I've literally just put together my first proper pedalboard, and I can testify to the good advice here. I would probably add: the planning stage might benefit from the odd diagram, so that you can see where you will be stomping and what the cabling requirements are. I benefitted from sitting in the place where I play to get an idea of what length the cables needed to be. Another thing to bear in mind is the implications of what you're plugging into. In particular, if an amp, does it have an effects loop? For the record, if anyone's interested, I ended up with a Pedaltrain Nano+, powered by an MXR iso brick mini, with a TC Electronic Flashback 2 and an EH Ocean's 11 in the effects loop of my Victory V30, and in the front end an Xotic BB preamp mid-boost version, with an old Morley wah possibly going after it (but not on the Nano+). Andertons have a good video on this with Danish Pete, and they have an excellent web page supporting it too.
@patmccrotch53733 жыл бұрын
I've played for over 20 years now and just now started messing with effects pedals. Every band I ever fronted, I've just used my amps on-board effects/overdrives, if there were any, and made out fine. But now that I'm spending a lot of time home, I've started exploring effects pedals. As I'm sure you're ALL aware... opening this can of worms has QUICKLY got out of hand. Not a bad thing, but yeah.. this is what kept me away from effects pedals and od's.. I know me, and know how I obsess over things like this haha. Being ocd.. putting together my first pedalboard has actually been therapeutic in a variety of ways, but also overwhelming at times. I thank you, Rhett, for your videos, because I've referenced so many other KZbin videos, along with yours, and feel like I've found the right overdrives, effects, pedalboard, cords, cables, ect. To build the board to my liking. Thanks for the help! And just a little tip for anyone who might need it, if you're playing in dark rooms, find one of the music stand or piano music sheet lights that can be powered by a USB. They mount perfectly onto a pedaltrain with a clip, have two brightness settings, and don't need batteries (although they do make ones that do for less cords) I'm sure I sound dumb because I'm sure people have better ways, but it works great for me and was really really cheap, under 6 bucks I believe. Anyways, lovin this! Hope to have a few discussions about other people's boards!

I charge my board with a giant phone battery with a usb to a daisy chain I got on Amazon. It's like 40,000 mah. I power like 8 pedals for weeks with that thing. Nice to see Rhett explaining the important stuff about pedalboards. Wish I knew this when I built my pedalboard! Didn't take into account the need of a good pedal switcher until I started rehearsing and jamming with bands again. A power source with isolated outputs like the Zuma is expensive, but it pays a LOT in the long run. If you run your guitar through 5 or more pedals, consider also a good buffer circuit in the audio chain, especially using long cables. Oh, and some digital pedals (like TC's) don't like to be daisy-chained. Last but not least, use quality guitar cables, they DO make a difference.

This is really excellent. I’m originally a sax player and now born again musician on guitar 🎸 as of a year and a half ago. For my first pedal I bought a ‘guitar lab’ which has dozens of effects, it’s programmable, has a tuner, basic looper, expression pedal, and rhythm machine-all for only $100. This is of course not really a substitute for having a populated pedal board, but it got me started. First actual pedal, a top of the line looper. It’s awesome. Then I bought a Roland Go Mixer. Next I’m thinking a great Blues pedal. Well, I play outside a lot, no wall plugs, you get the picture. Plus I have to plug and patch everything in each time. Answer: Pedal board. I gotta say though, when you got to power supply, I was thinking I’ll just ask the shop guy. But at least I’m not blind to the issue now, so thanks.

I just shared this video with a friend who is building his first pedal board. Great video! For a small(ish) pedal board, the Boss PSA-120S is pretty quiet. I gig with it and power five pedals with a daisychain cable. I don't think it's quiet enough to use for recording, but for someone on a budget building a basic gig board, You can't go wrong if your pedals don't draw more than 500 mA current. It filters out a surprising amount of noise. It's so affordable--about $33--you can carry a spare and still save $50+ over a power supply with isolated sockets.

