2014- December of 2015 was probably the happiest time of my life as far as being a SW fan. The hype from Schmoes, Collider, and all the movie websites was insane. The energy online was so positive and full of hope. We were lucky to have been united in our hope for SW to return to its rightful place as the most important movie franchise in the world. A fandom with any hate or division-what a lovely thought! TFA was a beautiful love letter to the OT. It hits you right in the heart when you watch it and makes you feel like a kid again. Unbelievably strong performances from everyone involved, incredible action sequences, and powerful emotional moments throughout. No matter how out of place the Rathtar scene feels, I still think this a perfect SW movie in terms of pacing and directing. I love this movie for reinvigorating my love for SW.

Coming up with and discussing theories about where SW could go. "Who is Rey?", "What happened between Luke and Kylo Ren?" "Is Snoke Darth Plagieus?" "Is Finn force sensitive?" Such a fun time. Loved this episode! I couldn't agree with you more, Kristian. I loved this movie when it first came out but watching it the other night some of the shine was taken out of this movie for me because of what you said - you see all of the setup that was just ignored. I still like this movie a lot but it's sad knowing that they botched up the rest of the trilogy (in my humble opinion). There are a couple of things I never liked about this film - I didn't like that Han & Leia were split up. I hated that aspect of the film since they were my OTP since I was 7 years old. I wish we'd gotten to see Luke, Han & Leia all together on screen one last time. I don't know how they thought not putting the big three together was a good idea. I thought they did a good job of making me connect to Rey, Finn, and Poe. I came out of the movie loving the new big 3. The score was amazing as always. I especially liked Rey's theme, Kylo's theme and the Jedi Steps/Finale. Han Solo had great moments as did Chewle. It broke my heart when Han died even though I expected it to happen. It's really a shame that they didn't have some sort of outline for the entire trilogy. So much potential wasted. I'd love to read George's script for this movie. Next week will be rough since I'm not a "Last Jedi" fan but I will rewatch it for the sake of this rewatch series.

Totally with Kristian. I liked the movie well enough when it came out. It was promising. It did feel very surface-level and a whole lot of setup and foreshadowing. Unfortunately it never really went anywhere. And after watching the whole sequel trilogy I can't help but to feel little manipulated as a fan. Disney treated Star Wars first and foremost a product to be pushed to the consumer as fast as possible. Nevermind telling a cohesive story. Which ultimately makes The Force Awakens feel a little speculative. It has all the markers. A desert planet, The Millennium Falcon, a lightsaber, a substitute Luke, a substitute Yoda, a substitute Darth Vader, Death Star, Emperor, etc. All of that means nothing if you don't have a good story and relatable characters, preferably with interesting arcs. I'm happy for everyone who got that out of the sequels. Sadly I didn't.

Before all else - before a plan, before passion, before research, before whether or not the people behind the sequel trilogy knew or loved Star Wars (Im not convinced JJ or Rian or ANYONE gave a hoot about SW beyond "Empire." Is the name Anakin mentioned ONCE in the sequel trilogy?), the failure of this trilogy was in its inspiration. George Lucas had a story to tell. Divine inspiration. Disney had an investment to recuperate. Purely, solely economic inspiration. The failure of the sequel trilogy is that NO one was divinely inspired to tell it.
@doomraven03 жыл бұрын
JJ used to be awesome but he also gave up on great stories long before the end because he just likes to start things and sucks at finishing them. Alias, Lost, Fringe, Star Trek. He does love Star Wars but all he was inspired to do was blast everyone with nostalgia. RJ also loves Star Wars, he has talked obsessively about it in all of his films' commentaries and many interviews. He is also a great writer/director. He likes to tell interesting, unique stories. Had he had an entire trilogy to himself, it would have been great. Having two such different visions screwed this series over. Whatever some people might say, Kathleen Kennedy is a wretched human being and should have been fired a decade ago, regardless of her past success. There are good elements in the ST but what a mess.

