Thanks for sharing! This was my third year attending and I feel like it's gotten better for me each year. I remember being pretty overwhelmed my first year and definitely made some stress-induced poorly thought out purchases! The past two years, we have stayed close by to minimize travel and also booked super early to avoid high prices. In addition to Indie and Cake, I attended A Woolen Affair this year and it was my favorite of the Friday events--it was small and intimate, at an orchard with a cider barn, and while there was shopping, there was equal space given to seating for gathering, eating and drinking, and knitting. Would highly recommend it! As for Sheep and Wool, we parked just before 9 and entered at opening when crowds weren't as large. Would also recommend bringing lunch and booking reservations for dinner in town well in advance. Sorry that you didn't have the best time but hope to see you at a future Rhinebeck weekend!

I enjoy your video about the event so much. Most of KZbinr show the hauls and shopping experience, but you show it with a different point of view. Of course for you as a “influencer” the meeting people must have been amazing, but I am glad you showed a more “regular people” aspect.

I always thought I’d love to go to NYS&W but first person accounts like yours have made me think twice. Thank you for your honesty. For me, it’d be a big undertaking, both financially and time wise and I’ve come to the conclusion that other events might be more my speed.

I’m not in the NE - I’m in NC and there is a very similar (but MUCH smaller scale) event here in March called Carolina Fiber Fest. You can get indie dyed yarn. Roving. Used equipment. Take courses on various things like spinning. It’s really neat. I love going every year. And the crowds aren’t horrible. (I really don’t like large crowds. I start to get anxious). It’s also indoors. So, no matter the weather it’s fine. 🎉 Hope that helps anyone if they’re in this area and looking for a similar experience without all the travel. 💜🧶

Hi, loved this video!!! I did want to say that many states in New England (and probably across the country) have their own sheep and wool festivals full of yarn and sheep and fleece! They also do equipment auctions and sheep herding demonstrations and all kinds of things. I have been to both New Hampshire’s and Vermont’s and they are both delightful and have a wide range of yarn available, and are both worth checking out from Boston! (I think there is also one in western Mass!)

Yes! Both Mass. Sheep and Wool in or near Cummington, and VT S&W in Tunbridge are wonderful, relaxing events in beautiful settings. Do check them out if you can.

I’ve been twice now on Saturday only and definitely recommend being there before or shortly after it opens. It is much easier to navigate the barns and buildings before lunchtime. I also did not have to wait for lunch either year but I did head over just before noon. I hate crowds but going early makes it super manageable!

Fello Bostonian here! We drove up Friday AM and did the same Friday events in opposite time slots. I loved indie! It was super chill and the vendors were definitely my taste. Cake was a cool event if you liked the vendors but it wasn’t really my thing and we left before our time slot was over. Ny sheep and wool was definitely overwhelming Saturday and I completely agree going both days is ideal. I feel like now that I know more of what to expect o could make a better plan for next time. Sunday was delightful. I was exhausted after that weekend but my extroverted husband cannot wait to go back 😂

Other designers also have Rhinebeck patterns, not just Andrea! I recall Thea Coleman in particular. Yes, it is overwhelming, and brown bag for sure. I went in 2023, before my foot surgeries, so my feet gave up before 5 pm. I agree about skipping the hand-dyer venues and concentrating travel $$ (hotel and meals) onRhinebeck itself. I’m so glad I went despite the crowds, but since it is 8+ hours from where I live in Maine, it won’t be a yearly pilgrimage. Sorry you missed Garthenor-yarn from Wales. It is amazing!

NYS&W is definitely something that gets better with practice! Saturday is the day you take it all in, and Sunday is really calm and a great day to make purchases. It’s nice to make a list of booths you want to visit in advance and then you spend less time feeling overwhelmed. We always get there early on Saturday then leave around 1:30 or 2:00 and have lunch in town. It’s much calmer and the food is better. On Sunday you get your cider donut when the lines are shorter. It really becomes much more enjoyable over the years!

