Gary is hilarious! The "Welcome" mat beside the round bed and the enormous disco ball in his bedroom are screamingly funny. I turned 21 in 1974, and the character of Gary nailed the lounge lizard, necklace wearing types from that era. The aviator-style glasses were an accessory staple. The only things he's missing are white shoes and a white belt. UGH!! Even his pickup lines are spot on. There was a tacky so-called singles bar here in LVL called Flaherty's III where Gary would've fit right in. There were DROVES of these guys in the place on any given night. I'm pretty sure a large percentage of the "single guys" weren't. There were no natural fibers to be found adorning these clowns (at least Gary wears denim), My friends and I only went to the place once, mainly to observe, and stayed only 30 minutes. It was surreal.

What a GREAT SHOW!!!
@mthivier2 ай бұрын
Being a teenager when these episodes first aired in the '70s, most of it escaped me, but rewatching as an adult now, I think they were extremely well-written and ground-breaking. TV sitcoms had referenced separation and divorce before (notably including the breakup of Lou Grant's marriage on MTM), but I believe this was the first time a show went ahead and separated its two primary characters, doing so over the course of an entire season, showing how they gradually disentangle from one-another, and ultimately divorce, just as happens in real life. And their marriage didn't end because one of them had an affair or engaged in some other bit of stereotypical behavior, but just because they were two very different people who couldn't make a go of it. It didn't go over with viewers, of course, because it was an incredible "downer" (especially for a sitcom), but it was incredibly realistic, and well-written storyline.

It is with the very beginning of season 3... that I started to despise Joe. The way they had him act in all the first three episodes is shameful. He wanted his freedom, his distance, and he also wanted to take advantage of Rhoda... emotionally AND physically. There are names for guys like that. These episodes of the separation don't impress me in any positive way at all. Come on girls... stand up for yourselves.

Gary is a lot more likable here than Joe. It’s sad the writers decided to turn Joe from Rhoda’s dream man into an obviously cheating jerk. Sad slide in this series from happy family show to artifact of the me generation. This show may even document the fall of our civilization, who knows?

Please stop blaming the writers. It was a production decision - as in the producers, one of whom plays Carlton the Doorman.

So Garfield wrote thus show (and played the doorman).

Why did the writers make Joe such a total pos?

Why didn't Rhoda just tell Gary to get out and stay out and don't bother her anymore at all???

I never liked Joe either. He looked like a big, hairy ape and was so...so...UGH! I agree - Rhoda was much cooler as a single, confident woman.
