Nes Collector and Pi-head here. Playing old Nes/FC games on a proper console is the pinnacle of enjoying the hobby vs emulation. The NT preserves the ritual of the NES, and provides intrinsic value of ownership, and gaming purity to your collection. I really want one, but I'm settling for an AVS. If one comes around cheap enough, I'll score one. Great video. FYI you need Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti, Downtown Special, Crisis Force, and Recca Summer Carnival 92 in your collection.

I remember when Analogue Nt made the Neo Geo AES system covered completely in a wooden shell, instead of plastic. They make cool stuff, but they're definitely catered towards collectors with deep pockets. (which ain't me...lol)

One great thing that I immediately noticed over the AVS is that you don't have to exit the game to access the menu to change options. Nice to know that light guns aren't forgotten either.

When you play through Double Dragon 3, get in the habit of moving diagonally instead of in straight horizontal lines. If you move in straight horizontal lines, you get your ass kicked. Moving diagonally and vertically means the enemies have to walk up/down to you to attack and gives you an opening. Also, when you get Chin use him for trash enemies. His regular punches take out trash quick, and when you use his claws it takes out bosses really quick.

No problem man. DD3 is one of my favorite games on the NES, and ever since it came out people have shit on it relentlessly. Anything I can do to give it some of the credit it deserves. If you need any help with the bosses or anything else really, get with me. I beat the game dozens of times and I pretty much know it backwards and forwards.

TheRosswise dude, why DD2 is far superior in literally every way imaginable
@TheRosswise

DD3 has multiple characters that each play differently, more stage and enemy variety, less annoying platforming elements and a more satisfying end boss fight. I played both DD2 and DD3 and beaten each multiple times, and I just prefer DD3.

This is way outta my price range as well. It's really cool that one of your patreon supporters let you review it though. I'm happy with my retrousb avs. The jail break thing is cool, and apparently it's going to support more 8bit systems in the future.

So, what's up with the graphical anomalies on Double Dragon II in this vid? I see play tests on that title on an Analouge that don't have the odd duplication of the level graphics on the top/bottom of the screen. Is that from bad cropping settings in system or the capture card used in this vid?

Shawn, you forgot to mention one of the best things about this neat system. You can almost totally make the artifacts dissapear when scrolling to the right, left, up or down (example: the green artifacts at the right side of your screen in Mario Bros 3 will dissapear). You need to go to settings, cropping sides and make the sides another value. Your games will look 10x better. This would be THE REASON for me to buy it.

Honestly, for a diehard NES fan $500 starts placing you close to the range for a brand new original NES. However, for the Diehard NES fan....this thing is like an NES on a whole bunch of steroids. One heck of a package. If a SNES version hits the market, I would really have to restrain myself from picking one up. Great vid!

Is the Analogue Nt better then the AVS USB other then one plays in 1080p and the other plays at 720p which is probably pointless. How well does it play the EVERDRIVE-N8. I want more information about that jailbrake thing your talking about. Can you put the whole collection on the sd card???

I wonder... what are the major contributors to success for an emulation or recreation system? And what system would be most in demand, now that NES is probably covered the best it could be? What system would you like to see recreated personally?
@RGT85
@RGT85 7 жыл бұрын
N64 is actually the most in demand I'd say, simply because of how foggy and muddy the graphics were at default. And I'd love an "HD" N64 clone :)
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 7 жыл бұрын
I have a vague impression that a honest, cycle exact N64 may very well be very close to impossible to recreate. It might not seem like it, but its complexity is an order of magnitude higher than anything before it. The main processor alone is like well over a million transistors, while playstation is less than 150000, exotic memory, and a second processor of again similar complexity, that if not emulated fully will break some games, like Golden Eye. Then again, N64 is also so slow, that getting it exact may not at all be the goal, and getting games to play can be done with some hacks. I'll try to think of something, but ultimately this would be a project that I'd lack resources to really implement. Too recent, too complex.

Ignoring price is tough though. Is it "better" than the AVS? In terms of graphical and audio adjustments you can make, for sure. It has way more options in those departments, whether they are worthwhile or not, than the AVS. The Nt also is 1080p, AVS is 720p

For me, playing games on the Nt Mini is a better experience than on the AVS thanks to a couple of small things. One, it's top loading. It's so much easier to switch out carts on a toploader. There is a lot of wiggle room on the Nt Mini however, so if you accidentally bump your system, you may reset your game. Two, the 8bitdo receiver is powered even if the system is turned off. This means when I'm switching games or leaving the system off for a long period, my 8bitdo controller doesn't lose it's bluetooth connection. Maybe it was user error on my end, but I constantly had to re-establish my bluetooth connection using the AVS, even when I just switched out carts. All I really want now from the Nt Mini are the Game Genie codes built in like they are on the AVS. Someone make that happen.