I've said this b4 I'm sure, but I still go back and watch the collab Kristian did with Mr.Sunday Movies back at the start if the Star Wars relaunch. Weekly Planet and Mr.Sunday are one of my fave Channels on YT as was Cplloder at the time. So getting to see that collab was a dream come true. My point I guess is that it was such a magical time, that I can still revisit it through those old jedi council episodes. By the time RLM was goofing on the theme park thing I had already lost my enthusiasm so to be honest ti never got the joke until Kristian goofed on himself for it hahahahaha what a saga. Love the emotion of the channel been really finding your stride and building a commrodarry with the audience. We know what type of content to expect, whose typically going to appear and the vibe. It seems you really took fans advice and kept movie and pop culture news/talk as the DNA and threw in your ambitions of a fun morning radio shoot the shit type vibe on top. Which imo is Kristians overall appeal. Always comes with ambition and passion and can have a sense of humour about himself. That's why people like him and schnepp worked so well juxtapositioned with a serious less fun, but equally entertaining Campea way back when. Anyway keep killing it, this channel has become one I get excited for and check daily. I'm slowly being introduced to people I'm less familiar with as well, like Steph or Kate. I'm old-school and know and love Napzok, Riley, Ellis, Roxy, McCuga etc...but by the time collider live was the focus I mostly fell off and only tuned in when a certain group of recognizable faces popped up. Rey was Mary sued at that point and Kylo was kind of a bitch no matter how you excuse with his injuries he lost to someone on their first day. The only way to really reset the stakes are by having snoke be plagueis and kylo have like a force block imposed by luke that limits his power which would show more subtlety how afraid Luke should be it makes it so tfa kylo was an unreleased state AND had doubts which would explain a huge power jump the next movie. The block would also prep the ways luke overstepped with kylo specifically in his order. Then just write a better Luke story where he isn’t just hiding and sad and build from there. It could be done but making kylo an actual villain and just sort of having rey train a bunch and not be op could have possibly saved it.

No. At least not for me. Jon Favreau is a medicore director and Dave Filoni isn't even a proven one outside of Star Wars fandom. Star Wars fans tend to ignore the real duds on Jon Favreau's resume because they see their own fannishness reflected back in him ('he just gets it!'). Favreau hasn't made a live action film in the studio system that hasn't been made under controlled conditions since Cowboys & Aliens ran into trouble a decade ago. And don't forget that Harrison Ford might be less than keen to work with him again after that movie laid an egg. But Harrison Ford was a strong supporter of JJ Abrams going back even to Regarding Henry, and it's been plausibly suggested that Kathy Kennedy was determined to get a director that Harrison Ford already knew and respected as a sweetener for him to reprise a role that he was always ambivalent at best about. And the obvious one - Spielberg- wasn't on the table. Favreau's last five films as a director: Iron Man 2, Cowboys & Aliens, Chef, The Jungle Book, The Lion King..At best two decent movies out of five. Him doing the sequel trilogy may well have ended up as a case of 'beware what you wish for'. Besides, if Favreau had ended up doing the sequel trilogy then The Mandalorian would almost certainly not have happened.

2014-16 was a great time to be a Star Wars fan as it was the only time since 1983 that the majority of fanbase was positive towards the direction of the franchise. The speculation before and after The Force Awakens was so fun and Collider was a big part of that. Then The Last Jedi came out and it was the Prequels all over again with the fanbase. My metaphor is Luke throwing the lightsaber is like Disney throwing away all the good will they built up over 3 years.

I totally get what you mean about this film shows all the missed opportunities. To me rhe biggest missed opportunity is in Rise of Skywalker with Kylo Ren and his redemption. I hated that they did it but if you were gonna have someone talk to Kylo/Ben it should of been Anakin. Kylo had all this Vader worship and it would've been so much more powerful had Anakin appeared to him and tell him how he was wrong and that a redemption could be had. I was so bummed we never got an Anakin appearance in this trilogy. It could've tied it all together from the Original to the prequel to the sequel trilogy. Thank you to Kristian, Steph and Mike for another compelling discussion. My take, by the by? I agree with much of the tone of the conversation, but I would disagree with Kristian's assement that it should have been the reveal of Luke seeing him catching that lighsaber flying through the air. To my mind, that's fannishness talking, not movie critique. To say 'the theater would have erupted', well, yeah.... only if that theater audience is composed entirely of middle-aged fanboys and nostalgia hounds.. To everyone else, it would have just looked like an unkempt old dude popping up out of nowhere, undercutting the drama and confusing the heck out of the general public..And entirely taking away the agency and moment of self-actualisatuon for the lead character that we've just spent the last two hours watching and rooting for. That plays better as Rey's big moment, all the way. Indulging in fannish dog whistles for their own sake is a game for amateurs. Just my view. Opinions, like the weather, may of course vary.

