Stone sucked, outdated, non--commercial, no hit singles, they tried to rap, seriously, no! Reprise shelved it for a reason it was terrible. However, 21 was exceptional, this is one of Diane Warren's best songs, it should of been a hit but it just wasn't, lack of promotion and the bands lack of interest didn't help. You can say the music landscape was changing but they could of squeezed a couple hits out of 21 without too much trouble it was solid.
@tim-hill
@tim-hill 2 жыл бұрын
@@laurastuhler4791 I listen to a lot more from their first 10 albums than their last 10. Stone fits more with the first 10. All The Years and Here With Me are difinitely commercial worthy. The Pull is probably the best song musically in my opinion.

Two great vocalists here. Scheff and Champlin we're destined to crank out more hits in the 1990s, but instead Chicago retreated and gave us tons of greatest hits compilations in that decade.

It's unfortunate because I can see things going a different direction had "Stone of Sisyphus" been released instead of getting rejected last-minute by the record company. If I remember right, that event really took a toll on the band, which is probably why they ended up not releasing much.

The entire "21" album, is, in my opinion, the best that Chicago had ever done, especially this song in particular. They should have promoted the "21" album on their 21 tour and history would have been made. It still rocks on well beyond its 1991 release into the early 2020s and is much better than the majority of modern rock. This is classic and modern rock simultaneously.

"21" from cover to cover is probably my top Chicago album. When I saw them on tour when they were promoting this album I was disappointed as others that they didn't play more songs from this album. I think they only played "Chasin the WInd" when I saw them on that tour. "Explain it to my Heart" is probably my top song on this album and when I met Jason and Lee several years ago on separate occasions they both agreed when I said this was a very underrated Chicago album. Lee gave me some insight and said when they tried pushing this song the stations were like we have enough Chicago songs and that's probably why it didn't chart higher. Other great songs on this album are "Holdin On", "One from the Heart", "You Come to my Senses", etc. Honestly not a bad song on this whole album.

Saw them in 1986 on the "18" tour and they played almost everything from "18" (even "Niagara Falls" and "Forever", for Chrissakes) as well as songs from the Peter Cetera/Terry Kath era.

Thanks for the great feedback on this. Danny didn't really mention this album in his book either! In another lifetime, this song would be #1 in 1990-1991. It's even better IMO than Because You Loved Me. Same D-flat key signature too!

A year earlier? They had "What Kind of Man What I Be" peaking on the charts in Feb. 1990 off their greatest hits album. Then in the summer of 1990 (July) they had "Hearts In Trouble" from Days of Thunder. If anything they should of waited LONGER as many attributed the failure of 21 to over saturation of Chicago songs. @@lamarravery4094

I read a band interview that stated Warren outdid herself here but had an even bigger (and similar) hit in '96 for Celine (Because You Loved Me). However, this album would probably be remembered well in Asia or other areas where Chicago was popular.

No, this was a big hit in the States in 1991 when it came out. Grunge didn't affect this. It was more glam metal that was affect. This is not hair or glam metal. It's rock combined with sub-Saharan Episcopal choir brass (the use of brass instruments). Chicago has been sampled by rappers.

Chicago are a brilliant band & I love their music, but Diane Warren wrote this song along with countless classics for other artists too. I think, Chicago would agree with me because they have sung some of her songs. I wish I had the talent to write songs, I love music & wish I stuck to it from an early age learning guitar. Great bands and great songwriters will grow old and stop performing but their music that touches the heart and soul will live forever. I only wish I could see Chicago live before they stop playing & Diane, keep up the great work you do as a fantastic songwriter.

I have every album made by Chicago, have every video of their concerts, and have seen them live 12 times. (I even have a personal letter from Dawayne Baily after he was fired). If I had to pick my personal fave album, it's 21. I also love the Grammy winning Chicago 17 because the mixing and musicianship on that one is superb but the dynamics suck due to compression. I understand there's no future for us here. Guess I fooled myself into thinking there was. Now you've made it clear. It'll never be right, guess we knew it all along. Now we've got to say goodbye and I've got to be strong. So tell me one more time how it's better for the both of us? Tell me one more time how we'll hurt each other if we stay? Tell me one more time, then darling, there's just one more thing? Before you walk away, explain it to my heart? It's better that we're over now. Tell me one more time this is the way that it's supposed to be? Tell me that I'm better off without you? How it's better to forget about you? Darling, I understand won't you please explain it to my heart? Now, if I try, I can see the reasons why. Why we can't stay together, and I might convince my mind? But it's breaking my heart to know I've got to let you go. To find that, I must leave behind the only love I've known Well, I can tell myself that I never really needed you. I can tell myself that it's better just to say goodbye. I can tell myself about the lies But tell me now, tell me, how do I Explain it to my heart It's better that we're over now? Tell me one more time this is the way that it's supposed to be? Tell me that I'm better off without you. How it's better to forget about you? Darling, I understand Won't you please explain it to my heart? Say that I'll be better If we don't stay together Say that I'll be better off free. But don't say it to me. Explain it to my heart. Tell me that I'm better off without you. It's better to forget about you Darling, I understand now, won't you please explain it to my heart? It's better that we're over now. @@jasonburger3533 One thing I notice about Chicago's songs is that they seem to feature more adult themes about relationships in their videos eg being married, and actors in their twenties maybe early thirties. Maybe it's because Chicago has more longevity, they didn't make many videos and weren't a Love Song Band in their very early days. All I know is that I only like their more love song period from about the mid 80s. Maybe these are the reasons why, to me, they have mostly GREAT songs but these songs aren't massive and hit the charts. A lot of songs gain fame more by hype and the artists notoriety rather than being GREAT songs. That's how I feel about artists and their songs over here in Northern Ireland anyway.

Peter Cetera??

@@benjaminmiller275 They had the 21 album and the 21 tour, but supposedly did not perform the 21 album songs on the 21 tour. Was it really that way at those shows? 21 was among the best they made.

@@jasonburger3533 Yes I was there, no songs from 21 have EVER been performed live except "You Come to My Senses" and that was only once on Arsenio Hall and it was terrible.

@@peterrukavena4955 When you say that you were there, I think you mean lived through that era when the album had been released and attended live shows. I saw the performance of "You Come To My Senses" on the Arsenio Hall Show through a KZbin clip. It was not their best they could have done. The "21" album was good, in my opinion. They should have performed every song from it live and made a video for each song. I do not know why they did not do that. I do not know why it was not promoted.

@@peterrukavena4955I agree that "You Come To My Senses" on Arsenio Hall somehow came in with none of the quality the studio recording had. It is a decent song, but it flopped on Arsenio Hall. They should have done the "21" tour for real and promoted the album as much as possible.
