It's been 3 months since I last placed a comment about this amazing song, and I have to say that I was so happy to find that it was included on their "Future Road" album which I have since brought. To tell you the truth I think I must have played it almost 100 times by now, it's so captivating a song and sung so very beautifully by Judith, but it's also remarkable for it's wonderful heartfelt romantic lyrics of a sad tale of a young girl which is pure Australian origin. I'd be hard pressed to find any better lyrics than these on any other song. I take my hat off to the composer. but of course at the same time I have to credit the Seekers for finding this poetic gem and turning it into this incredible classic little song which in my opinion is a tad underrated considering a lot of their other very fine songs. Just my opinion...

Yes, the late Judith Durham and The Seekers are national treasures and it is good that so many of their fans are scattered around the globe. As I recall the song "The Bush Girl" takes its sad and engaging text from the 19th century Henry Lawson poem of the same name. Australian singer, Shirley Jacobs, put the same lament to song in the 1970s.

I was a 14 year old boy in 1965 when The Seekers first came onto the pop music scene and although I loved their music back then I was, like most people, more into the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Now at the age of 69 I absolutely adore them and will do to the day I die. As for Judith Durham I’ll just repeat what just everyone else says. She has a beauty of voice that no-one can match and an equally wonderful singing talent to go with it.

The Seekers and every solo release Judith Durham has ever done is in my Mind, Heart, & Soul. She is the True Voice of an Angel. I am gutted over her passing and love her with All My Heart along with the rest of the world who truly know Everything about The Seekers and Judith’s life. This performance of The Bush Girl is Gorgeous. There are only a handful of bands that even come close to this Stellar caliber.

From the very start of it with Keith and Bruce's excellent guitar playing to the touching sad lyrics that are sung with lovely Judith putting her heart & soul into every word of this beautiful song. Yes The Seekers are the best group ever...... as is the folk music era of the 50's 60's. We must thank our you tube friends for putting the Seekers and other Folk music out here for us as if they did not it would be hard to find as the radio stations only play what was the big hit by each group or artist. and Folk would probably get lost...... and the Seekers.. well they are just "In A World of Their Own.... that no one else can share...... This song is another marvelous discovery for me. As I was listening to it, my impression of The Seekers as the Australian PP&M or Ian & Sylvia was shifting to the Australian Weavers. Ronnie Gilbert also had that bright, cheerful, penetrating quality to her voice. Judith is truly a living legend, on a par with the best of 'em! Addendum: I now find that the words are by Australian bush poet Henry Lawson (1867-1922), put to music by Seeker, Bruce Woodley (presumably in, or shortly before 1997, but don't quote me). Coincidentally, Henry Lawson's work is greatly admired by another favorite performer of mine, Canadian singer/songwriter Garnet Rogers (1955-), younger brother and former bandmate of the late Stan Rogers (1949-1983). Garnet used another Lawson poem-set-to-music as the title track to his 1986 album, _The Outside Track._ Incidentally, Lawson's poem, _The Outside Track,_ was set to music by Gerry Hollom, whom I know nothing about. So you rode from the range where your brothers select Through the ghostly grey bush in the dawn You rode slowly at first lest her heart should suspect That you were so glad to be gone You had scarcely the courage to glance back at her By the homestead receding from view And you breathed with relief as you rounded the spur For the world was a wide world to you Grey eyes that grow sadder than sunset or rain Fond heart that is ever more true Firm faith that grows firmer for watching in vain She'll wait by the sliprails for you Ah the world is a new and a wide one to you But the world to your sweetheart is shut For a change never comes to the lonely bush girl From the stockyard the bush and the hut And the only relief from its dullness she feels Is when ridges grow softened and dim And away in the dusk to the sliprails she steals To dream of past meetings with him Grey eyes that grow sadder than sunset or rain Fond heart that is ever more true Firm faith that grows firmer for watching in vain She'll wait by the sliprails for you Do you think where in place of bare fences dry creeks Clear streams and green hedges are seen Where the girls have lily and rose in their cheeks And the grass in midsummer is green? Do you think now and then now or then in the whirl Of the city while London is new Of the hut in the bush and the freckled-face girl Who is eating her heart out for you? Grey eyes that grow sadder than sunset or rain Fond heart that is ever more true Firm faith that grows firmer for watching in vain She'll wait by the sliprails for you Those grey eyes that are sadder than sunset or rain Bruised heart that is ever more true Fond faith that is firmer for trusting in vain She waits by the sliprails for you She waits by the sliprails for you Waits by the sliprails for you Just for you

There is a great Australian tradition of bush poetry that continues on to this day and what Bruce has done with Henry Lawson's masterful work is beautifully inspired and Judith solidly nails that spirit with her exquisitely sublime delivery. In a similar vein is Hugh McDonald's ''The Diamantina Drover'' superbly done by both Redgum and John Williamson. Australia is a treasure trove of brilliant music. All one has to do is seek and enjoy. jtk🍁Canada

And for me, it also brings to mind US (& Canadian?) cowboy poetry brought to song, such as "Spanish Is a Lovin' Tongue" as done by Ian & Sylvia. Fred

Who’s the producer who authorized this recording? What a long & melancholy song. It’ll never sell. Personally this is a favorite, but the rest of the world will never love it Thank you, O Internet & O rich963, for letting this jewel get out.

It's just one of the things that I really love about this band. They were genuine artists and it was always much more about the craft rather than the money. jtk

The Original Seekers were good but unexceptional until divine fate brought the voice of Judith Durham into their midst. Though it is true the Seekers needed Durham to reach their zenith, it is also true that she needed the voices of the three gentlemen to attain acclaim. Together, they create music that is divine.
