Star Wars is read, at least to me, as a history of a galaxy. It’s politics, religions, economies, technology, etc. all exactly like how we experience on Earth.-George Lucas was trying to recreate mythology but that is a product of the characters, their traits, how the *history* plays out. Even disregarding how bad the sequels are as a reason not to play the sequel characters, out of all of them only Kylo Ren is that viable in HVV. Luke in that game is superior to Rey in almost every way aside from base damage, Leia and Han are just better options than Finn, and Bossk is a better option (in most encounters) than Phasma.

Michael Arndt (writer of Toy Story 3 and "Little Miss Sunshine") was the original writer who was supposed to write Episode 7 and outline 8 and 9. I believe he was picked by Lucas as well. Arndt has escaped criticism because he was let go and Abrams and Kasdan (and Kasdan has also escaped a lot of criticism) had to take over writing Ep 7. Arndt failed to complete a single draft of Ep 7, and he is the reason Luke was pushed to the end of TFA. Arndt has admitted that he couldn't figure out a way to bring in Luke without him "overshadowing" Rey and taking over the story, so he kept pushing his appearance further and further to the end. When he failed to turn in a draft they had to fire him and Abrams and Kasdan had to step in and quickly come up with a draft they could shoot. They didn't have time to rewrite the basic idea enough to bring Luke into the story (again, because of Arndt) so they left him for Johnson to handle. Johnson basically took the idea of Luke in exile that was supposed to be set up and resolved in Ep7 and used it for Ep8, but he also kept the idea that Luke would die in Ep8, so that story was horribly compressed so we had no time with a reinvigorated Luke. Luke was supposed to come back by the end of Ep7 and be there for Ep8 as the Master Jedi we wanted. Arndt needs to be mentioned more when people complain about the sequel trilogy. The catastrophe we got started because Arndt didn't want Luke to overshadow Rey and was not good enough as a writer to make it work. The idea of Luke in exile and needing to be found seems to have been an early idea from when Lucas was still working with Lucasfilm. It may be different than the initial idea he gave them (based on an interview he gave for the "Star Wars Archives" book for the Prequels) though it might have been a change he made as he gave his literal stamp of approval to art that was depicting a Luke who was described as being similar to Col. Kurtz. He obviously wouldn't have been as dark as Kurtz, but was a figure in self-exile who had to be tracked down. The Rey character was also compared to Willard tracking down Kurtz. Lucas was originally supposed to direct Apocalypse Now and then took some of his ideas with him when he started working on Star Wars, so it makes some sense that he might have been thinking of those ideas again for the sequels. But as I said, Luke would have been found, eventually agreed to train Rey, and been back to his old self all within Ep7.

They made so many terrible mistakes the list is close to endless by now. And what truly makes it perhaps saddest of all is that Rey absolutely could have been everything KK & her goons wanted her to be. She could have become this super-powerful diad in the Force, a master in her own right teaching others. But NOT on the expense of Luke & everybody else! Luke should have been everything he always should have been post ROTJ &, when the time was right in the story, passing on the role to Rey, her following in his footsteps. The grand mistake was that Rey didn't follow Luke, she pushed him aside & just took his place, unworthy & anything but ready. We could have had it all. Luke should have been amazing, Rey - with the right writers - should have been amazing. So many even speculated when she was first announced as a character before TFA came out whether or not she could even end up being Luke's daughter or something. There was no hate towards any female protagonist following in Luke's footsteps or even being related to him, there was none of that at all. KK & current Lucasfilm didn't only destroy Luke for us all. They actually destroyed Rey as well, everything she was meant to be, too. Rey was meant to be someone truly special, a new female hero for all of us to love & admire. They stole all that from us by making her a nobody with constant identity crisis & having no goal of her own, by constantly being too perfect & never evolving or being tested. All of this was so totally unnecessary. We could & should have had it all, & not been divided either. The only conclusion is that they wanted us to be divided.

The saddest thing is Star Wars can still be saved. It’s literally so easy. All Disney had to do is fire all their people at Lucasfilm, including Kathleen Kennedy, decanonize the sequel trilogy, & focus on Luke Skywalker and the Legacy characters. Just replace the staff with fans who actually know Star Wars. It’s inexcusable that they hire people who don’t know anything about it to write it. Disney should stop making random characters important for the sake of diversity and focus more on the storytelling. The fact that Kathleen Kennedy killed those Legacy characters really shows how respectful she was to George Lucas after he made her CEO. She even refuses to accept responsibility, calls fans who don’t like her Star Wars misogynists, and says she won’t retire until she finally gets a win. Even worse is the fact that Bob Iger, who bought Star Wars in the first place, isn’t doing anything to stop her or fix it.

It’s a tax write off folks. The more it tanks, the more Lucasfilm can declare losses and save on corporate taxes from profits. Disney is in the princess business. Rey is their princess in space. Think about it. They sank over 650-700 million dollars into the production of TROS only to make back 1 billion. Now take that 300 million (which in the end turned out to be much more) and sink it into the Acolyte (which tanked) et voilà! Losses to offset to the bigger picture. That’s business!

I see it working if Luke and Yoda's force ghosts are aiding Rey in her teachings. I do think we should have had more time with Grand Master Luke. Hell I wanted to see Kylo's training and how he turned. The fear that grows slowly within Luke and him not really knowing how to cope with it leading to his foolish decision. With no training at all, she was already Jedi Knight Level in TFA. With a few swings on a rock on Ach-to, she's now Jedi Master Level, as seen at the end of the movie with the mountain lifting bullshit. In TROS, just a Padawan, she's God-Level, defeating a resurrected and overpowered Palpatine on her own. She is already what Anakin failed to be (The Chosen One to end the Sith) and yeah of course now she's gonna be what Luke was failed to be (symbole of hope and founder of the new Jedi Order) She's so perfect and is everything at once that every other characters seems weaks or unfulfilled versions of her. Star Wars cannon ended at The Return of the Jedi..... I can accept Rogue one as canon since the respected canon in that movie, all else (even Mandolorian) is not Star Wars to me, nothing disney has made (save Rogue One) is Star Wars.
