time and melt the bezels.

I hope this series makes a comeback, it's definitely one of my favorite things so far on Revzilla. I'd like to see this continued, but sweep over to some mods that you ship out the bike/engine for. A s&s 1200 conversion and a custom tank and mudguard paint job are usually the next points an iron owner looks to for personalization. Showing how to prep for those properly would be a good piece of info for bike owners.
@RevZilla

Our goal is to keep these accessible and generally DIY. While it might be cool to do a 1200 conversion or custom paint, it might make more sense to show some love for other popular bike models first. -DrewZilla

Great series, really enjoyed it. Spurg the reason you experienced the de-cell popping is because the bike was not tuned. I know you guys installed a V+H fuel pak but thats not considered tuning. You would get the results if you just prayed for performance, its basically a gimmick. Thanks for everything keep up the good work.

From the beginning this series was meant for stuff a noob could do with a cheap set of hand tools and no previous experience. FWIW, I think the biggest gap in the build is getting some heavier real hetro non-progressive springs for the front. Revzilla doesn't carry them though. Neither does Sonic, but somebody does.

I would love to see a series on modding the FZ-09 or XSR900 (or both since a lot of parts fit both). The 09 is hugely popular so that'd be a good pick I think. My other vote would be for something fun but in need of work from the factory - like the Suzuki DRZ400SM. It has potential but it's slow and looks like it's from the 80's.

I just came off a 1999 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Injection to a 2008 XL1200C 105th anniversary sporty. (Health reasons) The “sportster” isn’t a sporty bike in the newer sense of the word. ( you have to remember, this bike has been in production longer than most buyers of the bike) BUT, if you’re looking at loosing 300lbs of weight, gaining a playful nature, and still having a harley, well then it’s a great bike! I like my sporty a lot. Yes its the entry level harley. Always has been. Yes it needs improvements. BUT, you bought it because IT IS A HARLEY. You wanted the looks, the thumbs up while pumping gas in it. The sound and the feel of a Harley. Yes, it DEFINITELY needs better shocks and a better seat. But most of us would do that on other bikes. If you hate it sooo much, don’t buy it. If you love it, then spend a little $$ and make it your’s! Enjoy the ride....

And a question I would ask of to add in your shop is to include information about E-certifications or ABE certification on parts. found a nice exhaust on the site but I have no idea if I am allowed to ride with it. Hey Lemmy, my HD dealership said that because I didn't use a Harley Davidson brand headlight, that I am running the risk of burning my ECU, messing up the fuel injection system, and can possibly mess with the Can Bus system. They said that the electrical is so sensitive on the newer bikes that I should just take it off. What do you think? I installed an aftermarket LED Headlight and some Auxbeam floods.

The Denali light we installed is designed to work well with the bike. If your LED headlight is of similarly high quality, you'll likely be fine. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/denali-led-headlight-module

Right now we aren't planning one for the Scout, but as more aftermarket parts become available, we might decide to mod one. -DrewZilla

WOuld love to see a continuation of this series whether with this bike or a new one. Really love the concept. Question, and likely noob one at that, is there a way to have both mirrors under the bar like that?

Alright, wasnt sure if there would be an issue with the control parts.

I feel the first 4 parts were great. But this one, just felt half assed. I'd like to see this project continue. 1250 kit, sissy bars etc. there's so much more to do with that bike.

I kinda hate harleys, but this one catches my eye a little. Not a fan of the upside-down mirror and the LED headlight, but other than that, i think it looks amazing.

I think the tank bib looks nice but would've maybe gone with a seat with matching style. And am surprised y'all didn't change the front indicators. But that's just my taste