I attended this year and last year on the Saturday and it def felt way busier this year. Last year the weather was pretty miserable and raining, but I luckily prepared rainboots in my car. Something to consider about planning for all kinds of weather because it can get quite muddy. I'm not sure if this is accurate, but the vendors had the same booth locations both years which helped me to bee-line to shop things on a list, but they also had a vendor list/map on their website at least a month ahead if the weekend event. Similar to you, my first time at Rhinebeck was totally about the vibes and seeing everyone's sweaters--I didn't buy much of anything and I missed all the fun events like the llama parade and the herding dogs. If you do go Sat and get there early, the booths aren't as busy ~9 and the food lines are much less busy before 11. I managed to try the apple cider donuts this year (didn't last year) and I fully understand the hype. It's worth it if you don't have to wait long. Otherwise I'm with you about packing food/snacks/water.

I went to Wisconsin sheep and wool festival in September. It sounds similar to NY but on a much smaller scale. My favorite thing is to buy yarn from local sheep farmers and the names of the actual sheep it comes from is on the label. So fun!

Really enjoyed listening to your first time Rhinebeck experience. Regarding the food, if you want to get lunch etc. you have to get in line before 11:30. We have one person in our group get in line around 11:15 to get lunch. Otherwise, forget it as you have learned. Also, the vendors have to much more than just handed yarn. The Merritt book store has lots of knitting and yarn and fiber related books to browse and book signeting by new books that just came out, which is super fun. Also, you can find project bags, jewelry, spinning stuff, felting things, farm made soap and hand lotion/cremes, blankets, baskets, etc. etc. I usually use Saturday for browsing and getting that one or two things I know will sell out, and Sunday for more leisurely wandering. Saturday is also a great day for celebrity sightings. One last thing, you have to get your lodging almost a year in advance, and Airbnbs are reasonable closer in, but even now a lot have already been booked, so book early, early early. I tried to book the Airbnb I stayed in with my friends when I got back form the weekend, and it had already been booked for the next year. It's getting crazy for sure. Hope you enjoy next year!

Hi Amy, I think your review is spot on! I have been to Rhinebeck and did Love it! I also have been to Indie Untangled when it first began (it was in MD the year I went) and it was much smaller than it is today. I do remember the food lines being much too long. I’m sure it’s just the pure volume of shoppers, but they could stand to add some extra food vendors. I also agree with your feelings on the Rhinebeck sweater - I plan to participate in it next year. I’m south of Boston, and budget conscious so I may just go for the day, but if I do stay I’ll plan the social aspect on Saturday and my shopping day on Sunday. Enjoyed your vlog, thank you!

I was there on Sunday and I have heard it was a better experience. Much less crowded. I grew up in the Hudson valley and my mother still lives 1.5 hours away. It was my first time going also. I loved it !

If you liked the atmosphere and the extra stuff of rhibebeck but not the crowds, I recommend checking out New England Fiber Festival (this weekend this year). Its indoors and wonderfully layed out - it never felt crowded to me last year. And its right at home in MA 😊

Glad you were able to attend Rhinebeck. I was there this year, and it was very crowded on Saturday, but Sunday is a more quiet and relaxing experience overall. There is so much to see with more rustic farm yarn, to hand died died yarns. There are cashmere and, yak and other unique fibers, along with potters and woodworkers, and the food building with tastings for cider and shrubs. I do think it helps to have a game plan for Saturday, and hit up the vendors that you’re worried about selling out, that you want to be able to have an opportunity to get whatever you’re looking for. Maybe consider doing some of the 🐑 shows, taking pictures with the sheep and the llamas and alpacas and the goats. There are dog herding competitions sheer to shawl competitions. I guess what I’m trying to say is have a plan and have Saturday incorporate more events to experience along with those targeted vendors that you want to see before they sell out. And Sunday can be more leisurely shopping. The restaurants in Rhinebeck are amazing as well as in Saugerties and definitely worth the experience.

