I absolutely love Lucy the show and the actress and I love Desi as well, however anytime I hear her talk about her parents it makes me feel deeply uncomfortable in my spirit because she has never talked about her mother with the love and reverence and pride that she does when she talks about her father, she always always makes Lucy the bad guy and her father the poor poor victim. She dwells on every negative thing she can get away with without pissing off her mother's fans and glosses and glides over all the crap her dad did

I don’t agree that children are “blank pieces of paper.” For example, twins and triplets, who experience their home environment at the same point in time/ same environment(not like older and younger siblings, who experience their parents at different points in time) and yet each one is different. I believe that everyone is born with a distinct personality and tendencies toward certain likes, dislikes, fears, passions: and that parents add to that. Parents DO very much so influence their child’s outcome, BUT there is already a personality blueprint from birth.

Lucie Arnaz is an amazing woman. She is able to see the wrong in her past and actually work on making things better. I can totally identify with the whole control thing. Lucille Ball tried to take what she had in the fifties and drag it into the eighties. Unfortunately the world had moved on which left her feeling lonely. She felt like she had to be the center of the world to matter. Had she lightened up a little and just let herself age gracefully with her fans she would have known how loved she was. I think Lucille Ball felt like she had to be relevant to be loved. That is probably why she did Life with Lucy. Old formula that no longer works equals her fans don't love her anymore. Problem is we never stopped loving her, we just moved on with a different kind of comedy for the 1980's.

I really don't think it was quite like that, regarding the TV show - close but not quite. The "Life With Lucy" show was a show in search of an idea. Yes, it recycled everything from "I Love Lucy" but also Lucy's other past TV shows of the 1960s and 1970s. The "Life With Lucy" TV family other than Lucy was totally forgettable, not powerhouses in their own right like Desi Arnaz and yes, William Frawley and Vivian Vance. Gale Gordon was brought on to the "Life With Lucy" show, but it again was a recycle of her past TV shows. What made "I Love Lucy" so compelling was the surprise element of the physical comedy. You would see new things tried and surprise is always an element of comedy. Once the surprise is gone and it becomes predictable, I don't care what era you are in. The "Life With Lucy" show had no central idea or goal to be reached, like thousands of sitcoms these days that don't have a storytelling vibe - just there. Regarding all of the other insights you made, I do think you are right and have great insight. The need to be relevant and loved to the present day, etc. Even though we all love Lucy to this day, with or without a more current TV show.

I really appreciated this thoughtful interview. It must have been some time ago. Lucie was so refreshingly honest and I love how she shared what she had learned over the years about herself, her parents and how it has impacted bringing up her own children. Boy was she right when she says no one teaches you how to be a parent and I love how she had such a realistic view of her Mom's parenting style. She was forgiving of it knowing that Lucy must have only learned and applied what she had learned from her own parents, grandparents, etc. There is such a tendency these days to blame ones parents for all of our dysfunction. While there may be some truth there, grace should also be applied liberally because people naturally follow familial patterns from prior generations.

Looking back, this interview confirms that even though I didn't know a great deal about Lucie Arnaz, I always sensed that from among her, her brother and parents, she was the one who had her feet most firmly planted on the ground. Therefore she was also the one most likely to be the happiest and healthiest. Thanks for sharing this.

People change; things change, Carolyn. If you expect things to stay the same as it was in 1990, then you're fantasizing. Celebrities are humans just like everybody else. All the same faults and foibles you may have, they also had. Ask the Crosby boys about how it was growing up with Bing or ask the Lewis boys how it was with Jerry. The things about them that made them great entertainers were not necessarily the same things that made them good parents or decent human beings.

There was a generation of very strict parents, which beget a generation of almost laissez faire parents, which created the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality and now that generation has an entitled mentality. I am hoping that it swings back the other way, but somewhere in between control freak and laissez faire

How do we navigate back to having conversations like this one? This was an awesome exchange between Joan Rivers and Lucie Arnaz which connects on so many levels. This was 1990. 34 years later, I wish we would be capable of bringing back the ability for us to have a conversation just like this one.

Phenomenal interview. So many dynamics at play. I wonder whether Ball's frustration, hurt and disappointment over Arnaz, whom everyone knows she loved deeply till the day he died, affected her emotional availability to his children.

This hits home and is so insightful. I broke many cycles that I desperately didn't want to pass on to my kids. And next month my husband and I celebrate 23 yrs of marriage. We tried hard to become pregnant. Before we started trying we made a pact. That no matter what happened between us we wouldn't project our mess on to our kids. That no matter what, we were partners in raising the lives we created and to be better than we were treated. Thankfully we are still going strong and our boys have had better than us. Today they work with dad and I at a dental lab as Dental lab techs. Cycles can be broken.

Wow, I love how honest she was. Looking at her mother's interviews, she got some of that from her mother. Before she said she was closer to her father, I could guess it as she says "my father, my dad" while frequently referring to her mom as her pronoun "she". I was naturally closer to my father but most people who know me can't tell because I spent so much more time with my mom.

It’s always startling to see how real people could sometimes be back then. Celebrities are all so media-trained now, which of course they have to be bc entertainment journalism is more vicious and sensational than ever, so everyone’s so careful. It’s really refreshing to see two straight shooters just talk about the realities of fame
