My friend Jason Scheff and I do an impromptu jam session on the chords to earth wind and fire's "that's the way of the world".
Jason has been the bassist and lead singer in the band "Chicago" for a many years.
His father is also a bass legend, having recorded and played with the Doors and Elvis Presley, among many others...
Jason talks about how he approaches rhythm, and though he is a bass player, his concept totally applies to us, as guitar players.
If you'd like to check out the Full seven video series that Jason and I did, try the 14 day free trial in the master class.

the 16th note thing is such a good point. When I am instructing amateur bands while teaching music - they always tend to drop off and get sloppy when playing ballads or slow or quite parts - because they latch onto the mood rather than the rythm and loose their timing. Making them focus on the subdivision makes them more alert and concentrated in the moment, it mentally "fills up" the spaces in a slower arrangement where they are "on their own" with nothing to do but let a note ring or a pause speak. As a consequence everything becomes tighter, more energized and best of all - it affects the dynamics of their playing in suble way and they grow more naturally attentive to the placement, volume and duration of notes

Always the most useful lessons you cant get from a book. You need a person who's walked down that road to be like "hey, think about it like this". Scales, harmony, technique, etc, I can read up on that, but not this. Thanks so much.

Thanks for this. I've always used 16ths as my measuring stick on the Metronome (about 25 years now) and it has integrated into my playing heavily. I've often wondered if I was approaching the concept a bit differently than others and questioned what I have been doing constantly. This verifies for me that this is a huge reason why I play the way I do and can seemlessly integrate varying degrees of rhythmic structure into my playing. Great video.

One of the most difficult things to do is to get an amateur to understand that he's an amateur and to understand what a professional is. Not understanding that is why he's an amateur and why his music just doesn't cut it. I swear there are some people that are permanent amateurs, no amount of training will get them to see. The amateur doesn't know there's something to know, the pro knows he doesn't know and therefore can learn. I love how you guys are discussing the topic of the professional. So important.
@northof50now
@northof50now 7 жыл бұрын
The only thing that separates a professional and an amateur is that the professional has convinced someone to pay him for his ability. I've heard my share of really bad music by "professionals" and have been completely entertained by some street artists.

Jason is great and I am sure his legendary father taught him some great stuff. Great point about 16th notes, I actually do that but NEVER actually thought about it. Groove is sadly missing with too many young musicians. The word pocket doesn't exist in their vernacular.

Honest question: What is it with guitar players that most of their solos are just a waterfall of notes? No breaks, no pauses, just a continuous flood of tones.
@TheSammyreynolds
@TheSammyreynolds 7 жыл бұрын
That's why I love horn players. They have to take breaths and I think that's why you get better melodies.
@guycollishaw1957
@guycollishaw1957 7 жыл бұрын
Brazen NL You probably don't listen to enough guitar playing maybe... It depends on the genre of music I guess. But there are plenty of pauses in guitar solos, I was always told it's what you don't play that can be very effective as well.
@kitano0
@kitano0 7 жыл бұрын
Well, not all guitar players are alike. I think in Tim's case that it is his strong point, The "waterfall" effect he gets is one of his signature sounds, in my opinion, and he does it well. It's not easy to do, because there is a sound behind the sound he gets, and lots of classical pianists get, that is acheived when you flow like that. I agree, though, that lots of guitar players do play too much and don't let the music breathe, or they don't know when to quit.
@BrazenNL
@BrazenNL 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, maybe horn players are lucky, in the sense that they have to breathe.

30 years of desperation. Jason had to follow one of the two greatest bassist/vocalist ever. That's how great Peter Cetera was. BTW, the other guy is Paul McCartney. Two other bass player/vocalists I like are John Lodge of the Moody Blues and John Entwhistle of The Who. Jason is sorely underrated. Love the guy.