I'm a University student in Canada, and I love watching/ listening to your videos while working :) There was recently a fiber crafts festival about 10 hours away from where I live and I was about an hour away from it when it was happening, but I did not know about it until the day of! Fingers crossed I can go next year. It is crazy how big Rhinebeck is, I had no clue it was multiple locations and days. So so very cool :D

My mom and I went last year and we were so unprepared for how big it was! We did get there early and do both days and now I’m so glad the weather wasn’t totally ideal because I can’t imagine it being more crowded! We were up for several days and did more the Hudson River Valley towns and tourist things in addition to visiting local yarn stores and it was a def a nice contrast to events and straight shopping.

Hi Amy - I always look forward to your videos and I completely understand your feelings toward NYSW. So many people are overwhelmed by the first time they attend. I live in CT and am less than 2 hours away, but friends and I always rent a house Th-Sun. We try to get to each event when they open - that really helps with being able to see some vendors without the crowds. That being said, it doesn’t take long for the crowds to appear, so we decide ahead of time who it is we want to see and have a prioritized list. I do hope you are not too soured by this experience. Once you know what to expect, the next time is much better.

I grew up going to sheep & wool festivals as more of an agricultural fair. My family focused on the sheep and 4H so it was weird for me to hear so much about sheep & wool festivals when I got into knitting podcasts! It’s really great to now go for the yarn but honestly, I still have the most fun with the sheep demos etc. there’s a really funny alpaca/goat obstacle course competition on Sunday that I would HIGHLY recommend you go to in the future 😂 hope to see you at the next one!

This is a fair assessment of Rhinebeck. I went in 2022 and am planning on going again next year. I fly in, and last time didn’t do any of the Friday events, but did go to NYS&W both Saturday and Sunday. My best friend from High School lives an hour away, so for me it’s also an excuse to visit her. Next year, I want to do a Friday event, skip Saturday, and just go Sunday. If my friend wasn’t there, I’m not sure I’d be going back so quickly!

I learned three main ways to make NYSW more organized. Get there early, bring your own lunch and have some sort of plan to see the venders you are interested in. Also just assume you will be waiting in lines and dealing with crowds all day. Glad you got to experience the “ Rhinebeck” experience.

The Fiber Festival of New England is November 2,3. Its all indoors and has a good variety of vendors, many of them were also at NY Sheep and Wool. They also have a fleece sale and some animals to pet. Its held at the Eastern States Fairgrounds in West Springfield, MA. Perhaps an option for next year.

I'm SO sorry you had such a comparably negative experience! I did attend both days and had a much different experience. Sunday was indeed much less packed, but I would personally still attend both days to get limited opportunity special colorways Indie Dyers offer at NYS S&W only. That's just me and I am a sucker for those offerings. I do hope you will try again in the future, going much earlier to account for the morning crowds, and make specific plans of what you'd like to purchase or who you'd like to see so that it doesn't feel like walking around aimlessly (that's how I'd feel). It can be harder with fiber merchants as fewer of them have good websites to review in advance of the show.

Hello! I was on the lookout for you at Rhinebeck, but I think I was blinded by all the lovely yarn! This is my second year, and I was lucky to have someone my first year who had been many times, so I didn’t feel super overwhelmed, but if I hadn’t had that, I would have felt like you did. I would definitely recommend coming for both days to not feel like you have to cram everything in in one day. Also the donuts are worth the line; we usually go on Sunday and the line is shorter. It’s cash only, which as a Canadian was a bit of an issue the first year, but now I know!

Sunday seemed as busy to me, especially the letter Buildings and even the parking lot. I’m 3 1/2 hours away. It seemed similar to Maryland sheep & wool but bigger. I won’t do NY every year.

You’ve pretty much described my first year experience. You learn new tips every year! At this point, I plan to get there first thing, get my lunch before 11:30, get my donuts as soon as I see the line forming, etc. I am not a huge fan of Saturday, though I think that is when a lot of the meetups happen. The crowds in the buildings are just too intense.