Well I was with you until the insulting comment of middle aged fanboys. Mark Hammil himself had said he wanted that moment. The moment itself could have fit the story but was it needed? Take Starkiller base away and flip it, make the First Order on the run. Cpt. Phasma, the Knights of Ren and Snoke, break my hear to an extent. I don't understand fans who think the reason Luke went into hiding was some "important mission". Han said one of his students(later revealed fo be Ben, Luke's nephew) destroyed the temple and killed his students and then Luke went away. That's it. Even if you don't have the "tried to kill his nephew" part you still have Luke's own student, his nephew turning to the Dark Side and becoming Vader 2.0. Besides the obvious issue that they did not have a plan for the whole trilogy, I think the biggest issue of the whole trilogy was just a lack of creativity and risk taking. I really feel that George's vision was needed, or someone like a George. What I mean by this: 1. Let's start with the overall filming style. Everybody loves that they ditched the CGI from the prequels and made it practical effects. The way I see, and the way George probably sees it, for the original trilogy, they really pushed the limit of what was possible for the effects at the time. And the same was done for the prequels, that CGI was insane for the time. This new trilogy did not have to be insane CGI, but I feel like they did not try to push themselves to create any type of special effects or visually stunning shots that are memorable. They made these movies way too quickly. 2. Even if you had zero problems with my point above and loved the practical effects, I did love them too to use as a nice base. There was seemingly no new environments, no new ships, not that many new and creative species (Maz was an exception.) I did not feel any type of childhood wonder put into these films (the last jedi was actually quite creative and is an outlier, but I didn't like the actual film). The ST felt uninspiring, and there was nothing that stimulated my mind. The same goes for the score of the films. I like certain parts, but there was no NEW style. The original trilogy has all the classics, and the prequels had a different type of sound like duel of the fates and the plaguies theme. Some operatic type stuff. This new trilogy soundtrack did nothing new. Just stayed within the original trilogy style. But i cant be too tough on the guy, he was in his 80s 3. Overall plot points. A) The OT was a small group of rebels taking down the empire, the PT was showing how the republic got taken down. So the whole story of the ST should have been something besides on of these 2. But of course, we just get the OT setup. B) the rule of two for the sith seems to still be in place. and it limits where you can go in the story. I thought it was pretty cool that they killed snoke , but then to bring back the emporer is so meh. They could have made kylo the main bad for episode 9. or instead of going with the rule of 2, why not incorporate the knights of ren more and show a whole team of sith, and fight a whole team of jedis or something. This is why Luke's academy crumbling is such a boring plot point cuz it leaves us exactly where we were in A new hope, no jedis, no hope (besides rey). in summary: I think we all agree the PT biggest iussue was dialogue & directing. The ST trilogy biggest issue was just overall plot, and shitty lore, so it wasnt the directing and characters. The solution was always clear to me, and it was actually kinda part of the original plan? Keep George on the team to write the troligy loosely (or if you really hate it) use him as a creative consultant. You could have had a filoni type (or anyone) write the whole trilogy while consulting george. This way we can keep all the amazing characters disney created, but give them something actually interesting to do. and give them proper arcs. And put them in new environments with new stories and have the story go in new places or even have a completely unconventional way of tackling a star wars trlogy. But you can do that, and also respect the old legacy characters, and their motivations. I think a rian johnson (for example) directed trilogy with filoni and George writing it would have been a 9/10 trilogy. Keep all that love from the PT and dont make the same mistakes. But they over corrected and took 0 risks.

Ah...the hype leading up to The Force Awakens...what a great time that was. After my last rewatch I believe: 1. Finn also had an "awakening" and JJ probably planned for him to become a Jedi all along. 2. Rey coming from Palpatine enriches TFA, but it's hard to tell if Palpatine was part of the "plan". 3. Rey isn't a Mary Sue like a lot of the audience claims. She makes a lot of mistakes in this film, but quickly learns from them. As for flying the Falcon, I never had a problem with her doing that. She even tells Finn she had no idea how she made those crazy maneuvers on Jakku, so I just assumed the Force kinda took over for her. Like the PT, I have found the ST more enjoyable when I watch it without thinking about what they could have done. Some of the potential was wasted, but other potential can still come to fruition ie Finn becoming a Jedi. All I can do now is hope Lucasfilm has a plan for Episodes 10-12.

