Here's my 1994 interview with actor/filmmaker Rob Reiner. We talked about his early, pre-"All In the Family" TV roles which led to his story about being yelled at by Desi Arnaz. (As a college student, I was pushed by an angry Arnaz at a 1980 TV telethon after his scheduled appearance was cut. Reiner understood my shock.)

He was fighting a tight budget at the time. At renewal, the network said yes for same money, no increase. Desi asked the talent to agree to save show, 3/4 did. Roger Corman refused, insisted on a jump, got recast and we lost a funny show. Screwing the other 3 leads.

Desi pretty much invented modern television. If he got upset with improvising, I would have listened. Lucy was the same way. No improvising allowed and she would tell you exactly how she felt. When you are a guest on a show, you do as they ask. It’s their show, their project. Their art. Desi always gets a bad rep, but he was an amazing man who gave us modern TV.

Even though I can't stand Rob Reiner as a person, Desi was out of line for getting physical. Trust me, he wouldn't have tried that if he was super fortunate enough to have Marlon Brando improvising on one of his shows (of course Brando wouldn't have done t.v.). @@johnnybmean74that's 🐃💩. Sorry but an actor doesn't just get to do whatever they want because they're talented or have star power 🙄 First of all, let's get something straight from the start.......Rob Reiner is certainly NO Marlon Brando. He was beyond mediocre & frankly the only reason he made it anywhere in Hollywood was because of his daddy's influence & connections. Rob Reiner should have been considerate of the others on the set instead of only caring about indulging his own whims. A good deal of movies/shows let actors improvise - and many others prefer the actors stick to the script. Rod Serling was one who was known to demand that actors stick to exactly what was written in the script. As was Lucille Ball. And legendary actresses like Joan Crawford & Elizabeth Taylor who guest starred on Lucy's shows went onto say how strict Lucy was about it Yes, as an actor it's nice to have the freedom to play around & experiment with your part & adlib etc But you have to respect others too- like the producers/directors who want it a certain way or fellow actors who don't appreciate changes. Not to mention that Rob Reiner was literally just starting out at the time. So it makes it even worse that he was that arrogant.
@johnnybmean74
@johnnybmean74 8 ай бұрын
@@kleeamd8274 Who compared him to Brando? Not me. My point was that if he was Brando, Desi would not have gotten physical with him. Marlon would've beaten Desi's ass to the ground. As far as actors like Brando having great power to wield, it is well-documented how much power he had on movie sets. 100 Years from now Brando's talents will still be recognized & respected, while people like Crawford, Ball & Taylor will be long forgotten.

@@johnnybmean74 I hate to say this but you DID compare Reiner to Brando. Crawford wasn't that good an actress, nor was Elizabeth Taylor. Lucy however has proven the test of time. As for Reiner himself I wouldn't call him "less than mediocre" but if you are going to say that Crawford and Taylor won't be rememebred then surely Reiner won't be either. Desi and Lucy are though as the comedic duo they have been since I Love Lucy wrapped.

Some of us grew up in an era pre HR, and when if you were grabbed, (either sexually or like this), yelled at, or treated in any of the ways where you would be sent to some seminar today.....we simply had to learn to cope with it. I was screamed at by Rob Reiner. I was a courier at the time and went to the Sony lot to pick up sheet music for a film that he was making. I went and his assistant came over and apologized that it wont be ready for another 20 mins and asked if I’d mind waiting (thats code for please don’t charge me wait time). It was 8 in the morning and they had a huge spread of food on the table so I said “sure, no problem.. do you mind if I have a bagel?” She smiled and said “Oh please, I’ll make one for you.” Reiner stands up screaming “HOLD IT!!” The conductor stops everybody freezes and turns to him. He says, “YOU, THE DAY YOU SIT IN THIS CHAIR THEN YOU CAN ASK FOR A BAGEL. DON’T GIVE HIM ANYTHING!!” I turned to his assistant and said I need to call my dispatch to let them know I’ll be late so they can start the clock.” Btw I’m Latino and most likely he has issues with us as the other drivers had similar stories about him. Most of Hollywood has issues with us.

