Hey Rhett! What an honor. This is so incredibly sweet and informative. My friend from Caroline Guitar directed me to this video and I’m so grateful! Thank you so much for the kind and comprehensive analysis- so grateful and happy to be a part of peoples’ open tuning discovery/journey 🖤… and thanks for sharing and amplifying how guitar music can be so emotive and healing! Rhett, thank you so much for introducing me to Yvette and Covet. I’ve been binging their stuff since pretty much the hour this video went up, and have found their sound hugely inspiring. Yvette, thanks for sharing your music with us all! You made a point in one interview I watched about how the “shred” culture around guitar is technically impressive, but not as rewarding musically without dynamics. I had to show that clip to my partner, who’s been listening to me say that for years, like “see, she gets it!” I’ll do my best to get to Covet’s next show in central Florida to support you guys, and I’m already saving up for my own slime green telman. Such a cool guitar.

Merci beaucoup Yvette. You have an amazing sound and I wish you all the best. BTW I have seen a piano player who picked up the guitar and amazed and amazing band. Dweezil Zappa had on Rachel Flowers to play keyboard (her instrument of choice) on Inca Roads and then do a guitar solo on Montana. It would by great if you could collaborate.

btw .... one of the "original masters" of alternate tunings was Joni Mitchell. She blew everybody's mind back in the day (my day) with dozens of alt tunings. There was this film clip from a movie where a bunch of people were at Mama Cass's house in Laurel Canyon .... David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Jackson Brown .... Clapton was there too, visiting. He was watching Joni play some stuff, and his jaw literally was in his lap. It was hilarious.

You nailed it with the modern young players and their approach. My 12 year-old son started a couple of years ago getting into Hendrix and all of the classic "guitar gods." Now he is learning this tuning and is a huge Yvette and Tim Henson fan. He and his generation have now nearly a hundred years of style to draw from and it's awesome to see how approaches have changed + the great music being made by artists like Yvette pushing the medium forward.

Alternate tunings is one of the greatest things about guitar. Opens up entirely new worlds. Using a capo on standard tuning alone does that. I wish I had a better grasp of the fretboard, especially with single strings tuned differently. like EADGAE or EADGBD but even that is hard cause you always have to keep that one string in mind that is detuned. it's a journey, i guess... but i do envy people who have nailed alternate tunings on guitar and just play most amazing things. from folk to prog and everything inbetween

I came up with a tuning a few years back which is F A C E G B (or every second key on a piano starting on F). Each group of three consecutive strings are alternating major and minor chords, F major, A minor, C major, E minor, plus they can be played four strings at a time, five strings at a time, or all 6 strings, and you get a number of extended chords, all just by barring. All six make like a Fmaj7/9/11 or something like that.
