There's a lot of nitpicking here when it comes to Peter Parker. He's obviously supposed to be unlikable at the beginning because the movie is about the dangers of ego and arrogance. Spiderman has been shit on for pretty much the entire past two movies, so when he finally gains popularity from the masses, he abuses his power and goes overboard. That's the lesson he has to learn in order to be the true hero again by the end of the movie when he puts on red and blue suit. I appreciate the fact that in each film, Raimi actually gives Peter a different set of internal obstacles to overcome.

spiderman 3 gets a lot of hate for no reason..its not suppose to be likeable..its meant to make you feel gross and sad..its not that confusing or unfocused its just a bit bloated which is fine for me cause as an end to a trilogy it has to tie up loose ends and i enjoy all the storylines...bring it on....likeability is subjective and pointless to aim for...spiderman does not need to be what you want him to be or how he is 100% in the comics...its a different medium guys....i hate how people hate on spiderman 3 because its popular to do so..i enjoy the goofy sequences cheese and hokey acting that was in the first and second film too..the amnesia plotline is cliche but on its own it works if you are not bored with the trope and seen it like I have in so many other mediums..for kids it works i am sure...the sandman killing uncle ben retroactively with no hints prior in the other films thing is the one major flaw i have with it...not a fan of that choice...but thats a nitpick too honestly..it works for some people to make them hate sandman and make peter's anger make more sense...and tie the films together...i get why they did it just not a personal fan of that choice without any prior seeds planted...feels forced to get me to care and emote again over unlce ben...its a bit manipulative...
@ed1rko173 жыл бұрын
It really seems like certain audience members just don't jive with seeing their heroes struggle internally. You see the exact same reaction with other movies, such as The Dark Knight Rises, The Last Jedi, etc. where people go "that's not Peter Parker! That's not Batman! That's not Luke Skywalker!" when they are being portrayed, intentionally, as flawed. These fans will never admit that of course, but there's certainly no coincidence that every time a mythological character is knocked down a peg, the film gets heavily criticized. To say they are just "unlikable" accepts the premise that your main character should be likable at all times, and going somewhere dark or disturbing is out of bounds. If you look at the reactions to the scene where Peter's dancing and he's all emo/douchey, fans are like "oh it's so cringey!", but it's like "yeah, that's the whole point! It's supposed to be" If look at the extras in the scene, they are all cringing as he's dancing. Now of course, people who don't jive with this kind of story telling will find other reasons to justify why they don't like it, but there is no doubt some truth to what I'm saying that for some people, they just want to see their heroes be heroic, and when they aren't, they think "I don't like that Peter is being this way, this is a flaw with the movie" ... Like when Coy is listing Peter's arrogance and his ego and going "that's not Peter Parker", I don't think that's a valid criticism. Any character is susceptible to these flaws, and just because it doesn't make you feel good doesn't mean that it's a flaw with the film. A flaw with your favourite character does not equate to a flaw with the film.

Loved this! Both Winston and Coy absolutely brought it. And I'm 100% in agreement with Coy regarding the Venom on the Island story. This was one of the most iconic Spider-Man comic books and even more than 20 years later, I remember reading the book and not being able to put it down. Also, Venom was SCARY in those comic books. You kinda feared for Peter's life. I do not believe they ever managed to translate that to the big screen. P.S.: This is also why I have such a hard time with the new Venom movies... one of THE defining factors about Venom is that he is THE nemesis of Spider-Man (in a different way than the Green Goblin - GG is more about psychologically torturing Peter whereas Venom knows everything about him including his secret identity and he is physically far more intimidating) and they just completely left that out... :-(

I don’t get the hate for the Butler scene. It’s obvious from the ending of the first movie that Norman didn’t want Harry to find out at all. Peter doesn’t tell Harry until after he tries to kill him with Goblin equipment. The Butler doesn’t tell Harry until after he finds Harry in Norman’s lair. Anyway, there’s an Editor’s Cut (actually slightly better than the Theatrical Version) that removes and replaces the scene with Harry looking at an old cracked photo of him, Peter and Mary Jane.