I know people that go every year and they go for the entire weekend- with a plan. Shop for a few hours, then sit and meet up with people/ eat food, and then more looking around. The festival actually was originally started as a place for the sheep farmers … there is best of breed show, classes and demonstrations on raising, grooming ,sheeting demo, farm collie herding , Picture a 4H event .. ,, some of the sheep I think are even for sale and the farm equipment and there is an auction . Then the farmers started selling fleece ( enter the spinners) .. then roving , then yarn etc etc.

I live in NYC and started knitting/crocheting last year so was super excited to attend Rhinebeck after hearing so much about it - overall, I feel like it was overhyped. Prado De Lana had some beautifully "rustic yet soft" wools that I loved. There was a cashmere vendor as well, Clean Cashmere, whose products were absolutely lovely (but out of my budget sadly!)

I lived in the Hudson Valley (New Paltz) until 2-1/2 years ago when we moved to Salem, Mass. I went to the Rhinebeck festival a long time ago when it was much smaller. I would NOT do well there - I have an intense dislike of large crowds (which is why I steer clear of downtown Salem during October lol!) I've watched several "Rhinebeck" videos and everybody's saying the same thing. It seems to be getting bigger every year and becoming not so much fun. Most that I've watched said that Sunday was slightly better, so maybe that would be the day to go.

Been doing two days since 2004 and there is a critical mass time mid day at the fairgrounds that A lot of us just take a break and relax and knit and people watch …. Families with young children I think want to get in and out , or day trippers want to get on the road ,, so the last few hours both days are VERY calm …. I prefer the event at the fairgrounds because I buy locally sourced farm raised wool which you can’t find everywhere… unfortunately a lot of those farmers are retiring 😢😢 ..

Since you're in MA, you should check out the Sheep & Wool at the Big E in Springfield this weekend. Indoors, so the weather doesn't really matter and it's less crowded. It is pretty much just shopping, though. So you won't have all the fun of the animals and other things that make NYS&W so great.

For the Friday events (Indie and Cake), there were entrance fees with timed entries. NY Sheep and Wool has single-day passes and you can arrive at any time! My tix were $13.50 and they were available at the door for $15. I don't think it's common for NY Sheep and Wool to sell out, but for the Friday events it's much better to buy your tickets ahead of time.

We have been going for years to both rhinbeck and MD … Best to go both days because there is a time period 11-1/2pm on Saturday when the barns are very claustrophobic ( critical mass ) … that is when we take knitting breaks at a comfy spot and watch the beautiful sweaters so by❤. It’s kind of like Disney for knitters … you need to pace yourself … lol 😂 But the last couple hours on Sat and all day Sunday are MUCH MUCH less crowded.

Rhinebeck is about an hour outside NYC lines … Some folks fly into Newark NJ or Hartford CT and rent car. There are trains to the area from NYC but getting transport from the station to the fairgrounds etc is very challenging.

I find at cake thatYou are plenty done shopping when they are lining up for the next time slot . Indie the same except when you go to indie make sure you know that layout first so you don’t miss a tent and try to squeeze it in at the end which is a bummer.

I did not stay to the end of my time slot for Cake so I do not know if they check at the end. Indie gave wristbands that stated your time slot and they checked wristbands at the entrance of each of the stalls.

Probably! Everyone says "go to Rhinebeck" but no one says what to "do at Rhinebeck". Now I know for the future!

If you ever watched any other Rhinebeck videos you would know how big and crazy it is. After traveling from Boston and then in Albany why would you not get there till late morning and then not get in till 12 noon (a half day over)because of expected traffic. Also why would you not bring snacks and drinks for a day outing. I mean you must have known some of this. I think your experience would have been excellent if you got there at 9-9:30 when it was easy to park, no traffic, easy to move around and buy food. The. Take your time to rest and shop. The weather after having gone for over 20 years is usually pretty good and since the barns and shopping is covered even when it rains it’s very doable. After watching a few videos I think indie untangled looked much nicer than cakeapalooza. I would waste my time, next year will do indie and then Kingston for yarn farm shopping.