Cuban tempers are like Italian tempers-it’s cultural and it means something different from a Waspy type truly toxic temper. It’s just passion. Desi Arnaz had one of the best reputations, professionally, in Hollywood. Everyone who worked for him was loyal, he let people do their jobs, and was the best boss ever. He knew what he wanted. After he divorced Lucy, she had to turn into the hard producer, running everything, and sadly, it kind of ruined her great child like talent. Before the divorce, she came to the set to play and rehearse and create. After the divorce it was work work work, and she really missed having her producer/protector. Well actually, he continued to produce the great Lucy Show for the first few seasons, then stopped due to his alcoholism disease. Lucille Ball 1951-1966 was the greatest comedian on TV, who ever lived. After 1966, she just turned hard. Some good moments, but the classic Lucy was gone. Anyway… Oh how I loved Desi Arnaz and everything he represented about the classic immigrant/America/Hard work/ joi de vivre… He was just beloved. So don’t let this make you feel differently about him. Carl Reiner (Rob’s father) worshipped Desi. All Hollywood knew how great he was. He built the sitcom industrial complex in Hollywood. Just an Amazing American story.

Actually, I keep hearing that Desi's womanizing was part of the Latin culture - he was an addict: sex, booze, and gambling. All his life and the more he drank the worse he got, in terms of making bad decisions and letting his temper really rip. Got arrested a few times for such behavior after his divorce. This is not being Cuban or Latin, his "stuff" was addictions.

Yes, in the middle of the 1950's his drinking was really out of hand. Had a drink first thing in the am when he got up, and was drunk by the afternoon. And when drunk he had a raging temper. Actually police had been called on him. He had a friend, who played his manager on the show, he went into a rage about something - a minor prop that was not his fault - cursing and yelling in front of the cast and crew. The fellow left on the spot and never returned.

Desi was a hot-blooded Cuban. He definitely had a temper. It's part of what broke up him and Lucy in the end. Lucy had a temper too, and the two of them would clash. It's funny, people say that redheads tend to have a quick temper, and they aren't wrong, but Lucy wasn't a natural redhead.
@gingermurray

Desi may have been a hot blooded Cuban, but Desi was the consummate professional on the set of I Love Lucy. It was Lucy who made life miserable for not only Desi but cast and crew also. Lucy was a perfectionist who demanded perfection from everyone. It was Lucy not Desi causing constant chaos on the set and off. Who was left to clean up Lucy’s mess? Desi. HE had to go and make peace with the people Lucy offended. Desi left Lucy after 20 years of marriage because he couldn’t stand her bossiness no longer. The man worked his whole life, he wanted peace and calm now. You say they clashed? Yes, about Lucy’s behavior on the set. Desi was no angel either. He was a drinker and womanizer that’s what they argued about.

Desi was known to have a temper on off screen is why I think Lucy had enough of him and divorced the man
@hollybigelow5337
@hollybigelow5337 Жыл бұрын
It's pretty well documented that she divorced him because his womanizing was out of control and so was his drinking. Most people say it wasn't just the fact that he was doing so much womanizing. She was also sick of constantly having to hush it up and was convinced the story would break any time. It was a constant source of private heartache, but she really couldn't take the disrespect she would feel if the whole world knew about it and also knew she hadn't done anything about it. Lucy also was known to have quite the temper, and in some ways while their mutual tempers made for a fairly tempestuous relationship, I'm convinced if it had been their tempers alone the relationship would have survived partly because since they both had tempers and artistic temperments and exacting standards they at least understood each other in ways that no one else did, so they were both less likely to hold any fights against each other. It wasn't individual fights that caused their primary problems, it was the two fights that kept happening over and over and over again. It probably was good for both of them to ultimately end up with calmer partners, but like I said I doubt that alone would have been enough to drive them clear to divorce. In spite of everything, they both adored each other till the day they died, and they both worked really hard to try to make things work, so if it had only been tempers I'm convinced based on how hard they were working to stay together they would have succeeded if that had been their only major problem.
