I dragged myself back from crippling PTSD and obesity. I figured all of this out and now I teach others how to create balance. It’s so weird having an actual neuro scientist come to the exact same model. So often I feel insecure because I am the ONLY one out here teaching this model and more importantly HOW to work with it. I’m a human geographer PhD turned internet guru lol. But my sociological outlook definitely helped me puzzle this out. Anyway, I’m emboldened by this video. Makes me feel more confident that what I’m teaching will come to be the norm. Which makes it all the more important to keep getting the message out. Thank you Ali

00:00 🧠 The brain model introduced involves the orbital frontal cortex (emotions) and the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (reasoning) - two systems at play. 01:23 🤔 Emotional reactions trigger the orbitofrontal cortex, leading to behavior based on feelings and intuition, often ignoring facts or logic. 02:06 🎻 These brain systems act like an orchestra, with the orbitofrontal cortex emphasizing emotion and past experiences while the dorsal lateral areas focus on rationality and thinking. 03:16 💻 The brain's center operates as a "computer," influenced by imprinted beliefs, which the thinking systems (emotion and logic) follow in decision-making. 04:38 🐒 When humans act irrationally, their behavior resembles that of chimpanzees, indicating emotional reactivity controlled by a shared brain system. 06:15 🧒 Child development shows the early dominance of emotional reactivity (chimp brain), with logical reasoning (human brain) emerging later around ages two or three. 07:12 🧠 The human brain (logic and calmness) contrasts with the chimp brain (reactive and impulsive), with most people leaning towards a neurotic chimp system, though there's a spectrum of chimp behaviors.

I would just add that he concludes by discussing the BENEFIT of the "chimp" brain. : - ) 07:23 Research shows the VALUE of having a fast and reactive chimp brain (which most people do) because it powers our intuition. This helps us respond quickly when needed, including in sports and other situations, as well as avoiding danger. 07:58 He says it can be your best friend because research shows our intuitive skills are far more *accurate* initially than when we have to use reason and facts. 08:12 Research shows people who learn to use both systems well fare the best. 🐒+🤔=🤓
