It's not fire like that gold one...but it's still a great guitar. ..But it's cool factor is through the roof! My advice ian is find some right handed guitars which you can flip the strings upside down on & play left handed, like Hendrix & his right handed white strat, flipped upside down & strung upside down. Not every type make model etc will suit or be ergonomic enough to prove comfortable to still hold use & play but there certainly would be many makes models etc which you could flip / change the strings upside down & play left handed with little difficulty? Just a possible tip / advisory suggestion from a 51yr old 42 year guitar veteran, right handed by the way but my mate is cacky-handed so he finds great right handed guitars, flips the strings / sets intonation etc & manages ok without waxing furious about the dearth of left handed guitars available - try a righty, flip the strings, just a thought? Cheers peace & respect from Oz.

I was working remotely from home one week about 18 years ago and to break the monotony of my day behind my desk, I walked into my neighborhood GC just to kill time...and there tucked away in the used guitar section was the ugliest Gibson Les Paul Custom I had ever seen. Obviously someone's work horse but cosmetically beat to shit. It was a pancake body Norlin era custom probably about mid seventies no serial number cherry burst with the finish absolutely sanded off of the top. I took it home and plugged it into a Marshall JTM 60 and it screamed....it inspired me to play more and I couldn't put it down. Best sounding Les Paul I've ever had and I've had about 7 at this point. I stole it from GC as far as I was concerned 1K with case included. Changed my life as a musician and I still have it today.

I just recently purchased my dream guitar. I’m always very fond of boutique guitars, especially since I started watching you like 3 years ago. Issue is I never had the money to get one for myself. Took a really long process of saving up and looking for the perfect one for me. After I saved up enough money for a higher end guitar I went to my local shop here in Melbourne, Australia, I saw this German boutique brand called Maybach with it’s JM model. Oh mate, I fell in love when I tried the fat C shape neck, and the sound of the PAF pickups😭 money really spent well and it’s best purchase I made in 2021. I even came back to this video just to share this story😂

Well done. Here's my special guitar.. I may have to be cremated with it. I was 16 (1963) and had some paper route money to spend. I ended up in an Auction house. Nothing special. As I was leaving, I saw one of those cardoard triangular guitar boxes in a corner hiding behind some junk. Hey..an old guitar inside..a Gibson of some sort..but it was a mess. No strings, dust all over it, finish checked and worn off to bare wood in a few places. Big fret wear in the c and f positions. Oh well, I'll give it a shot and put in $125 bid, the minimum bid. Well I got it. It is a gold gibson es295 built around 1953 or 4. Original pickups, floating bridge.. I've played it at weddings and funerals, in a European dance band as rhythm and in a 70‘s rock band as lead. Played at home and in a large concert hall.. I had to have it restored after a horrible accident that is still hard for me to think about. She landed hard on her tail...nuff said The luthier took a real interest and did a super job. .. and it is just gorgeous..as good as new...same gold shade darkened with age, all the trim.. So that's my guitar story.

I just bought my own first acoustic and my biggest beginner tip apart from budget is: bring time with you and stay open to the entire learning experience. And don't bring people who interfere with your guitar-finding process. Choose supportive people. No amount of online research will give you the real-life connection with the instrument. If you meet musicians with more experience and you get to chat: ask them about their approach to get inspired. And I really loved the tip of you guys to just strum the guitar/ring the strings and listen to its basic sound before you add anything else.

Huge point: The better an electric guitar sounds unplugged, the easier it will be to bring that guitar to life when plugged in. Absolutely true. Jack Pearson (great Nashville sideman and one- time Allman Brothers member) will not buy a guitar that does not resonate well unplugged. In my own experience I've found that to definitely be the case. Next is how it feels to you when playing. It's like a pair of shoes. No matter how beautiful they are, how expensive, or what the brand name is, if they don't fit right you won't wear them because they aren't comfortable. And who wants that?
@TheNinnyfee

I wholeheartedly concur. I bought a used Dean Edge 6 because it was all I could afford at the time; I was stuck with that monstrosity for a decade before I could get enough money together to sell it and get a new one. It sounded great, but the scale was too long and body too big to be a good fit. Ibanez Soundgear/Gio basses have always been a good fit for me and they have a clear, loud tone unplugged, more so than the Dean.

