The character of Johnny Venture is an icon of the 70s fully realized in all of his humanity. I give a lot of credit to the writers and actors for doing that in the context of a sitcom. I always found it interesting that they were able to incorporate not one but two Disney-type characters onto "Rhoda" - Nick Lobo and Johnny Venture. They kinda pushed the envelope as far as their believability but it worked quite well somehow. Richard Masur and Nick Lobo played the parts really well and they kept having them back for more episodes.

The twin towers were also in "Saturday Night Fever" for a few seconds. The north tower still had the original shorter mast--the big one was installed in 1978. I went to NYC in 1979, to celebrate New Year's eve in Times Square, and went to both towers--got lots of pics from the South tower observation, and from inside and from ground level. So sad to remember that awful day when they ceased to exist. I also had dinner one night at Windows On the World. What a view from there--not to ever be forgotten.

I don't know how Rhoda's honesty (even about her own self-admitted neuroses) could destroy any male ego. She was ahead of her time: out spoken, unafraid to admit her insecurities and fears while still being sexy and beautiful. Women would be lucky to have her for a friend (like MTM who spun off her series) and any decent man would be lucky to have her. The comments focusing on her thinness or heaviness seem pretty shallow and vapid compared to those remarks about her true character, which Valerie Harper consistently elevated to admirable heights.

What the backstory to all this is, is the hatred of the Rock-and-Roll illiterate generation for the Great American Songbook that came before and continues, if hidden. Johnny represents Entertainment, which saw itself rightly as serving a semi-Divine purpose, of uplifting the audience. To replace it, you have evil rock demons serving themselves and their drug-addled libidos. Or drug-devouring disco dippies. That's what Rhoda is representing, she is the dishonest one. Brenda and Gary appreciate him.

@Konga 5000 Johnny Venture may have been a cartoon character but he did represent lounge lizards (and to a degree, singer Tom Jones who always wore that huge cross and several rings, and who had a lot of sex after his shows with willing audience participants). I was in my late 20s when this was aired originally and I did NOT like Johnny, but now as a 70+ person, I find this characterization delicious. Michael appears to have had such a good time doing it, every time he appeared. I don't see that there really was anywhere to take him and her after that, though.

He appears to have had such a good time. I really liked Joe, too. I also didn't care for Nick until I saw Richard Masur as Anne's boyfriend on One Day At a Time, and I grew to appreciate Richard's characterization of Nick characterization as well.
