Great video Rich. I've noticed the same thing myself. I've been using the hi hat foot for years. I love splashing it because you're sort of getting a free hit. You can splash with your foot freeing up a hand, leaving you with a fuller sound. It's great for creating extra drive on up beat shuffles or any genre of music when needed. (Choruses or the bridge sections).

I'm not crazy about the sound in his videos but it's good to see someone who isn't relying on double bass drum and crazy fills. Sometimes all you need are simple beats.

I love the left foot, use the hi-hat all the time, it's my metronome. In jazz and in ballads I use it to play 6 over 4 patterns and other syncopated beats. Playing it on the "ands" of the groove locks in beat and creates a nice flowing feel. Check out my covers of "Let It Rain" and "Layla" for examples. Also use it as a ride such as in U2 cover of "With or Without You" toward the outro.

TO ALL HATERS..yes we know you guys are jealous of Rich. yes we know you probably arent good at drums and your also probably mad that a drummer in a country band is making some drummers look stupid. the points he is making are true. he is very well educated. he knows how to lay it down. he is teaching you something important.smart ass remarks are annoying. if your gonna put down good advice and a good teacher, then your ignorant and have no buisness commenting on the video.

I really love this style of play, and I do firmly believe that there are WAY, WAY too many drummers on youtube who are inextricably bound up with complex approaches at the expense of laying down a big, bullshit free beat that anybody can feel the one of. However, I have to say I don't get this putting the hat on the 2 and 4. Cos that's where the snare is and I simply can't hear it. I don't think the snare needs any more emphasis - especially not when it's given the pounding this guys metes out.

my god, people are so damn picky on youtube. in my experience you just can't win on here. People will love and hate you, and think they can say any kind of nonsense and hide behind their username. Just pick up some sticks and practice, it's a better use of time than complaining about a video
