Disagree. Although I do agree that this company is done. I never bought any of these for the games themselves. I bought them for the nostalgic vibe they give. I've had all the games in that mvc collection for many years across different consoles and emulated on pc. I can even play online using fightcade. That collection is worthless to me but having a cabinet is neat.

I believe I’m their core demographic. Dads in their 40’s who are in the prime of their career with major nostalgia for these games and disposable income. Then came COVID and those of us WFH with the time and the desire for something new started filling our homes with these toys. From there, they continued feeding the beast by regurgitating these into legacy cabs with small incremental updates which kept the business booming. Eventually the nostalgia wore off, the community stopped getting baited into buying the same product over and over again, no new licenses (Conta, SmashTV, SF3, Alpha etc.) and we went back to the office. From there these things started collecting dust and weren’t worth the space they were occupying. In the end, the product and business model were too niche and their rapid growth was a direct result of timing and circumstance. Casual families and most importantly KIDS have zero nostalgia for these and therein lies your problem. I know this because I have kids here all the time and they couldn’t care less about my beautiful arcade collection. Factor in inflation, competition ie. mult-cades etc., disappointing product launches (MVC2 Online anyone?) coupled with the toxic community and you have the predictable downfall of A1U.

It's cool to mod your Arcade1up, but here's the cons: It gets annoying to keep updating your PC software and securities every single day. If you don't update, your PC will run slow. You don't have to do it on the Pi and Odroid boards. Also, you have shut down your PC properly. If you don't, it'll corrupt your files. It's not like Arcade1up when you can safely shutdown by turning the on/off power switch. Worst of all, there's too much wirings that to have to removed the control deck bottom cover, if adding additional buttons. If you're not tech savvy who can solder wires and all, don't mod it.

@@redstratus97 I agree it's a great center piece. I got one for this reason as I wanted to have people back in my life as post covid I am done being a hermit. I also built some smaller and more portable machines as I find them to be a great party trick. (I modded a 2 player MSH countercade and made a bartop 17 machine.) I bought my modded Rampage machine and the counter cade(I had it hooked to a TV on the table, so it rans off both screens with two extra wired controllers so four players could play both.) to my nephews birthday party. The kids loved, as they were cheering when they beat Rocksteady and Bebop in the TMNT arcade game. They went wild again when they finnally took down Shredder, as they were experincing this all for the first the way we did as kids.(just without me charging them quarters hehe.) My sister in law was so happy as the kids stayed out of the house, between the games and the bouncy house. Her clean up went much smoother. I bought the goods as I wanted my nephew to be a hero to his friends, and it worked.

The other issue Arcade1up has is that many of their core customers ran out of floor space to put cabinets. I passed on several cabs for lack of floor space rather than complete lack of interest.
@MichaelMartin-qe5ye3 ай бұрын
The prices were going up, and the number of games on the units were decreasing. I was interested in Golden Tee, Golden Axe, and the Capcom cabs - but the prices never went down. If they could put every game they've ever licensed onto one cab that might sell at this point. Edit: I was also interested in the infinity gameboard, but they never figured out a way to make it feasible for numerous players at home except the honor system.

These seemed cool and stuff but I think the issue for most people is that even if they had the money to buy it, the space to actually have it around would make people think twice about buying it. Most people either have an apartment or a small house with a family. The actual market for people that could both buy AND have the space available isn't big. RIP though.

John D is the one who ratted out the SNK MVSX being easy to mod, which ended up killing HyloX.
@AldoAraujo853 ай бұрын
No one liked John D as a person, but he certainly knew how to market the brand and acquire licenses. Once he left, the brand completely lost any and all momentum they had. This recent Frankensteined Casinocade atrocity is the final nail in the coffin. That said, when they came out, they covered an itch that many couldn't resist, myself included. I was given the MKII cab by a friend, and then later I bought the MvC1 cab, which I modded with Sanwa sticks and IL buttons. Yet, products like the upcoming Unico Nova Blast give me hope....hope that I may be able to get an "all in one" cabinet solution. Just waiting to see this thing finally come out and what reviews day about the performance.

First gen MSRP (non light up marquee, no replica coin door, crap monitors) in 2018 were $300-400, current gen deluxe cabs are normally $500 but typically include 10+ games each vs 2-4. Inflation since 2018 when these launched is around 25%... so most of the increase in MSRP scales with inflation ($400 in 2018 = $500 today) but you are getting better features (light up marquees, replica coin doors), more games and larger cab without needing to buy a separate riser. I'd argue in most cases that the new cabs are a better product than they were 6 years ago at a similar or even better value proposition.

The footboard is to keep it from tipping forward. I wonder if they could inject more excitement into their products by using a more open architecture for their pcbs. Instead of a one use, custom pcb for every cabinet, use a universal pcb like an android box/raspi in every system, and just have different roms for every cabinet. The difference in cabinets would then come down to how many buttons and the types of controls, depending on the theme. It would save manufacturing overhead in the background, and give the users a more reliable and easier to upgrade experience.
@heyjustj3 ай бұрын
Best thing is modding them. If you can get one cheap on the used market you really can have a decent little arcade system. But think the number one issue with most multicade setups is that people download giant ROM packs and just load the system full of thousands of games… and then it’s a pain to find anything to play and then you gravitate to the single game cabinets instead. My best advice for a multicade cabinet is practice restraint, make a list of your top games you ACTUALLY want to play and ONLY put those on it. Makes it much better for others using it too. Otherwise it’s just a lot of scrolling in menus and going “oh wow! This has EVERYTHING! Neat!” And very little time playing games.

“I met some guys at the expo and they told me a rumor so I’m going to repeat it regardless if I know it’s true” Sounds like so many of your other videos. “Hey, I overheard someone say in the supermarket that the Switch 2 will play PlayStation 5 discs. Doesn’t sound right but I guess I’ll make a 10 minute video about it because it might be true”.

Having a room full of these would give anyone the nostalgia bug. The arcade cab art looks cool and were at a decent price. Especially if you had nothing to compare these to. Really great for young kids. OG players will gripe at controls, size and latency for some games. They should have given folks the ability customize the art and expand the games list on these.
@ThatGuysGuitars3 ай бұрын
The problem, is a lot of the big, main games people wanted; they’ve done. The prices have gone up, and the markets saturated. Why buy a new one, if you want get one used on Facebook for $100-$200? Most people get them, love it for 6 months, and get tired of them. Or the wife wants it moved out for another “live laugh love” sign 😂 They’re toys, decorations. And it’s gotten played out. People get bored. It’s becoming far more niche now, and the products aren’t getting any better

Some games are great on the arcade but those days are gone. Most home consoles can play some of these arcade games requiring that you purchase and download them. Buying those arcade 1 Ups will be too cost effective costing as much as a home console or more and needing the space at home for them....... Arcade were great back 70"s 80's and 90's but nowadays you have home consoles and portable devices that can play them.
