I’ve just started learning with my wife and Rumba was our pick. The thing that bothers me the most in Rumba is between beats 4 & 1. I’ve watched many videos and you’re the only instructor so far that explained the connection between 4&1 and 2&3. Your instructions and demos are the best! Thank you!

When you are an advanced rumba dancer in International Latin, you will face a recognized syncopated rhythm in rumba called "guapacha timing." Take the rumba basic timing, like this: 2 3 4-1, 2 3 4-1, 2 and 3, 4 and 1, 2 3 4-1, 2 3 4-1, etc. Now, with guapacha timing, you will have more syncopations and more pauses than the basic rumba timing. You will see guapacha in novice, pre-championship, and championship level rumba (the so-called "open style" levels). Here is an example of guapacha timing....basically the first half of the 2nd beat is held with no foot movement, and foot movement is resumed on the second half of the 2nd beat...... 2 3 4-1....(hold 2) and 3 4-1 (hold 2) and 3 4-1 (hold 2) and 3 4 and 1 2 and 3 4-1 (hold 2), etc. Whether it is basic timing or guapacha timing, since Rumba comes from Cuba, modern Latin ballroom dancers call this "Cuban timing", focusing on the strong accent on the "2" beat, not on the "1". This also happens in Mambo as well.

I have gave you comment before! Your explenation is very good! My first teacher who died a few years ago, once said?! Of you can dance slowfox technicaly good? You can dance anything . Is that true Egils?
@EgilsSmagris

Slow Foxtrot is considered technically most difficult dance. In this sense, your dance teacher was right - if you learn how to perform the slow foxtrot technically and musically correctly, then you will learn other ballroom dances easily.

I love your teaching. I am confusing with lady step when dancing as a couple. How come the lady is step back left foot? I thought laday alway step back with right foot.
@EgilsSmagris
@EgilsSmagris 5 ай бұрын
Some figures start for Lady with right foot and others with left foot. In USA (but not in Europe) generally Ladies are taught always start with right foot. So you either choose to start with "right foot figure" or start with preparation step with right foot (as advanced dancers usually do) before left foot figure. Hope it helps.

Thank you so much for your explanation! Because of the 2nd beat of Rumba rhythm is soft, I like to put it in count step 1 (hold) Could I match count step 2 with 3rd beat of Rumba rhythm? So the sequential order step count in one Rumba rhythm music bar should be: "4, hold, 2, 3"
@EgilsSmagris
@EgilsSmagris 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. 4, hold, 2, 3 - is good way to count. Later instead of "hold" I suggest to develop body / hip action.

BRAVO!!! Foxtrot = 4/4. Most videos offer basic shacks like this: slow - slow - quick, quick.. And this is 3/4. That is, the rhythm of the Waltz. It’s very difficult to dance 3/4 when music is 4/4
@lukdod73
@lukdod73 5 жыл бұрын
Slow-slow-quick-quick is 6/4. The Waltz rhythm is 3/3.
@sax-show
@sax-show 5 жыл бұрын
@@lukdod73 size 3/3 does not exist. All music is measured in quarters (rarely eighths). Each beat is a quarter. Tango, foxtrot. samba, quickstep, rumba, salsa, paso doble, jive - all this music = 4/4. Only waltz 3/4. Your 6/4 size is equivalent to two 3/4 bar. I recall the 3/4 waltz size
@lukdod73
@lukdod73 5 жыл бұрын
@@sax-show In the Waltz dance we have 3-beat basic pattern - slow, slow, slow. In the Waltz music there are also 3 beats in a bar. In the Foxtrot music there are 4 beats in a bar. But in the Social Foxtrot dance there are 6 beats in a basic pattern - slow, slow, quick, quick. So one basic move needs one and a half music bar.
@evgenysax
@evgenysax 5 жыл бұрын
@@lukdod73 That's why I say that it is impossible to place 6/4 in a bar that consists of 4/4. After 8 or 16 bars, the refrain begins. Each time a musical phrase begins or ends, you are in the middle of an unfinished figure, since 8, 16, 32 are not divided by 6 Music does not match the number of movements. Try dancing your 6/4 foxtrot version when an English waltz sounds. Everything surprisingly coincides with the music.
@sax-show
@sax-show 5 жыл бұрын
@@lukdod73 This is exactly what I'm talking about. “It takes one and a half music bars for one major movement.” Thus, the first figure ends in the middle of a musical phrase. The second and subsequent main figures no longer coincide with accents in the musical accompaniment. That is, when a new musical line or refrain begins, we are in the middle of the basic figure. Therefore, for a person who listens to music and dancing is very inconvenient. You just need to listen to the beats, and not think about the song ... However, I found some videos claiming that the foxtrot is slow, quick,quick. And in this video the same way. And it pleases

You are the best, keep on doing the great work, and thank you so much this helps a lot, There are options I can choose from now. I was also checking this other count as well 1&2&, 2&2&, 3&2&, 4&2&, etc., which seems to be a little tricky but I think I understand.

Ok. So Tango 2 Walks, Progressive Link, Closed promenade can be counted as 12, 34, 2,2, 34, 3, 2, 34? [SS, Q,Q, S, Q,Q, S] and is there a other way of counting Tango?
@EgilsSmagris
@EgilsSmagris 7 жыл бұрын
Lisa this is correct count for Tango. You can count also till 8: 12345678 22345678 32345678 etc. There is also "old" way of counting Tango because of 2/4 music where one beat corresponds to Slow, half beat corresponds to Quick. So 2 Walks, Progressive Link, Closed promenade can be caunted as 1,2,2,&,2,3,&,2.

Thank you for the counting lesson. Can you do another one on the cha cha cha. In the rumba, when the music starts, it's 4/4 time, the first for to move is the left which moves forward with the 4 count? There is no movement of the feet until the left goes forward on the forth beat of the music?

Thanks, I wil think about Cha Counting video! About Rumba - all figures start on Count 2 and usually Man goes on 2 with left foot forward. But very often dancers start with introductory step on 4 and hip action on 1; and only then continue with any Rumba figure. Does it help?

Thanks Egils for the info very helpful, how ever i need to clear one thing up in International style rumba all figures start on Count 2 (the mans left foot moves forward on the 2) as in your video. But do I apply this same count as (in video) to the American style rumba?. My Main Question is in the American Style Rumba (Box step) does the mans left foot move forward on the 2 or the 1, or are they the same? thanks again
@EgilsSmagris
@EgilsSmagris 8 жыл бұрын
Basic American Style Box starts for Man with left foot forward on 1. This means it's different from International Style Ruma. In American Style we connect 1 with 2 (slow), and 3 with 4 (QQ - side close). In International Style we connect 4 with 1 (slow) and 2 with 3 (QQ - rock). Hope it helps.
