Raised in an evangelical-lutheran household, in rural Finland, and was christian up until the age of 15. I lost the faith short and simple. Now at 22, people like Rohr, Peter Rollins, Paul Tillich, Slavoj Zizek, Kierkegaard, Levinas, I’ve relunctantly given up the atheism. I’ve realized a spiritual life is..possible. Possible is good enough for now, I’m excited to continue my intellectual and spiritual journey. Reading has changed my life, don’t let superficial social media consume you.

I love Rollins too. These people completely helped me re-understand what we call “religion.” I would also ironically include Shane Claiborne, who showed me how to live the Way better, though he doesn’t quite question things like Rohr (which my inner philosopher loves).

@@ic2063 oh my goodness no it doesn't. Have you ever learned anything about the Catholic church? Many evangelical Christians I experienced as departmentalised solidified people. They were rigid judgmental and often joyless. A decade ago a beautiful nun gave me a book to read by Father Richard Rohr. Initially I didn't understand his teachings. Now I do. I believe this has meant for me the dying of the ego. The letting the Trinity into my life. It has been very costly I was married to a CE priest who never prayed or studied the Bible. Sadly he hid behind those labels.."I'm a religious person, a good person and loyal.." as Richard describes so well. I divorced my ex after much abuse emotionally and psychologically...its been a long journey...transformation is essential in every human being.

@@Stereostupid Yes. I was raised Catholic, left for fifty years, was a Hindu for 13. Then about two years ago I returned to the Catholic Church and feel madly in love with Jesus. That love has taken me so deep to where I have had, dare I say even ecstasies in meditation. The deepest Peace, the Oneness, the excruciating , yet blissful love for everything and everyone. I live from that place. Do I believe in the Catholic doctrines of Hell or a devil or a God who punishes? Absolutely not. I KNOW now the nature of God although I don't fully know the Mystery that IS God. Mostly I know I love HIm/Her/It above all things. But I had to dive deep as you say. I cultivated the relationship. Everything he explains makes perfect sense and I say it because I have experienced all this where I thought I was dying and then woke up and it seemed like a dream another dimension, I had suffered from extreme depression and anxiety and didn’t sleep or eat for like 3 days in a row ... I’ve also had spiritual experiences ( long story) about Jesus like there’s something he’s trying to tell me. Unfortunately my ego took over again because I didn’t understand what was happening so I came back to real life, I wish I knew all this information before, I have read Elkhart tolle the power of now and stillness speaks I can relate to all that, at one point I almost didn’t believe in God anymore because my I still had all this anxiety, fear and insecurities but then I go back and think of everything that has happened to me it was too real, no dream. I would never doubt God again, the devil tried to put things in front of me that would make me want to believe it was all in my mind so I doubt God existence, I say the devil because I DO BELIEVE THE DEVIL, THE ENEMY is real, ( I’ve also had experiences) I believe in eternity heaven and hell 100% . Be careful with what you preach don’t let people think that heaven is here and there’s no hell thats against the word of God. That being said, I believe in enlightenment, the power of just now , the higher self , God lives inside of all us ( mother Theresa) everything that’s good is God ( Jesus) God is love. We are definitely NOT our minds. I pray that the Holy Spirit can give us all the wisdom and knowledge to know and live the truth. God bless.

I was raised Catholic but separated myself from the church later on as a teenager. I felt that there was something more, but I didn't know what it was. Recently, I had a very profound "meditative experience" that shifted my perspective on reality as a whole. As someone who'd taken pride as an intellectual, I simply could not comprehend the profundity of my experience. Fortunately, I came across Paul Selig and read his books that described almost exactly what Richard Rohr was explaining in the video above. For anyone seriously considering looking into this topic further, I implore you to read "I Am the Word" by Paul Selig. I must warn you that Selig claims to be a spiritual channeler, which should send any sane person's woo woo radar off, but his teachings are sound. This philosophy is by far the most meaningful idea that I've come across in years of personal research! I cannot stress the importance of this enough!

Totally agree! A beautiful explanation of the contemplative way versus religious life and the false self versus the real. Richard says, “Religion and the false self are not bad, they just are.” We don’t do better because we don’t know how. No chastisement, no blame. There is simply a higher realm in which we learn to let go and give up control so that God can see, hear, speak, and work through us. That’s radical! This is what Jesus teaching was all about, being One with the One who loves us most. Yes!