Playing unplugged is influenced strongly by the age of the strings, which isn't mentioned here when talking side by side comparisons. If I found a guitar I loved in every other way than the unplugged sound, I'd ask the store to put fresh strings on it before making up my mind.

agree my guitars sound great unplugged so I know they are solid. When I try guitars at stores, I listen unplugged to the sound of the guitar and also how the neck feels in my hands. Are the frets well cut and not razor sharp so I don't slice open my fingers playing? Does the neck hurt my hands or feel nice?

My one major issue I had with any other guitar I had/have.tried out was that I couldn't get a wide enough variety of sounds out of one guitar. I was mainly looking for reliable and versatile guitar, preferably with 3 pickups, that I could throw into really as many performance situations as possible(I play a mix of Jazz, Funk, Rock). After looking for like 6 months, my friend told me to out Reverend Guitars and I went to Rudy's guitars(New York) to try a few and I was sold. However, it took another few weeks for me to find the exact pickup combination and body style of Reverend. I found that exact guitar (the Charger 390) sold online from one dealer. That Reverend is now what I play everyday without thinking twice.

I have a 1957 Les Paul Junior that is in immaculate condition, it is a blessing from GOD, as are all of my guitars but this one is something extra really special, it plays like butter with small vintage frets that make it play real smooth and it is very easy on your fingers. Gibson 1963 Custom Shop Reissue 335 block neck that plays and sounds like a dream, 63 Tele Custom Shop, 63 S.G. Custom Shop, 54 Custom Shop Les Paul P90 Goldtop, a James Tyler strat. It seems like there is no one guitar that covers everything, you need a single coil guitar, humbucker guitar, P90 guitar, and a couple of acoustic guitars to cover all of the bases.

Always find your videos so informative. I’m a 69 year old senior and played when I was a teenager in the 60’s . Then got drafted in 1971. About 6 years ago after all those years of not playing anymore I bought an entry level Squier Stratocaster. So now I still have it trying to get better. This is why I like your videos. To me they are so informative, guitars , amps pedal boards string size. It’s all there for me. And the trip to NYC Guitar shop. I was in them in the late 60’s. Great stuff. , great memoirs. Thanks Rhett !!!

I have tried quite many guitars. I have had musicians as my friend all my life. None of them (guitars) felt good. I have had cheap poor guitar since I was a kid 40 years ago. Everybody said it will not be playable never. I believed them. It stayed in closet, my four kids used it as a carpet, as a hammer and so on. One day I decided to put it order and fixed it a little. I thought it would nice memory. After I restored it and , pluged in, and it was like 'I'm home'!. That cheap little piece was perfect. I made bridge and pickup update, after that it is just what I always wanted to hear. I feel it playing in my body. Endless sustain. No pain, lightweight, it just is like part of me. I'm just wondering. The neck was torn of, it still is straight, not broken. Is there cement inside. Very light, low action. The guitar nobody ever wanted and they say it was horrible in 70-80'. It says 'Rocky' in the headstock. I have not found any similar.

My dream guitar is one I own. It's a Mexican tele. I had always wanted a strat from the first time I thought about playing guitar and I told my dad that I wanted a fender Strat. My dad, being the person that he is, only heard fender and went to his neighbor's house that recently switched to only acoustic guitars and asked if he had any fenders that he was selling. He had one tele left. He said to my dad "bring your boy around and we can talk about pricing". Later that day, my dad brought me to his house and he saw how much I enjoyed the guitar. He told my dad "let him have it, on me" and I literally freaked in excitement. Ever since that day, it's been my main guitar. I've played dozens of strats, lps, even a few American teles but nothing has held a stick to it

