I used a 5mm crochet hook
70 starter chains
HDC only in the back loops
22 rows total

Hi so i used a 4mm hook and made the 70 chains but its tiny i now realized that the first chains have to be 22 inches I think ill just finish the rows and give it to my baby cousin so it doesnt go to waste

yes! using different hook sizes does alter the measurements, i’ve replied to a few comments with the measurement once I make this hat again i’ll add the measurements in the description

Hi I'm rlly confused on the "halfway" part bc I follow your measurements and all but it doesn't rlly look the same

the halfway part is mostly if you want to make it two toned, if you don’t you just keep going. are you using the same hook size as me? (5mm) sometimes using a diffrent size chnages the dimensions. the legnth should be 22 inches and the width 11 inches

this was an amazing tutorial but definitely too small for my head, also whenever i crochet my rows, it becomes much smaller than the actual chains is that supposed to happen?

are you using a hook size smaller than a 5mm or a smaller yarn weight? if you are it won’t match up to my size, if your rows are decreasing that means ur accidentally skipping stitches when u flip ur work, you’re supposed to go to the first immediately stitch after turning, if not then rows becoming smaller and smaller happens

Yea ur gonna do 22 rows and than fold

since ur making a large rectangle when u fold it, it makes the full circumference therefore you need 22 rows

I used a 4 weight and a 5mm, you can definitely use a smaller hook size but you’d have to do more rows, the width should measure 11 inches

yes bc smaller size you’d have to add a few more rows and bigger size you have to add less rows

yes there’s 22 rows all together but one of the ways to count them is counting 11 that stick out bc every row would count as 2, does that make sense?

yes, bc it’ll make the ribbed look longer and wider and you’d need less rows since the stitch is a little bigger but if you don’t mind that and go for it! the legnth of the starter chain is 22 inches, and the width of the panel is 11 inches (when folded it makes the 22inches all around)

This is a great tutorial I was just wondering if u have the final measurements as I am using a different type of wool ? I saw one of your other comments said 22 inches but I wasn't sure if that was the whole beanie or halfway sorry still a beginner .

CAT beanie: the length should be 22 inches ↕️ and the width is 11 inches ↔️ the halfway part I mention is if you want to make it two toned, that’s the part where u should add the other color so it’s even on both sides REGULAR beanies: it should be the length 11 inches ↕️ and the width is 22 inches ↔️

I always do back loop only but for some reason it just looks like normal rows, the yarn I use isn’t super thick or thin, am I meant to try to do it really tight or lose? I usually pull the yarn out a bit since I use a small hook so that might be why but idk

you don’t really see the effect until around the 4th ish row, if you’re still in the first 2 it’s going to look regular, you could loosen up a little when you crochet that might help see the stitch better too

did u use a weight 4? measure your head and divide that and make the panel the half of that number so when folded it makes it all around

all the rows will be on the back loop, there will be 22 rows total, but if you’re making it two tone then the first 11 is color 1 and the other 11 is color 2 but again, all in the backloop

yes, you lay out down the long way and then fold it (you’ll have a square) and then stitch both sides and flip it inside out and then flip again at the brim

you can do slip stitches but it’ll be a little bit bulky, a tapestry needle just makes it almost seamless

it’s not a major difference, make the e chain normally and to double check just make sure it measures 22 inches and for the width it should be 11 inches (once folded it’ll be 22 all around)

the back loop is the literally backloop, notice how when u make a stitch it looks like there two loops? well only use the want behind the first one which makes it the backloop

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? one side is straight but the other side is slowly going more and more in wards this has happend before and I have no clue how to fix it ive looked it up and it said I'm not starting the row in the right place but I cant figure out where the right place is? i just want a cute cat hat :c I'm gonna restart and try counting my stiches? I saw somewhere say that helps! but i allways forget what number i was on..

Hi! I had this exact same issue! Yes counting stitches helps but also make sure you chain 1 at the end of each row and start the next row in the second stitch from the hook:) so the first double crochet stitch not the chain you added:) - to keep count either write it down or use stitch markers and mark them every 10 or so in your work so then you know where you’re at:) also make sure you go into the last stitch of your work too! Again stitch markers are great to show you where that last stitch is:) I jsut finished my beanie and it has a lot of mistakes from what I learnt alone the way but it’s still super cute! Good luck:)

another thing that might help is that when u go to the end you also do a backloop on that because if you don’t, it’ll start decreasing, thats why one side is shorter, bc ur accidentally decreasing by skipping a stitch or two