This contemplative practice and learning to center from within seems like it is not just a shift in the state of consciousness but a shift in the very stage of consciousness. And while it is enormous to move this consciousness/unconsciousness, it is not the same thing living in this shift. Rather the reorganization is a painful path to the Real and just when the transformation begins the “I” fall into this nothingness. Presence then seems to be all there is who can stabilize this stage of consciousness. I say this because the powerlessness is so close to hopelessness something from within needs to stabilize what my ego mind cannot understand. So to me, the “who” is finding this Being in death, finding the Being is in the holes of the soul, and faith still recognizes the actual support of Presence even in true craziness. Faith, maybe after all, cannot be harmed and just as the True self cannot be harmed and then this sense of separateness dissolves into Divine awareness. Thanks for this moment, this talk by Richard Rohr and the significance of your presence.

If you seek the destruction of the I for the sake of the I you are bound to find trouble..depression even madness. The correct way is the example of Christ. Is this the ultimate purpose that God created us for, to discover the existence of our true selves? To come finally to the realisation that we each of us is not our false self. And to live more and more in our true self until we come to the end of this life, so after that we’ll be equipped to live eternally with God.

I do not think so. I believe we knew who we were earth-created to be but we already existed in God. I had a NDE as a young child showing me our source. Our individuation was to clean up some human mess adults made. To shine light of love into a sadistic family. We come from pure love. Earthly life is merely for the sake of the hard-hearted people being convicted by the pure, loving heart of a child. We were love poured into a form that was the body of a child born into a corrupt family line to break the cycle of rebellion of freemasonry that has overtaken every faith.

I struggle in my relationships since experiencing an expansion beyond my little self. Contracting back into these roles feels so constricting. Being constantly self-conscious and being expected to continue to act in certain ways and do things that no longer interest me is sucking the life out of me. Going through the motions to make the other person happy feels awful. What do people do when the shift disrupts how life used to be?
@SatyaPriante4 жыл бұрын
I can suggest watching a talk by Adyashanti called "everyday Oneness", and one called "Enlightenment unfolding", they helped, along with this talk, understand very similar questions to yours. I don't know you, so only having ideas here, but in part it could be attachment to the things beyond the little self, to the absolute. There must be balance between the two worlds. I had a strong phase of not being able to relate to anything, but I could see that it was just my aversions and judgements that were isolating me, and wanting to return to a more mystical place. Very important to fully ground, I'm learning. Not for me to say in your case, but those videos might help, it's fairly common, and as Adyashanti says, not often spoken about. all the best :-)
@mikefoster52774 жыл бұрын
@Sarah Dale I'm wondering whether the key to your problem is that you're simply not yet fully established in the real Self [big "S"]? But rather, you're experiencing, as Richard mentioned in the talk, a constant 'dance' _between_ that and your former, personal self [small "s"]. And it's while you're in the mode of experiencing the small self, that the kind of negative thoughts arise with people as you described. So just know the truth and continue to remain grounded in your true center (ie. remain faithful to your real Self) and you'll find that these problems will start to become less powerful and common in your life, and eventually less bothersome for you also - they will become like water off a duck's back. :-)

One thing I feel compelled to write, I think Richard is a bit off at the start, when he speaks of prayer as simply reinforcing the ego. Now, it certainly *can* reinforce the ego, but it can (and from what I see, is meant to be) part of an experience of learning how to diminish the ego, and begin to act in true faith, as one learns that one's life is a co creation with God, whereby God invites us into true relationship. Most of this talk is quite excellent, and has helped me a great deal.

I listened to an exorcist priest in Ireland Pat is his name and he told about his experiences with the diabolical, but one thing struck me was his statement that before he became an exorcist he thought that Evil and the Devil was a concept a consequence to the human condition when it behaves wrongly, a kind of pay back for doing wrong. but he then said now i know that was wrong and the devil in fact is a real person... so i would be cautious thinking the devil is a concept of man or any other idea that takes away from the reality of Hell and that what we do and say will determine our eternity.. Heaven or Hell. Thank you and May God bless you all.

Good heavens! The devil as a living being was what I was raised to believe, but I never experienced it in myself nor in others. I learned that the devil in me is my egocentricity. I'm so sorry for you. I know what a terrible fear you live with. May you fully come to know the resurrection of Jesus Christ in you. May your nature be refined through the power of the Holy Spirit so that you may know that it is [. . . no longer you but Christ in you].

@@tubacmargi So true. Since there's only one absolute reality of God consciousness, believing anyone goes to hell would mean everyone goes, including God! Unfortunately, the fear based belief that we can ever be separated from our Source because we temporarily manifest as individuals on earth is so hard to shake due to the physical evidence keeps most people trapped in their own personal hell on earth until they ascend to the spiritual realm. The only way to break this addiction to duality thinking is to train small children to pay more attention to identifying with the unconditional love of their universal Spirit, instead of focusing on the temporary flaws of their fleeting human existence.