But after seeing this, it confirms my suspicions that im gong to need a better power supply to suit the goal the board is trying to achieve. The steps you broke the process down into where really helpful, I had picked out the right pedals for the job but failed to realize I didn't have the proper power supply in mind to get the most use out of them. Thanks Rhett you just saved me at least 20 bucks on a wall wart that wouldn't cut it, now ill happily wait and save for the right tool for the job and avoid the frustration.

Great video! One thing to note is that if you already have the old Voodoo Lab PP2+, there are dip switches that allow you to switch between 9 and 12V, as well as voltage doubler, current doubler, and splitter cables available from Voodoo Lab for just a few bucks each. You can often share a 100mA tap between low-current pedals, and couple taps 5 & 6 to feed pedals that need up to 500mA. You can also couple two 9V taps to power a pedal requiring 18V, or use the dip switches and couple to achieve up to 24V. Xotic also makes a voltage doubler connector that goes between the power tap and the pedal (about $30). You can even use the courtesy outlet on the back for a wall wart that comes with a high current pedal, in a pinch. All of these options add up a little bit, but for some this will be a good option as a new power supply is definitely more expensive!

First off, great vid! I just wanted to say that the center negative that pedals run on is the exception in the electronics world; most 9v supplies (unless specifically designed for pedals) will be center positive, as that is the standard. Most wall-warts too, so pay special attention to this. Secondly, any center positive can be converted to center negative bu simply reversing the wires on a standard cable (cut, reverse, solder, heatshrink). The isolation thing is very important though, and i woul recommend any begginer in this marvelous field to simply stick to a good power supply made especially for this. Cheers!

I got a Metro 20 a few years ago and it's IMO the best size - If I can't fit what I need on there, I probably don't need it. It's enough for my compressor, Freqout, three/four dirt pedals (sometimes swap for phaser), a reverb, a chorus, tiny tuner, and then my Boss IR-200 for recording. My Whammy and DD-20 for delay are on the ground so that's kind-of cheating, but they're huge. But it does depend on WHAT pedals you want. If all of your pedals are BIG pedals, then you might want a bigger board. I tend to only use micro or "regular" Boss-sized enclosures. But I like that the size of the Metro limits what I'm able to put on there. And it makes it so one MXR Mini Iso Brick powers all my pedals (except for the big ones that get their own).

Feels great, the models satisfy. I know the joy of tubes, but damn, can't carry those well on a cargo bike and so heavy. Pedalboard, yeah, tempting. But with multiple pedals, multiple angles for noise and break in signal flow. A Helix is much simpler that way. Especially for travel.

Basically, compressors are dynamic pedals, which will even out your output signal, making it uniform, and in some cases, increasing sustain. Depending where you have it in the signal chain, each place will sound different. At the beginning, it will even out the volume and transience of the sound, and towards the end, it functions as a limiter, when set a certain way. It's all about personal preference where you have it in the chain.

I built my first pedalboard on a skateboard deck, it fits my tuner, 2 gain pedals, a chorus, 2 delays, and a reverb. I still gig with it now, even after switching out pedals and rebuilding it a couple times. It gets a lot of positive comments at house and basement shows too.

khaki cuffs not to mention it’s easy to roll from one side of the stage to the other. In fact, you and the other guitarist could share the rig, you just give it a little push when it’s his turn to use it.

I love the CIOKS power supply. It fits perfectly underneath the pedaltrain like it was designed to and can power almost everything you throw at it

in total defiance of Rhetts advice I have just ordered a great big board and a loop switcher so I can get all of my pedals on one board. Even ones that I would rarely use I want on there just so I have the option you never know when you might want to do something weird in the moment. I know it probably sounds really stupid and Rhett is an infinitely more experienced musician than me but that's just where I am at right now.

At this point, someone probably said it already but the Voodoolab power 2 plus offers 9 AND 12v outlets (via the dip switches underneath the power supply).

I got a bad case of the Volante's as well. Love the editing in this video. It's poignant too, my Novo 24 arrives tomorrow.

I was like that till it snapped in two . Then I went electric..! I don’t know if I need a pedal board or not . Or just an amp. I’m just trying to work it out..!

