Tywin went to war out of necessity to defend himself, and very intelligently ended it at first opportunity, while Otto started a war completely unnecessarily, while he could have let Rhaenyra fail on her own. The true remedy was not appointing Otto Hightower as the Hand AGAIN after Lyonel Strong died. I don't know why everyone is hating Otto. It's not his fault. Rhaenyra is trying to frame him into inventing the rumours. It's 100% her fault. She went to the brothel's with Daemon. Otto told viserys nothing but the truth and viserys didn't wanted to believe it. He did his duty. The king has to know about the mistakes of his children. It's his duty as a father to educate his children. And viserys was exceptionally bad in this regard. Deep down he knew what Otto told him was the truth, because he exiled Daemon for it and reinstalled Otto as hand later on.

I actually think that if she had any relationship with her siblings, then the Dance would have been avoided. You can read this scene differently. It shows that she doesn't accept her siblings as part of her family at all. And Viserys after that talk with his daughter even tells Otto that Aegon is Otto's blood. Not his... Otto didn’t kill Prince Baelon (Viserys’s father). He died of appendicitis. Yes Otto did benefit from his death as he took his place as hand. But how was Otto supposed to know that he would have been elected to such a position. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t even in the council yet. The election of hand was entirely Jaehaerys I decision and he could have elected a million other nobles. There was no way Otto had the hindsight to know he would replace Baelon and so makes an assassination unnecessarily risky without any foreseen reward.

He doted on Aegon when he was a baby but then was pretty absent in their lives as well. I know in the books he’s kind to Helaena because she goes and visits him, but by then he’s pretty out of it. He’s kind and loves his family but he definitely wasn’t the best at making them feel that love

Although, Otto told Viserys the truth about Rhaenyra and Daemon, but even before this happened, from the moment Aegon was born, he has been trying to install him as heir. He wanted his grandson, whom he could puppet as king, so that he could gain more control over the kingdom. Rhaenyra was right that Otto was serving his own self interest. Otto installed an unfounded fear in Alicent, that Rhaenyra would kill her sons once she would become Queen simply to removed them as potentiel throne seekers. Now in season 2, Rhaenyra is out to kill them, but that is because they killed her son.

I think the greens should have been named heir. The male heir priority was the reaeon visyrs was king to begin with so to do the opposite invites further division on top of that her children are bastards and in their society cant legally inherit. In the books there isn’t proof they’re bastards though bc Velaryons aren’t black in the original story. Rhaenys had black hair so it was only a rumor in the realm. Targaryens could have dark hair. Either way, with them wedding the Velaryon/Targaryen girls, there was no risk of their children not being legitimate Targaryens irregardless. If the greens didn’t steal the crown, there would have been a solid heir succession. Aegon wasn’t fit to be king and Viserys knew it. Aegon didn’t even want it and had to be convinced.

Rhaenyra didn’t have a choice. She tried having children with Laenor but he couldn’t do it. She HAD to produce heirs as her duty. She was just unlucky they came out with dark hair but in the books Rhaenys had dark hair too, as did some other Targaryens. The rumor was bc Laenor was gay and ppl knew it. So Laenor as husband is really what mucked things up. He should have married her to Harwin Strong and betrothed their kids to Laena and Daemons daughters. Solid succession and alliance.

@@SunJade-vr6nj I see it may appear that way, but I believe you have misunderstood a couple of things (and I do apologise for the lengthy reply): First: Otto sent no one to “spy” on Daemon and Rhaenyra, he didn’t even know that they were going out. Obviously he had informants planted throughout the city, waiting to find something important to report to the hand. And once Otto found out, it was his duty to tell the King. Second: He didn’t lie. A lie is an intentional deception, and he reported the information he was given, by (if I’m not mistaken) numerous sources. Additionally, weather they actually had sexual intercourse or not is irrelevant, that is how they were seen. “Truth doesn’t matter Rhaenyra, only perception” to quote Viserys. The same damage was done as if they actually had gone through with it. The ONLY thing that mattered was how it looked.
