Wow, Rhett. That last 3rd really hit home for me. As someone who was on the debate team, I ended up believing that you always needed to be right. It's a big part of my personality as well. I've even had friends say that I try to be right too much. I completely agree that it's about ego, and I have an extremely difficult time handling it. I hate it when my pride get's bruised, because I consider that a failure for myself. If I can't defend my point completely, I'm hard on myself and research it until I find where I went wrong. It's why I'm always learning. Even though I do study more and more, it has only cemented my beliefs thus making my ego even bigger which has harmed several of my friendships. You've certainly given me a lot to think about and a great direction to do so. Thanks!

I never comment but just have to express my gratitude for these vulnerable conversations and the thrill I personally got from this full circle moment re: Rhett's discovery of ego/consciousness/identity and how it related to the competition conversation with Link. I fully understand what Rhett is saying (and just based on the verbiage I'm pretty sure I'm reading the same books?) and I am so encouraged to hear him apply it to himself. It's the peak of self-awareness and when you work on yourself that way you ARE contributing to a hopeful situation. This series of conversations has been fulfilling even just for me alone, so thank you Rhett for being so open and holding yourself accountable. And Link is classy as always. xo

I attended a conference recently with Cate Blanchett as the keynote speaker. She said, "If you need to be right, you cease to listen." That really resonated with me and made me reflect on past conversations where I was exactly in the mindspace that Rhett discusses. I'm trying to pause whenever I get that blinding, searing burst of egoism and really try to redirect those emotions into compassion towards the other person's experience and perspective. I think we need to have difficult conversations, but instead of arguing that your opinion is correct, we need to dissect why we hold those opinions.

I really love that Rhett touched on people connecting with their thoughts too much. That's a concept I was first introduced to somewhere on the Internet (don't remember where lol). There was this model, a series of concentric circles, on the outside were ones opinions on insignificant things and it got more and more personal until the center circle was someone's person: their sense of self. And the idea was that you don't want to link these circles too closely or a disagreement with one of those opinions (even the outer circle, the insignificant ones) can be perceived as a personal attack. It's a very interesting idea and I think it's important to think about and consider when someone disagrees with you.

Now that I’m married I can see my ego clearer than ever. What you said at the end Rhett has really made me think. My husband has told me that I like too much to be right. We actually both love to debate. We think we’re having a fun mental exercise without our opinions getting too personal. But then it goes on so long, gets out of hand, and I end up in tears. Why does this happen? I probably identify way too much with my ideas, even on inconsequential things, and just need to win. I need my husband to think I am smart. I think it’s something we both need to work on. I think we both have the ego, but it manifests in different ways. This has given me a lot to think about. Rhett and Link are the most likeable people and there friendship just makes me happy. I don't feel the same about anyone else I can't listen to podcasts except for them. I just can't explain it, I could be really depressed and Anxious I hear them talking and I mentally and physically smile. I love to just hear them talk to eachother or laugh together expecially when they talk about their past 🥰

I agree with you Rhett a lot of these problems can be resolved without politics getting involved but people don't want to communicate without an agenda and if it doesn't relate to what they believe in they have no interest in working together so we are screwed until the world realizes that we aren't as important as the Earth itself.

I’m glad we got back around to the competitive podcast. I think Rhett was really brave and vulnerable to call out his ego. It irked me in that episode when he would say “I just want you to agree with me!” and phrases of that nature. Ego is hard to tackle and the more we call ourselves out the better we are at managing it all the time. Sad you didn’t connect with aliens but I really resonated with the struggle to remain present and let go of expectations. That has been very hard for me to do over the past few years and I am trying very hard to let expectations go. Love you both🖤

"But not to overly identify with it to the point that your self worth and your self identity is based in some position that you have" Thank you you much saying this Rhett, took the words straight out of my mouth. I certainly agree with you and so many people need to hear this. Differences make connecting with people such a beautiful part of life and unfortunately there are so many who can not look past a difference in opinion, belief, thought etc. and it causes so much of a rift within humanity

I said something like this in the comments of the episode that Rhett referenced... The best way to feel selfworth isn't to get appreciation from people based on what's inside you, it's to make other lives better in ways that you keep private. Donate to a food pantry anonymously. You'll know that you've made lives better and that it had nothing to do with ego. You legit 100% helped others. Competition is the opposite of that. What's the point in proving worth if you're harming the worth of others?

Hey Rhett, a tip from a former Yellowstone Park employee here - there are a couple of AWESOME places in the park where icy cold mountain streams cross over underground thermal springs. Park Service employees often gather there in groups to swim and relax au naturel, under the stars. When its cold, you just move upstream, closer to the thermal spot (which gets boiling hot, so most people dont get too close to the dangerous heat), and when you want to cool off, you move downstream, which gets cooler the farther away you go. Magical. You can see all the stars, and its all rather misty from the steam, which freezes and gets sparkly on cold nights. You will remember it all your life.

“The challenge is finding a way to have an opinion/believe/conviction/to fight for something, but not to overly identify with it to the point that your self-worth/self-identity is based in some position you have, because at that moment you become more committed to your position than you do to the human race/greater good” - Rhett 1:26:58

What I love about politics is hearing from people who have different reference points than me. I like hearing arguments from all sides, and then looking into things and coming to my own conclusions based on that. I've learned so many things from people who have experienced different stuff in their life, and sometimes it has changed how I view the problem/solution. It's okay to have a difference in opinion, and it's great to talk to people about the differences - with the intention to listen/learn, not to convince them that they're wrong.

Rhett, I love that you visited my parts of the world. Alabama hills, Keough hot springs…are ‘nice’ (when no one else is around) BUT… the Artesians… even more magical, mythical. You can fish, you can swim, in beautiful mineral hot springs, you can just enjoy beautiful nature. Btw, I just had a nephew born a week ago and they named him Rhett! So happy for that. I am a GMM fan, or “Mythical beast” as you call it. But if you want a good example of nature in in Inyo County , let me know. I can give you the Deits. (I’m talking in “teen speak “ 😂).There are many beautiful spots, and🫣 hidden spots, in this valley that you only know about from “word to mouth”.
