New for 2010 the Shoei X-12 Helmet is Shoei pinnacle race helmet. Redesigned for this year featuring an improved eyeport, faceshield, Snell M2010 Certification and Emergency Cheekpad releases among other features - they really spared no expense on this one.

I've always considered Shoei to have a bit of a larger profile, especially in the smaller shell sizes. I think Shark is the better bet here. -CK

Awesome review. I had a X-11 for 2 years and after coming off changed up to the X-12. Now I was expecting a better helmet but was pleasantly surprised when I found it was even better than I had hoped. The fit, the feel, the lack of wind buffeting (even when turning the head at high speed) have just got better and better. Even getting off the bike after over a 500km ride there is no neck or head discomfort. the only down side is the noise but as I always wear ear plugs it's not a problem.

This is the best helmet I have ever worn. It fits great and has the most solid feel without tugging my head around at high speeds. It opens up great for summer riding to keep you cool and can be tightened down for colder temps. I would highly recommend it.

@Pmason718 Hey P, the Corsair V is still the pinnacle in our opinion. The Star and the X12 are neck and neck. The X-12 will have a more narrow race fit, while the Star is a more intermediate round oval.

They both are top rated lids. The Shoei X12 has a smaller profile and therefore less wind resistance on the track, but the Corsair V has superior venting and might have a slight advantage for street use. ~Ali

i have only been riding for 6 months now and i chose to buy this helmet and i DO NOT regret it, and i know it was expensive but it was so worth it. the air flow that this helmet moves is unreal or in the cold it keeps a lot of heat in the helmet. and the protection that this helmet has kinda brought me around on buying this, the quick pull tabs should be on every helmet on the market....just my opinion. i have even put on other helmets like icon and nothing compares with this

Hi Anthony, Great review, this video actually helped me decide to buy this helmet. I bought the Shoei X-12 kiyonari 2. The only thing that i have with this helmet is when i lock it in it fogs up tremendously. I switched to the CW-Spectra mirrored visor. So basically i need leave the visor not sealed and when i do that it fogs. Regardless it is a good helmet, unfortunately I went down a couple months ago and this helmet saved my life. Thanks for this great review.

+papergh0st As a race helmet, the X-12 is quite loud, but the RF-1200 is actually very quiet, so I'd definitely recommend the RF-1200. -DrewZilla

Hi there, bought this masterpiece on january, this year. Very comfortable helmet, and very good venting. The graphic looks real amazing (i've got bautista's version) Not cheap, that's true. But i think that shoei's quality in this helmet is really worth it. A must-buy! Bye from Italy and keep going! (sorry for bad spell or mistakes ;) )

I still miss my X-11. X-12 is about the closest I have found, but it's just a bit less comfortable. The biggest problem I have had with my X-12 is the venting in the mouth and shield area. The vent allows father large dust particles to come straight through and shoot up into the eyes while you are riding. seems like they could have put some sort of particulate filter in there to make it better.

The X-12 was my choice when I decided to try some track days. Fit for me was better than the Arai corsair v (chin bar too close to my face). Safety is top notch with the quick pull tabs. Great helmet. The reviews here are very honest and helpful. Keep it up!

The Shoei is lighter and has a smaller profile. I also think the overall build quality is superior on a Shoei over an HJC. With that said, the RPHA 10 is a great helmet for the price. If shelling out the extra clams for the Shoei means you would buy a lesser glove or boot, then save your money and go for the HJC. In terms of safety, they are not so different. ~Ali

@GenomeSoldier71 Yes, the Snell M2010 standard allows for fewer G's but it's still not in line with DOT or ECE standards - closer but not quite there yet. That being said the new standard is good enough that I bought a Snell rated helmet for the 1st time since the Motorcyclist article was published. In fact I bought an X12 - it fits my egg-shaped head very well (plus I only paid $120 for it brand new: perq of being an MSF instructor lol!). It is by far the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn.

@Pmason718 The Corsair V pioneered a lot of what has been copied in other lids. It is insanely light and stable at speed. Don't get me wrong the X12 and the SNELL 2010 Star are phenomnal lids - I have both :-) , but if you can afford it the Corsair V is the helmet to have for comfort, performance, protection and thoroughness of design. Just our opinion, which is always debatable.

All of these helmets fit similarly - snug and slightly narrow! Any would suit your riding style. I think the Shoei X-12 would have the best ventilation of the three, while the Shark is probably marginally lighter. The Arai is solid all around and I'm partial to them given that I'm currently wearing a Signet-Q. -CK

How does the x12 compare to the rf1200 in terms of wind noise. My x12 whistles a lot now that the gasket is starting to dry rot and looking for a new helmet.

@RevZillaTV That's good to know. For some reason I thought the Corsair V and the X12 were neck to neck and the Bell Star was right up under it. What makes the Corsair V pinnacle in your opinion? I like the Corsair V and the X12 but choose the X12 on design (graphics) after comparing all the other important factors. I purchased the B-Boz TC-8 because it came close in color to my bike. How does the Shoei X-12 compare to the HJC RPHA 10? The helmets are in two totally different price categories, but I was wondering if it was worth shelling out the extra for the X-12 if it means better protection and comfort.

I have an X-Eleven but I found it is a fairly warm helmet now that I am riding a full fairing bike. (2014 HD street glide). Does the X-twelve, or any other helmet for that matter, provide any better venting than my X-Eleven behind a full fairing?

Not really. Without airflow you loose ventilation. It seems as though your fairings are restricting the amount of air flowing through your helmet's vents. -Hi-Viz Brian

does x12 provide better vision while tucked in than, say, Qwest (my current helmet). I've been doing some track days and noticed that the visions on Qwest isn't really that satisfying (partially because I'm wearing glasses I guess)

张朔 Yes, the X-12 does provide better upward vision in a tuck. However, the the bigger issue is your glasses. Even without a helmet, if you drop your chin and look upwards, you are looking above the coverage area of your lenses. I recommend trying to keep your chin up in a tuck or using contact lenses. -DrewZilla

Snell ≠ "higher degree" of safety - if anything Snell is less safe based purely on G's transmitted over time. Granted, the M2010 standard is better than the M2005 but it's still not as safe/good as the current ECE or DOT standards. You may not like it but Motorcyclist proved the truth years ago.