Back in 1983, I owned a '61 ('62?) Les Paul SG, that was supposedly owned by Tommy Bolin, back when he lived in Denver. It had been repaired multiple times, had a harmonica bridge put on it, and looked like it had been played hard and put up wet. I absolutely hated playing it. The neck drove me crazy, it was too skinny and yet, it did the neck dive like Greg Louganis. So, I took it to Dietze Music House, here in Lincoln, to trade. I was really into Talking Heads and Richard Thompson, so I was pretty sure I wanted a Strat. There was a bunch of late-CBS stuff, AND, a pair of the new Fullerton '57 and '62 reissues. Doug Fenton, the head of the Pro Shop, pulled them down for me. I played both. The '62 was a bit lighter and more resonant, and, to be honest, since it was a 'burst, it looked like David Byrne's or one of Robert Quine's. So, I asked Doug what kind of deal we could do (they were the most expensive Fenders in the shop), and Doug said he'd do a straight trade. Thirty-six years later, I can still pick up that Strat and, for some reason (maybe because it was my only guitar for almost twenty years), anything I play on it is easier to play and almost always sounds great. Skippy The Wonderbeast and I have had the longest relationship of my adult life, and every time I pick him up, I'm in love all over again.

I'm only a casual player, and sporadic, but I think I have my dream guitar. Back in the mid-90s, I bought a 'red burst' (probably the wrong term) Epiphone Les Paul. It was ok. Slimmer body than a usual LP, so lighter, but the main thing was I could afford it. It was OK, but something never felt right. About 5 years later I was house sharing with a guy who had the exact same guitar, but in tobacco burst (ish). I had a go on his. It was so much better than mine! These were the same model, the same year, same hardware, identical in every way except the colour. He was selling his as he wanted a half decent acoustic at the time. I said 'No- give it to me, Ill sell mine, and you can have the money'. Bless him, he said yes. I have had this guitar over 20 years and its always the one I go back to. Remember its an Epiphone. After all these years it has started to become genuinely relicked too, which makes it even better. The only thing I have done to it is put some Alnico 5 pups in it, Slash model one (Guess what I like playing!). This guitar is a beast. I have even bought a Gibson Les Paul myself only to be massively underwhelmed and went back to my Epi. I've no doubt there are a lot of expensive Gibsons out there that are much better than my Epi, but I think you would be hard pressed to tell in a blind test, unless you felt the headstock. I used to think I had to own a 'real' Gibson, but as I've grown older I realised that is just a name, its how it plays that's important. This guitar will be with me for life. There is a lot of guitar snobbery out there, and its really unfair on the (at the time) kids like me who can't afford a 'real' LP. Gibsons are generally massively overpriced anyway. I bought the cheapest Van Halen Wolfgang, just for a bit of fun- less than £400. Aside from the rubbish plastic knobs it too is a beast of a guitar. At that price I don't mind when it gets 'relicked' by me dropping it. Frankly I might do a big 'black n decker' job on it one day. I think the lesson here is you really do not have to spend a fortune to get the guitar of your dreams. In fact, I don't think we should encourage Gibson at their prices. No wonder they went broke, they are loads more money than most guitars. PRS take note!

It’s really funny because I’ve always found that I prefer to get to know an electric guitar acoustically first. I always get people who say “plug it in” But until I get that feel from it, I never give them a chance anymore. I do have to say though that once it does get the OK most guitars that I’ll plug-in from that point sound amazing and feel right!

Same kind of story for me. I play my brother's first electric guitar everyday, it's an SG chinese copy from the brand Vintage which is absolutely wonderful, and then I started purchasing other guitars. Here are the three most important ones : - A Fender Tele baja : I bought this guitar after trying out at least 6 or 7 different Telecasters, and the guitar and I just "clicked" right away. - A BMG Red Special : I bought this guitar off the internet through Thomann Musikhaus. Big mistake. Never played the guitar before and I was really disappointed in how it played, plus, the electrics started to break down very quickly. The finish is amazing though. - A Bacchus BLS59 : My first serious and big budget guitar... Played about 5 or 6 guitars that day, and tried the Bacchus BLS straight after putting down and actual Gibson LP Custom. A third of the price, and three times as good. Truly astonished by quality and the sound, I recommend you guys to check them out. Moral of the story : Never buy guitars off the internet !! Try as many as you want in a shop and support locals !
