I can't wait for the RP next week, it's kitted with slower 24-105 and I have a 35mm 1.8 already (499 CAD on sale!). Will test out the slow lens and maybe keep that and complete with 85 1.8 EF/85 f2 or upgrade to f4... decisions decisions. Then got rid of most EF-M lenses and keeping just kit and 22mm f2 pancake for travels. BTW great content, short and sweet, lots of samples - settings would be nice in some cases

Thank you very much for your answer. Finally, I was able to do some portrait tests myself with these two Canon RF 50mm and EF 40mm lenses and I could see a slight difference in favor of the RF 50mm. In fact I find that the images taken with the EF 40mm are flatter, then which are more modeled with the RF 50mm ... My choice is made, it will be the RF 50mm f1.8 to equip my Canon RP ! Thank you again for all your answers. Best regards, Philgood ...

I love my RF 50mm 1.8 and since Canon‘s L-version of the 35mm seems so far away, I finally pulled the trigger on the RF 35mm 1.8 too. Can’t go wrong with it tbh. For most of my talking head shots, I tend to use 35mm for my A cam (R6) and 85mm for my B cam (R) and since my R has a 4K crop, it actually turns the RF 50mm into a portrait lens, which is very practical.
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 жыл бұрын
That does make for a good combo. I don't shoot much video with it anymore, but I like the 35mm on the RP for that reason too - good AF in 1080 at 35mm or, if I don't need lock on AF, I can utilize that 4k crop with it for more reach.

Coming from your 50mm RF video, so no shame bell for me 🔔 😆😂 Great comparison 👍 Loving the RF 24-105 and since I have the 50mm EF with adapter, I’m set for now. Just need more practise 😇

Solid combo! Unless you needed a smaller form factor or the macro, you can do a ton already with the combo you have that cover these focal lengths.

When you said go with the 24-105, you are talking about the STM ($399) or the USM ($1,099)?
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, the one I referenced was the USM L, but I'm actually renting and working on some videos for the STM this week! So far, the two seem to be closer than I expected in terms of image quality. The big things you're paying for are the L build, and the amount of light at the 105mm end. If you don't need those things, for instance mostly shooting outside as a travel lens in good weather, you can save a lot of money with the STM and it's nice and light to pair with the RP.

Would using the 35 with the 1.6 crop on ff cameras be suggested to get the 50mm range on a budget?
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, you could enable "movie cropping" and use that for video instead of also getting the 50mm. I believe the resolution will be slightly lower. If you are video first, I think the 35mm makes a lot of sense. I haven't tried the new 24mm as it was just announced, but similar thing there. If you prefer that wide 24mm for photos, you'll be able to punch into about 35ish using the movie cropping.

Hello and thank you for this video. So in your opinion which RF 50mm or RF 35mm IS Macro is better on an RP gun ? Which one has the best rendering ? Thank you for your answers. Sincerely, Philgood ...
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 2 жыл бұрын
I think they are fairly similar - if you're interested in shooting landscape and won't be taking as many portraits, the 35 is more versatile. Allows some longer shutter speeds if you plan to practice some astro as well.
@PHILGOODOK1
@PHILGOODOK1 2 жыл бұрын
@@DanYosua Hello and thank you for your response. Indeed the rf 35 will be more versatile, but it will be less compact and heavier than the rf 50 which weighs only 160 grams. The choice is not easy. I do more landscape and street photography (I like to take photos in covered markets in Asia), but don't do Astro photography and rarely Macro. Or, I will start by taking the rf 50 (which is not very expensive) for my Canon RP, and later I will take the rf 35 ... Sincerely, Philgood ...

@@DanYosua Thank you for your reply. I did some tests this afternoon with my Canon RP + RF-Ef adapter ring and I used my 40 mm f 2.8 stm as well as my 35 f2 is usm. And, I confirm that even with my Ef lenses, for Portraits in Jpeg it smoothes faces a lot! Is there some other way or setting of the device to prevent it from getting too smooth ? On the other hand of course I did not have this problem on the RAW, but here the RAW of my RP I find them less beautiful than what I had with my 6D Mark II, it's not cool ! ...

@@PHILGOODOK1 hmmm, not sure that it applies any smoothing. I would double check to make sure your jpegs are are in the most neutral picture mode. Otherwise I'm not sure what might be causing that

@@DanYosua Thank you for your reply. Yes I want you to check if there is a smoothing to apply by the RP canon, in any case I see it on my Jpeg photos as soon as I zoom in the image on my computer. Thankyou for the vedio, I am beginner had my eos rp with 24-105 stm f4-7, i want to sell my kit and get 35mm will RF35 mm f1.8 be right choice for me ? I love shooting both portrait and landscapes. Or Or keep 24-105 and go for 50mm
@DanYosua
@DanYosua 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! If you don't mind having two lenses, I would say keep the kit for now and add the 50mm. For a few reasons... There are probably still going to be plenty of instances where you want that 24mm for landscape shooting and having that zoom range will give you more time to see which other focal lengths you like as you progress. Second, I find the 50mm to be nicer for people. Personal preference I suppose, but you'll be able to stand a bit more comfortably away and can blur your backgrounds a bit better. It will also be super compact on the RP. And then finally I think that's the most "undoable" decision. If you trade the kit for the 35mm and find you don't love being constrained to one prime... that won't be ideal. If you get the 50mm and think it's too tight, you still have the option to go for the 35mm if you consolidate.

Hello! I have Canon EOS R10 kit with RF-S 18-45 mm f/4,5-6,3 IS STM lens. Now i want to buy lens/lenses with better aperture. I want to take pictures of landscapes, portraits, macro, nature(forest..), street and also pictures with low light and sometimes videos. My all bugdet for lens/lenses is +- 600$. 1. option is sell my kit lens and buy CANON RF 35MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM as a universal lens 2. option is sell my kit lens and buy CANON RF 16MM F2.8 STM or CANON RF 28MM F2.8 STM and Canon RF 50 mm f/1,8 STM I'm leaning towards buying CANON RF 35MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM and later maybe CANON RF 16MM F2.8 STM. Is it good choice? :) Thanks for the advice!

You beat me to some videos I have planned around these types of questions! I haven't used it myself, and I know the build isn't the highest quality, but I would probably keep the 18-45 for now, unless you really hate it. For a few reasons - the 18mm end of that is typically pretty popular for landscape/street where you might be stopping down to f8 anyway. And it'll give you the option to keep IS if shooting video with that in bright conditions. 16mm on the R10 is a tad wider, but still not wide enough to give you that ultra wide landscape option. I would expect canon comes out with something as wide as an RF-S ~10mm that you might look at, so I would personally pause on the 16mm for the moment🤞 Adding the 35mm macro is probably your best bet because it's bright, keeps IS, lets you dabble in the half macro, will be a nice portrait length, and a good all arounder on the R10 and beyond if you upgrade later. I've barely use the 28mm pancake, I've only had it a week, but unless you want to go SUPER compact, you'll lose IS and having something that opens all the way to f1.8 might be better to experiment with. That lens will almost certainly drop in price to $249 in the future as well (like the 16mm).

like your videos, I like the fact that they are short, to the point, instead of every video being 10min+, even if person doesn't have anything more to add. keep up the good work regarding the focal length, i am currently more 50mm or 85mm kind of guy :)

No shame in moving stuff you truly aren’t using, or aren’t using enough. I’m still trying to figure out what L prime to get long term. Probably between the 35, 50… maybe a 24. But no rush for me at the moment to do so

I tend to use the 50 as a small and light option, as opposed to bringing the 50 for the 50mm look. So it’s one of my goals to be more intentional with it
