Mass Appeal

Күн бұрын

"I lucked up," said Chuck Inglish, surveying his haul from Good Records in NYC. "I can't believe I was blindfolded!" Guided by unseen forces, the production specialist of rap duo The Cool Kids selected "a classic classic classic record" Roy Ayers' Ubiquity as well as Tuff City Squad's 1992 'Beats for Jeeps' and 'Last Exit' by Traffic. His partner in rhyme Sir Michael Rocks stopped by the record shop to wish him well then it was up to Chuck to hit the studio and do the damn thing. Chuck's biggest challenge may have been the fact that the Roy Ayers joint has been used so many times before. "I'ma try to flip it in a different way," said Chuck, strategizing over his vinyl resources. "We'll use the textures from this…. I'm gonna try to find the drums from this… extra effects from this." Getting creative with the slider and the stylus, Chuck sampled some ill loops and pieced them all together in his own inimitable fashion, adding some keys over top just to sweeten the pot. "This was the find," he said afterwords, holding up the record by Tuff City Squad, who he hadn't heard of before. "This is the spirit of why Rhythm Roulette is so cool to me… To pick this out blindfolded is crazy." Check out a master at work right now.

He made a beat all out of samples and it sounds completely different than what he sampled. If you're a producer then you have to respect it.

So of ya'll must have musical blinders on. This dude flipped a none sample in a way that IVE NEVER HEARD it flipped. Then layed a drum sample that fit perfectly with the Roy Ayers sample. Also, if I'm not mistaken, he took the Traffic sample and brought it down to it's note and dragged out the sample, then did what dilla would've did and just play the sample in the keyboard. I'm sure with the right lyrics and chorus, the song would be an amazing chuck inglish beat. I know for a fact, if dilla was alive he would've been upset that he didn't flip those samples the same way considering he makes funk beats in the same way (midwest sound). Maybe someone was waiting for a trap beat or something.

I agree man he managed to put those 3 record together to make a beat while some just looped a sample and add some 808 on top of it.

I used the same method on samples back in the day. A friend gifted me an Ensoniq EPS Classic 8 and I use to just sample notes and play my own melodies and chords. I was blessed to start learning using Mackie 24 track, 3 ADATS, MPC 3000, and Roland JV-1080 & 2080 (fully expanded). So when it came time to use less equipment I had already grown accustomed to playing everything. With such limited tracks and memory you had to conserve your sample time. I would just sample notes, use polyphony and create main instrument parts with 5 tracks and then the drums with 3 tracks and the 1 or 2 song tracks. (OG's know about flippin the song tracks Lol)

What he did took real sampling skills. Most producers just take a loop from the record and throw some drums and an 808 on it. He literally sampled every record, and every sound he used came from the records.
@andgar923

Not only did he sample every record, he manipulated it's sound to make it fit. The beat was 'meh' but I respect the technique.

He sampled from all records and made it one beat all in the same matching key. That takes some skill. More about how he did the beat versus how it sounded. Still sounded cool too....

Might have been short, but Chuck knew what he was doing to fit three samples into one song. If no one considers that to be imaginative, then you either have higher expectations or lower expectations of what creativity really is.

K D I apologize. When someone says that they're going to use the drums and sounds from a record, I don't take it literally. I naturally think they're going to chop each snare, kick, hi hat from a loop that they've already chopped from the sample to create their own drum sequence. Then chop, manipulate, and rearrange the melodic instruments into something completely different. Beef up the drum chops, whether layered, or using compression amongst other effects. Then I'd physically add my own paint on the canvas I made.
