It was a ground breaking science fiction film that surprised everyone and would up being one of the greatest films in the last 30 years. In the lead up to the 4th film, Matrix Resurrections, we will be doing a rewatch of the Matrix films before the release of the 4th film. When you guys re-watch 2 & 3, I'd like to hear Kate's feelings on it first before Coy or Kristian interject with their thoughts/feelings on it b/c I don't think the other two are big fans of the sequels. I've watched some people watch the SW prequels completely devoid of the initial hate/dislike at the time of the release as well as the recent pushback/love for it. I just moved to Tennessee from Indiana and my new friends came to my house and "kidnapped" me and we watched Matrix in my friends Basement and I was changed forever...I was a geek but this movie helped me embrace it more! Great rewatch video. Kate seems to be having fun seeing these films.for the first time, Kristian is a longtime fan going along for the ride, and Coy is giving these films a breakdown with a ton of added knowledge that gives new insight to a heavy film series. Coy uses this film as a way of understanding organized religion without being a practicing believer, and that's totally his prerogative. I remember seeing this film as a kid, and just enjoying the action and the story. Years later, a college theology class opened my eyes to many of the deeper meanings within. As a practicing believer, I want to be Morpheus, steadfast in his because he knows Neo is the truth. Or maybe I want to be Trinity, finding purpose and love within my beliefs. But, sometimes that artificial steak tastes so good, and who doesn't like seeing the Woman in the Red Dress sometimes. But I'm trying. I'm trying really hard to be Morpheus. I guess that's the struggle of belief, right? To believe even when it's the unpopular opinion. Anyway, I'm looking forward to more episodes of this rewatch. Thanks guys.

Thanks for this rewatch. For me the Matrix was a masterpiece; the story, the visuals, the action, the casting, the dialogue, the music, the editing, everything. The ending when Neo and Trinity enter the building to save Morpheus, from their footsteps is like this finely choreographed dance, and it is like a religious experience, I am so present when I watch it. I can appreciate 2 and 3 for some of its philosophical exposition, but they were a miss for me. And Coy, I could listen to you for another hour on your Matrix breakdown, how you explained the Oracle scene, never understood those nuances till now. I’m nervous for 4, have high hopes, but not sure if it will deliver, but for sure will never destroy 1, that was perfection. 🥰😎✌🏾

The whole rescuing morpheous bit is a lot of surpassing limits through his belief. When he's manning the minigun and he's in the thick of it he is so focused and has tremendous belief that the plan is working that he knows hes not gonna hurt Morpheous. The more interesting part is when he grabs the rope attached to the helicopter because I honestly believe he thought he was gonna catch and hold it to save trinity.

This was a great episode! You guys did touch on it, but I feel like you need to further emphasize how much of a milestone this movie was for the action genre in general. I mean, this movie stands the test of time and it can be listed together with movies like Die Hard, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Mad Max: Fury Road, all milestones in the action genre. It elevated the game and showed everybody else what was possible. Yes, it is a great Sci-Fi film, but it might be an even better action movie. They came up with new ways to film scenes to do these elaborate camera pans around a character (like the camera going around Trinity at the very beginning when she's jumping up and kicking a dude through a door, etc.). They were so inventive and it all turned out so very well (unlike the CGI in Matrix 2 that is clearly dated). Coy's mind works in truly mysterious ways, but I loved his deep dives. I still remember when The Matrix first hit theaters. I saw ONE trailer and decided I didn't have to see any after that... the entire marketing campaign (at least in my country) was "what is the Matrix" and going into the movie, no one *really* knew. Yes, some people saw more trailers and they knew more of the cool scenes, but nobody *really* had an idea of what to expect. And boy did that movie blow everybody's mind. ^^ I loved learning about the whole concept in the movie itself, not being spoiled by lengthy breakdowns or the 4th and 5th trailer which happens way too often these days. While the movie is awesome, it is even more special for me because of the time when I saw it (I was a teenager only a little older than Coy) and what that entire experience was like.

The Matrix not only reinvented the Cyberpunk, Action genre for the millennium. But he reinvented society's view on the powers that be and also our views on the middle class 9-5 conventional job scenario. It made us question on if our governments really have our best interests at heart? It made us question why should as aspire to work 9-5 jobs for a boss that we can't stand for a company that doesn't''t truly value us. You could say The Matrix created the Alex Jones and the David Icke of the world. It helped make being a conspiracy theorist mainstream and acceptable.

Like I said in a call-in on Collider Live once, The Matrix did right what Man Of Steel did wrong. By the third act Neo had to stop listening to everyone else and BELIEVE he is the one and take charge of his destiny. In MOS Superman doesn't have that moment and just keeps listening to Pa Kent or Jor-El the whole way through. I just wanted that "He's beginning to believe" moment, that's all :)

As much as your guest here is getting excited about questioning authority, what he seems to ignore is that this swings in both directions of the political aisle. We've got a serious pandemic right now, and there are certain people on the right (not all of course) questioning everything about the virus, public health policy - its absurd. Scepticism as an absolute is not a healthy mindset, sometimes we just have to defer to people who know more about a subject or area, and accept what they tell us, even if they themselves admit to be unsure on certain things. A government urging vaccination is indeed a form of control, but control need not necessarily be an evil. A government signing off on food rationing during a war is a more potent form of control, and yet if the war is won, how can we say it wasn't worth it? A parent has to keep control of their young children for their own good. "Question everything" sounded cool to me as a 16 year old too, but when you grow up, you learn things aren't that simple. Doubt can become paranoia, look at the US capitol in January, for crying out loud, Coy. We all have to faith in democracy and medicine (very Morpheus-esque!)

I always smile at the reference to Wabash & Lake which is a real street in Chicago which is incredible being in the Chicagoland area and the Wachowskis being from Chicago. Coy missed the philosophy thought experiment “Brain in a VAT” which is intended to draw out certain features of human conceptions of knowledge, reality, truth, mind, consciousness, and meaning. The situation outlines that which a machine remove a person's brain from the body, suspend it in a vat of life-sustaining liquid, and connect its neurons by wires to a supercomputer which would provide it with electrical impulses identical to those the brain normally receives. According to such stories, the computer would then be simulating reality and the "disembodied" brain would continue to have perfectly normal conscious experiences, such as those of a person with an embodied brain, without these being related to objects or events in the real world.

Let's just say I was on some HEAVY mind altering substances when I watched all three films for the first time lol. I watched all of them in a row that night. I got in my head pretty good. Like, thinking... "Is THE MATRIX just a movie created by the Machines to trick us into thinking that the actual Matrix couldn't be real? But, in reality we are actually in The Matrix right now but, we'd never figure it out because, to us, it's just a movie and it could never happen in real life?" Yeah, this movie fucked me up when I first saw it lol.

One moment I only recognized recently was the guy buying the program from Neo makes a comment about "it's the only way to fly" and at the end we see there's another way to fly. Also, "no dick pics" feels like it has the "no capes" energy.

The thing about the matrix is it’s not just one movie. So it faalsshortbof what coy is trying to explain. It becomes more Christian and less an allegory for history and science. It’s not what it tried to be. So for me it’s a bad metaphor. We aren’t in the matrix but we are connected
