In the end you mentioned Eucharist, Ebony Tears and some other band, which I heard as Sauron, but I didn't find an MDM band with such name. Can you please specify which one you meant? I'm an MDM enthusiast searching for classic bands that I missed.

I remember my impression from 90'ies: The Red... sounded really interesting, fresh, nothing like I've ever heard. A follow-up With Fear... was building up on the first album, even more complex, crazy structured, excellent sound. Very impressive, almost revolutionary stuff. now we can only guess where it would went if they wouldn't turn the other direction. I do agree that Slaughter of the Soul is a good album - really catchy emotionally. They blended themselves with pop, no wonder it became popular. But it is very different from the early stuff and musically much less interesting. Anyway, the main expressions stayed - a scream of a suffering, hopeless soul, that's what At The Gates for me are about. Thanks for an interesting podcast. Would appreciate to hear what you have to say about Sabbat, especially their legendary album Dreamweaver.

The Red in the Sky is Ours is the best thing they ever released imo. Am I a poser if first heard them on a Tony Hawk game 🤔

Tbf, while the 3rd album is more conventional and less weird, it's still more complex and not as dumbed down as the 4rd one. Even the Jester Race is clearly superior to their 4th one when it comes to the complexity (and frankly even the quality), the dumbed down newer jumpycastle core In Flames, well let's not talk about that one.
