Judith Durham & the Boys' opening number in their free concert at the Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne. The audio recording from the concert was a little woolly & in mono, so I've used stereo audio from CD to augment it. If you listen on headphones, you'll be able to hear Athol's live bass on the right and his studio equivalent (along with the live harmonies, etc) on the left, which I think makes for an interesting effect without detracting from the performance.
The original audio / video is ow available on a DVD, 'The legendary TV Specials' (featuring all The Seekers' big hits and much more) is available to buy online and has spent 6 months in the Australian music DVD chart, much of the time at #1! @@rollfpeters5159Judith went to the Melbourne University Conservatorium before the Seekers became huge, around early 60s, where Judith was formaĺly studying opera singing and piano. She plays the piano masterfully too, though one rarely sees it. Maybe try the KZbin of her version of Nola for a real treat.

This is Judith Durham at her absolute best , 24 years old, full of confidence, controlling the song with her stunning vocals , it's all so effortless to her, just truly exceptional ..... as is the harmony of this wonderful group ...... she looks beautiful, she links the whole song together superbly, possesses outstanding stage presence, delivers with such power, what a peach of a singer! This is absolute perfection, and a serious contender for THE ultimate Seekers performance. You've done a fabulous job here 'Rich' , the sound is incredible.

I am a universal hater of live music, as it's often so poor, but I've never heard this song before, and it sounds like studio to me. I don't know what it is about her singing, but perhaps all her music is done in such a way it sounds like there's a slight echo to her voice, and that really adds to the pleasure. One time I went into a spanish Mass as a last resort. and they had a stronger echo on their music. I had no idea what they were singing, but the echo really added a lot.

Agree with you Martha. Loved The Seekers (Judith's voice was angelic and sweet, yet very powerful). I don't go along with today's lot at all. No talent. OK, I appreciate all singers are different, but like you I prefer good and proper singing. I am a singer and sing mostly musical theatre, and a little light opera, but also some 60s and early 70s, so I understand fully what you say Martha. Kind regards.

I know that one day soon a song shall rise; You'll hear it with the sleep still in your eyes, You'll waken to a brand new day, Can you hear bells ringin', Voices singin', Far away? A time when every man will be as one, A time to reach right out and touch the sun, Come the day. Freedom's still a thought within your mind, The fleeting thing that some may never find, It may be still a million miles away, Can you hear bells ringin', Voices singin', Far away? A time to live without doubt or fear, Welcome to the happy world that will be here Come the day. The trumpets of war will cease to blow The sound I hope that we may never know We're waiting for the day, Can you hear bells ringin', Voices singin', Far away? Lift up your voices and sing this song, Let the whole world hear it loud and strong, Can you hear bells ringin', Voices singin', Far away?

In my opinion this is Woodley’s finest effort as a song writer. And this performance? The stunning voice of Judy, the superb harmonies of the boys, the astonishing sound of those Maton guitars (especially Bruce’s 12 string) it’s all there. Judy’s green dress, the little bop,of the head and her hand gestures, she just SELLS the song. But, above all this is the impact of the song itself. What a song to start out with, the words are just awesome. Perfection.

Rich, this has great sound and is of particular value to potential new Seekers fans. Personally, I am looking forward to hearing the original audio, as you mention. Is there any chance it will have all seven songs they performed, and not just Come the Day, Morningtown, Carnival and Georgy Girl, as has been available before? This performance of "Come the Day" is exhibit A for the wonderful ability of this group in live performance. Judging from other sixties videos, there were very few groups that could come anywhere close to this kind of vocal sound live (and yes, I know there are many exciting electric guitar live recordings). Judith's amazing voice and perfect pitch really carry the song.

Everything this lady sings is absolutely note perfect and utterly wonderful. How can anyone possibly argue with Frederick Green’s comment below about Judith Durham.

As a 15 and 16 year old boy in the 1960s I was a fan. Now in my late 60s I am astonished at the clarity of voice, power and genuine enthusiasm that Judith gives to every song! I read an earlier review in which someone said that she comes over as “angelic”. Yes, I’d echo that!

I remember my parents had that album when I was six years old and we played it on a phonogram in mono... I fell in love with Judith Durham then. I also realise now that Come The Day was possibly Bruce Woodley's finest composition... a very talented songwriter.

Karen Carpenter was special, and the Carpenters a class act ..... but she couldn't quite match the brilliant vocal range of a young Judith Durham.

There are millions of female singers but there is something hidden in Durham's voice that gives these notes some unique, inexplicable power. I am sure that over the years she has caused more shivers than Covid-19.

Agreed, what it is, is the natural 'vibrato' in her voice that makes it unmistakable each time you hear it - Stevie Nicks has that same gift. Both instantly identifiable as soon as you hear them.

@@KennyTC63 i too love Stevie, a very unique voice, but i would never put her within light years of Judith. Stevie is an incredible songwriter who can sing reasonably well, has a stage presence, and as i said, quite a unique voice. Judith has an astounding voice, arguably the best ever, Judith was absolutely stunningly gorgeous without the need for heavy makeup, or yards of flesh, (which to her credit Stevie never dressed sluttish, oh , and was also gorgeous), and Judith absolutely commanded attention on stage. I do agree, both voices instantly identifiable.

I somehow missed the news of her departure, lord how that saddens me, her voice, smile, and presence echo's firmly in the corridors of my heart and will until I soulfully view that smile.
