It's almost always better to be the defender. So long as Russians continue to attack, Ukraine will be able to inflict significantly heavier losses on them than they receive, making future attacks of their own easier. So it's not automatically a bad thing to temporarily cede some territory if there are stronger defensive positions behind that the Russians are willing to throw themselves into. Regardless, the Ukrainians are an inspiration to us all.

First off, it's not a mistake. The Ukrainian high command knows how valuable allowing an enemy to create a salient is. Allowing opposing forces into a controlled salient is an incredibly important strategic strategy. Ukraine made the mistake of pushing troops into a salient in 2014 and it cost them dearly, they have learned from that mistake and are now using that lesson to punish the Russian forces that are now making that same mistake.

Simply by slowing aid. The Influence of the USA is waining and ultimately the west wants peace for economic and world food shortage reasons. So while the west thinks it can effect regime change via Ukraine victory it will continue. However as soon as it looks like they can't. Then Ukraine will be dropped like a hot rock in favour of western business profits and lower energy prices. Ukraine has about 6 to 9 months left before Rest of EU etc get really tired. As I said in earlier comments: I expect the tug-of-war to continue near the Kreminna/P66 area. That particular area seems to be a favourite area for Russians to send attack waves with large numbers of conscripts towards. In the long term those Russian forces really won't achieve anything as long as Ukrainian forces remain aware of this and keep plenty of units in the backline. I personally wouldn't even bother calling this a loss of progress for Ukraine, because it's very difficult to ceate adequate defenses in extremely recently taken areas and have it be adequately covered by backline units (think also regarding logistics and artillery support). In general Ukraine can keep doing what they have been doing and just wait until Russians can no longer spam continuous waves of infantry at Ukrainian forces, but if I have to be a backseat driver: a large scale offensive in the area is unlikely to be very fruitful because it's unlikely that a very large number of Russian forces is caught out of position and surrounded -- and thus you would at best just take swathes of areas without significantly decreasing Russian presence while broading your frontline (by punching straight through in one fixed area, the frontline will grow in many Km on the sides). Despite Russians having a very hard time to maintain their lines in that area of the Luhansk frontline, I'd say it's also the least important area to attack (especially since between Donetsk and Luhansk they have prepared extra defense lines for later use). I'd rather go on the defensive, let Russians throw their human waves into the meat grinder to efficiently reduce their numbers, while sending more units towards Zaporizhzhia to make a massive push on the coastal area (which is going to be a critical blow for Russia). That said, Russia is f***ed anyway, it's just a matter of time until one of their frontlines breaks again.

Reinforcement is easy because Belgorod is on of Russia main mustering points. Since the pullback from Kiev, Russia's basic strategy is to complete the conquest of Donetsk and Luhansk, and then push for a cease fire. Kiev basic strategy is to push from the flanks. Evryone things they should try a march to the sea in Zaporyhzia, but they don't have enough armor or airsupport. Pushing at Luhansk makes sense.

There is not enough information in this report to determine the tactical preparedness of Ukrainian positions. What we do know is the Russians discovered and exploited a weak point in the line with overwhelming man power.