I think it would be better if they ditched the Famicon port, and added SNES. Now, I know the console would have to be bigger, as the Famicon and NES work on the same board, but still, I rather have an NES and SNES slot, instead of NES and Famicon. If you wanted to play Famicon, you could just buy an adapter. But whatever. Cool system, but still too much for me.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 7 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't need to be physically bigger. The console core is an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), and while a higher capacity FPGA needs to be chosen for SNES than for NES/Famicom, a simple hidden end switch in the sockets could switch the firmware IC or address line that the system boots from. FPGA is essentially a RAM-like device where each cell's stored data determines where it takes two signals from, and what logic function to apply, so it acts like a huge breadboard of millions of simple logic chips, but the wires are determined by software. You can simulate any sufficiently slow and sufficiently simple digital circuit with it, and basically all 16-bit consoles are all within realm of possibility, but as opposed to emulators running on general purpose processors, it can be done exactly with the same timings as the original hardware, no latency, potentially absolutely exact. As opposed to general purpose processors that are predominantly sequential in execution model, the FPGA can also represent fully parallel hardware units and behaviours, and the signal latency from one end of the FPGA to another is very comparable with switching speeds of transistors in older processors, making them so suitable for classic hardware recreation. Since an FPGA doesn't have internal permanent storage, it's loaded up with the wiring diagram of sorts, the program, by an external microcontroller or a special-purpose flash ROM IC on powerup, and that's when you can choose to give it a different program to have it simulate different hardware. But development of FPGA software is a very difficult and slow process, much slower than developing an emulator for a general purpose processor, and there aren't many console recreations written for FPGAs that you can just port, so i guess they just had to release what they already had rather than keep working on it with no money rolling in for another year. It's possible that they could provide a SNES adapter (only a handful of simple components) and firmware upgrade to SNES later.
@bfish89ryuhayabusa
@bfish89ryuhayabusa 7 жыл бұрын
Siana Gearz Further, since the NES has the most pins of any Nintendo cartridge, one could use a pin converter that also contains a microcontroller that tells the FPGA to use a different system architecture, and effectively run all Nintendo cartridges through a single slot.

I don't understand the demand for the NES Mini. If you want a cheap device that can play NES games, then get a Raspberry Pi. If you want a more authentic device, (for example, sound emulation is noticeably off on the NES Mini) then get an original NES off eBay. The cool thing about the AVS is that it can be used for either; emulation is 100% accurate (outside any visual enhancements, if you choose to use them) and you can play old NES cartridges on it, but can still output in HD. $500 is a tough sell though.

One more game I think I forgot to mention in my last comment actually 2 this first one in North America we got a game called Mappyland but there was a Famicom game that was just called Mappy and this other one may have made it to North America but I'm not sure it was called Circus Charlie by Konami not sure who made Mappy and Mappyland though oh and a third game which also may or may not have made an appearance in North America was another Konami game called Road Fighter and this other game that I am like 99% sure never made a North American appearance was a game called Pooyan but it just so happens that for that Magic Jewelry game I told you about in the previous comment and for Pooyan and for Circus Charlie there are iPhone game apps for them I think there I there is one for Road Fighter as well but I am not 100% sure on that one there is even an iPhone game app for a game which again may or may not have made it to North America called Yie Ar Kung-Fu these game apps could be available on Android but I personally am an iPhone IOS user so I'm not sure if they are or not

What actually makes this system $500 besides how heavy it is? Can you plug it into a crt and play light gun games? What is the compatibility percentage vs a clone like the Super Retro Trio? Now I know the trio has problems playing Castlevania 3 but is close to 100 percent compatibility.

This is a hardware clone, and it supports most everything. Not sure if it's exactly 100%. It can be hooked into a crt, but I'm not sure about light gun support.

Hi RGT 85.. Congrats for your NES game... it's a nice hack... responding to your question about good Famicom games... I would recommend you to check out Game Dave's KZbin series called "Famicorner".. you will get to see very good gems on the Famicom that are actually language friendly... meaning... they don't require you to know japanese to play them... you might find a couple of games there that are actually worth buying... Thanks for all the work you do... we enjoy it a lot... hope your channel keeps growing... Regards...

This is an awesome product but the price is a lot to ask for. I'd rather get the AVS for the price but if I had $500 to spend I'd get the NT- looks so fuckin sexy and the wireless gamepads a great addition

What exactly does this system do better over a system like the Retro AVS? I am not seeing why this system costs $500.

Many thing like actually you can use zapper/rob And now even play Roms From sd card etc etc Avs is only 720 as nt is 1080 etc etc
@PSNGormond
@PSNGormond 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's worth pointing out that 1080 scales better on 1080/4k TVs. Also you can install an unofficial firmware on this (made by the creator of this) to play other 8 bit consoles simulated on the FPGA.

Awesome review Shawn! I was hoping the 'mini' would be somewhat cheaper...nope! lol. I was shocked to see that Analogue got rid of their CMVS line. I was hoping to pick one up at some point with my tax return money :-/ They also got rid of the regular NT.

Can anyone speculate on whether or not the Analogue NT Mini is a good investment for future resale purposes? The price is ridiculously high, but I might actually consider buying one if I knew I could get my money back out of it in the future. Not to make a profit, but just to have it for a while and still be able to sell it without taking a big loss if ever something better comes along.

ScoobTube I'm going to say no. All this will do is drive FPGA based clones down in price. When someone comes to market with something similar for less than this that does the same thing, it will just ignite a price war and a market flood. Stay far away if you're looking for good resale.

+DaneSaysStuff Thanks for the reply. I'm inclined to believe these things will hold their value, due to their limited supply and the increasing value of NES consoles on the secondhand market. I know clones are being made, but none have the build quality of this thing. Of course I could be wrong.

As good as the Analog Nt look or how many advance features it had, paying $500 for an Famciom/NES is just wrong. You can pretty much buy an original NES, a RetroUSB AVS, a Raspberry Pi, and a NES Mini altogether for cheaper than the Analog Nt.