Everyone's feelings on the movies are everyone's feelings, but man, does everyone sound harsher on Tobey Spiderman than I recall. I know the third has been universally panned, but maybe the pendulum swung to the love side so much b/c people really wanted a Spiderman movie and, now, 20 years later, people are looking at it less through rose tinted glasses (as Koy said). Also, as a person who sees Koy as this cheerful, love-filled individual just blasting Maguire makes me think he's more Bruce Banner than some love filled weight lifting, comic book loving dude. I just don't see this movie the same way that so many other people do. The whole premise of "three villains, Goblin, Sandman, Venom is too much going on" is just not something that even registers with me. Why? Because it's not that black and white. I know the MCU has made comic book movies that, basically just "here is the good guy, here is the bad guy, they will both get a half baked back story and fight at the end" but that's not what Spider-Man 3 is doing. The villains are just extensions of storylines that were present in all the films, so why is it too much now because they sorta appear like villains? The main villain is Sandman. He drives the plot and story forward. It doesn't need to be that confusing. Goblin? That's just an extension of Harry and Peter's relationship that we've seen in the two previous movies, and it handles it fairly well. I agree that the bump on the head was a little convenient, and how Harry gets the information on how his father died seemed a little rushed, but the overall broad strokes? It was an emotional way to conclude that arc imo. As for Venom? Venom is just an extension of the fact that the real villain in the movie is himself, and that's what he needs to overcome. That's why the Eddie Brock stuff doesn't matter all that much, or the fact that he just shows up at the end. Venom is just an avatar for Peter's inner demons. None of these villains necessarily stand on their own and would be able to carry the film imo. Sandman is great, but he couldn't live up to the previous two villains. But when you have Sandman, Venom, Goblin and Peter all fighting at the end of the movie, it works for me. I think this film is a showcase of pure talent in Sam Raimi as a filmmaker. It is a flawed film, and I know Sam Raimi is particularily hard on himself for it, but I think ultimately his talent shines through so much that he was able to make an unideal circumstance of a battle with the studio actually work because he is just a fundamentally good story teller who can find the humanity in anything. Even with some of the silly stuff with the characters that's a little dated now, the core relationships with Peter, Mary Jane, Harry, and Aunt May really work. They have heart. The new Marvel movies just don't have that.

I am curious how these movies and new one will tie all of that together.

I think Bernard only learnt that Harry is the Goblin in Spider-Man 3, and through this information, pieced together that Norman was The Green Goblin, hence him only telling Harry about his father's situation at that time. Now, this whole scenario is definitely deserving of elaboration and detail, and that's indeed a fault of the film handling too much. I'm surprised you guys didn't mention how Eddie somehow knows about Sandman's daughter and the reason he's robbing banks. That whole scene is off actually - The way Sandman just chucks Venom away and keeps walking forward nonchalantly, with an attitude of "Woah! Not who I was looking for!... Anyhoo, I'll just keep moving along and getting on with my own business. Good day alien or hyena monster".

Hey Kristan I saw a video about how this guy would redo Spider-Man 3 and I wanna get your thought... he was saying pretty much just use venom but instead of throwing Brock in there have the symbiote attach itself to Harry Osborn.. think about it through 2 movies you build Harry hates peter and in the second one he finds out that peter is Spider-Man who killed his dad you have the symbiote take him over the edge then at the end right before venom can kill Spider-Man Harry fights him off and sacrifices himself to kill venom I think it would be the perfect ending of the Harry and peter story