1 spot/daisy chain is okay unless you're powering digital pedals (which are the ones that sometimes introduce noise/hum), also I would recommend powering up to 5 to 6 analog pedals from it
@tjborekvideo2 жыл бұрын
Analog pedals also tend to require less current, which is a plus with a wall wart style power supply.

Used a cabinet door as my pedalboard for 10 years and finally got a pedaltrain. Does the same thing honestly but it just looks so much better

Great video Rhett, but you didn't get into the other stuff you mentioned. Like which cabling you use, and how/where to place particular pedals in the signal chain. Would love to hear more about that stuff too, then I feel like I could confidently build my own board. Cheers mate!

i'm beginning to order enough pedals to justify a power supply, after checking out i discovered that there are daisy chains less than 10% the price and was quite down about it. seems like i made the right choice after all... i really needed the reassurance, thank you.

This video is timely. Currently building a board after months of loose pedals on the floor, or still in the box. Already made a mistake on the power supply. Back to GC for a better unit.

Another great video Rhett! As usual awesome advice and That Strymon power supply is very nice. I WANT ONE 😛 The Voodoo Labs PP2+ has dip switches that up the current from 9 V DC to 12 V DC and an aux power out, both of which are features that enable the operation of pedals that have less than standard power requirements. Also you can get voltage doubler cables where 2 x 9 V DC sockets are chained together to power 1 x 18 V DC pedal. I currently power a HELIX LT, 2 Notes Torpedo Cab and an ISP Theta Preamp off the Aux Power out and an EVH Flanger using the voltage doubler method along with a bunch of other 9 V DC stuff off the single VL PP2+. However, not the tidiest option but certainly works great.

I was waiting for this to be mentioned! Power supplies are really expensive and if you happen to already have the PP2+, there are a lot of flexible options to make it work.

30 seconds of watching and the reasons for the horrible hum and noise emanating from my maiden set-up is revealed - power supply! Thanks, Rhett 👍

As far as order of pedals is concerned, I find that to be extremely subjective. While some effects definitely interact better in a certain order, placing them in different ways can lead to interactions that might not happen otherwise. I always just kinda experiment with order and just see what happens

I going to say what I've said on other board vids. Look at Caline P-1 pwr unit. Big pwr,cheap price and I used it for about a yr and no problems. 8 outlets I'm running 2 18v and 3 daisy chains out with no noise. Total of 16 pedals 1 20× 12 board. Noise free as long as I step on drive pedals and use the tuner to kill live sound!

(Sorry,is long) My plans for the future: Amp+Cabinet: Mesa JP2C (or any Mark series) with 1x12 mesa cabinet Now pedals (outside pedalboard/controlling manually): Two G1Xon,one for tuner and control the amount of input gain and the other to Whammy (down),Octave,Phaser,Swell,Eq,etc.... 1 Whammy 1 Wah In pedalboard and controlled by a switcher Drop Digitech Acoustic Sim Noise Supressor Tube Screamer Distortion And a Valeton GP200 outside pedalboard,but being controlled and in the FX Loop of the amp,just for the 5 Band Graph EQ,Compressor,Pitch Shiter (Kind of 12 strings sim),Chorus,Delay,Reverb So the signal goes: Guitar > 2 G1Xon > Whammy > Wah > *Input of the switcher* > pedalboard with all pedals in the switcher > JP2C with the channels controlled as well > Valeton in FX Loop > Cabinet The patches: Clean Channel: Acoustic > Valeton (EQ,Comp,Pitch,Chorus,Delay,Reverb) Clean Channel: Distortion > Valeton (EQ,Comp,Delay,Reverb) Crunch Channel: Noise Supressor > Tube Screamer > Valeton (Comp) Lead Channel: Noise Sup. > Tube Screamer > Valeton (Comp,Delay,Reverb) My problem is... I want a switcher that will be able to control all 3 channels,my pedals and the Valeton, with at least 8 banks so I can use the Drop in 2-8 banks, here in Brazil we have a switcher like this,with banks,four switchers for each bank,but there's no much info about it,idk how powerfull it is,if can control more than two channels,etc.... so,can anyone help me solve this problem? :v