Just thought Poe singlehandedly flying into the trench, then oscillator and destroying it seemed wayyyy too quick. Before anyone says, yes fin could have been a girl and he’s he or she still could have been black. There is something fascinating about fin escaping from the empire after being a storm trooper. It would have been refreshing to see a protagonist in the series not to be naturally strong with the force. Having a protagonist that’s heart is stronger than his force powers could go along way. He or she could have lost over and over again leading up to he or she being a Jedi in the last movie of the trilogy. One major problem all Star Wars movies face (after the success of the original trilogy) is the limited runtime of movies in general. While the prequels still make the most of their time, sometimes even resorting to clipshow-mechanics to cover some ground, they still tell an overall coherent story. But only Episode 3 was regarded as a "pretty good movie" at first, because we wanted more out of our "dear Star Wars" and were left with the impression that those movies were all we'd ever get from the official movie canon. This was until Star Wars animation stepped in and fleshed out the "calatogue" the prequel movies were and made them great, to a point where even the Original Trilogy got bumped up with Rogue One and Rebels. The sequels in particular suffer from a kind of selective skeleton-writing in various ways: after what happend to the prequels, they seem to rely a lot on the idea of establishing characters and worlds in the first place with often brief apperances. Instead of fleshing out ideas and run with it, they concentrate on the core narrative which, on top of all that, hadn't been planned out from start to finish. The Force Awakens does the best job of the three movies to give us a compelling overall story before things turn divisive in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Apart from whether you like or dislike the way the sequel trilogy goes, the final movie in particular is a perfect example of the strategy to fill a movie with basic ideas, that may or may not be fleshed out in the future through Disney+ series. It's a clipshow almost from start to finish. I think with the sequels they finally went from expanding the universe outside the silver screen "out of a necessity" to relying on animation and live-action shows "by design". To us the audience this even amplifies the premise of movies only having a limited time to make themselves worthwile to a point where these movies by themselves can only fail to satisfy our hunger for MORE coherent Star Wars. The result feels rushed and empty increasing the need need to explain "assumed" plotholes or untold (but present) parts of the story and character arcs. It's a steep call the original movies didn't have to face. There was no internet fandom looking after every detail at that time, for most people those movies were all there was and they told the best story they could with what the creators had in mind - today we live in a world where Star Wars creators are aware of an "add later" DLC-mentality. To a certain extent this might even be a better way, since a contemporary movie with all the lore of the Star Wars universe behind it, will most likely not be able to flesh out everything in the first place in under four hours. I think that's a big reason why the sequel trilogy falls short in it's current state and the expected grand finale didn't feel like a worthy payoff. There are other issues, too! But this one may be fixable over time!

The first two acts of this film are the best two acts of the Sequel trilogy and still have major issues. I also really dislike Starkiller Base, it's the third Death Star and it's unnecessary. This film set up the trilogy to fail by repeating all the same story beats of A New Hope. It makes ROTJ meaningless. Side-note: I dislike JJ's Star Trek films for all the same reasons that Mike likes them hahaha. He turned Star Trek into a fast paced action flick. Those old shows like Next Generation and Deep Space Nine are much slower pace. A lot of the episodes were resolved through nonviolence. Love the discussion.

Yeah lots of hard core Trek fans don't like his version.

I still love the force awakens but every time I re watch it I feel sad at all of the obvious missed opportunities. 8 and 9 where not it for me but 7 showed much promise

Here’s my deal with the fandom today. Take marvel for instance. If I tell someone I love Age of Ultron and it’s one of my favorite mcu movies, I don’t get hit with “well you’re not a true Marvel fan then” by everyone that opposes that view. With Star Wars, I say I love just about everything of the sequels and NOT the prequels. I’m consistently told I’m not a Star Wars fan 🤣🤣 it’s lovely

That is silly for people to say that to you. Loving what you love and enjoying or not enjoying is your right as a fan. It is Star Wars, I LOVE the fact that you enjoy all of it. Envious!

me and all my friends thought right out of the movie that she was related to Luke or Obi wan, ALSO remember rian johson made JJ change the last scene where he was supposed to be lifting rocks with the force so clearly JJ had a different plan