I used to not like Spider-Man 3 when I was younger, now I came to appreciate it a lot more. I don’t think it’s a great movie and it’s nowhere near as good as 1 & especially 2 (The 2nd one is my favorite superhero movie ever), but when I hear people say it’s one of the worst superhero movies ever made, I think it’s kinda undeserved as despite its flaws there are great stuff in here (Like the action sequences, the Birth of the Sandman, most of the performances were really good and it still has fun and charm of the first 2) and even the stuff that people crap on like Emo Peter I just found to be really funny, and not in an unintentional way. And the casting of Topher Grace, I actually liked him as Eddie Brock as he tried to play like if he was mirror version of Peter who lacked all of the morals, as Venom he’s too over the top and feels like he’s in a different movie. And I love the overall theme of forgiveness, egotism and revenge throughout. I do wish Sony and Avi Arad would’ve backed off and let Raimi do the movie he wanted, but I thought he still did the best he could and ended with IMO a decent conclusion, though I did wish we had Spider-Man 4.

What's even more shocking is this movie was the highest grossing Toby-Spider-Man film in the series! Do you think Rami 4 could have happened if this was received well?
@famousthaneus98103 жыл бұрын
I think if Raimi had had a better experience making 3, as well as the critical response being higher, a 4th would’ve happened. Sony really screwed the pooch with how much they stepped in on 3
@Spideymrw3 жыл бұрын
4 was going to happen and they were about to film it before it got cancelled. It was due to a fight between Raimy and Avi Arad

@@scottelement I meant shocking in retrospect.at the time I remember the hype for this film and that's no shock. but looking that it made even more than other Spiderman movies is what blows my mind.

Spider-Man 3 is a wreck but I can still enjoy it. Still, a very disappointing follow up to 2 and unfortunate finale to Raimi’s trilogy. Hoping for more Tobey come No Way Home! Great discussion guys.

I made a comment on your SM-2 review before I saw this one...but thank you for addressing how horrible MJ is, and how terrible the Peter/MJ relationship is. It's another reason I don't like most of the Raimi trilogy, because again as you say, so much of it is devoted to this relationship, and outside of the first one's iconic kiss, the rest of the time it's a time/energy/storyline suck.

The only redeeming quality about Spiderman 3 is the end scene where Harry dies and the score kicks in. The movie is filled with obnoxious overracting and downright weird character choices but this also has a theme of the superhero life consuming you towards the negative side.

Wow I have seen this movie a million times and never thought about the obvious J. Jonah “I don’t like you bc your gf left my son at the aisle” thing. That would have been good dramatic threading from 2 and better texture. The way this movie starts wih “It’s great to be spider-man now and I’m a cocky happy guy now that MJ is with me”. Never worked for me. First of many problems lol.

This film came out when I was 9 and I watched it a ton on DVD when I was a kid. So I've always liked the film. Re-visiting it all these years later my take away was that I still enjoyed watching the film but fucking hell is the screenplay is a botch job. I echo the thoughts of you guys that there was a great film in there but the studio's influence completely ruined it. Sandman and Green Goblin Jr. just being the villians would have been so much better! I never realised how much of a loser Tobey is in these films till I you guys pointed it out in these videos but it was really apparent in this film! Also the dumb and dumber review from a few years back is one of my favourite videos you've ever posted, I occasionally go back and watch that one 😄[insert ellis scream here]

Plenty of people defend this movie and while i don't quite understand why in this case, i do the same thing. I will defend The Last Jedi to the end and i also quite enjoy TASM2 and the Star Wars prequels. The only objectively awful comic book movies are Electra, Venom, Batman+Robin, and Joker. Even then, i would prefer Electra. SM3 is very akin to the Star Wars prequels-definitely not a good film but still fun to watch. Both SM3 and TASM2 are showcases for what a horribly run studio Sony Pictures is. For crying out loud, SM1 and 2 made tons of cash and were intensely loved and yet they suddenly felt the need to interfere and screw up what was clearly working well?! TASM 2 was Sony wanting to rush an MCU of their own. That's 2 times in only 5 years they shot themselves in the neck with idiocy and greed. At this point, Marvel just needs to buy out the Spidey universe rights from Sony. Venom sucked so bad both times it was pushed by Sony, rather than by the storytellers.
