The Sabbath was a day that God set aside for the Jews, that happened once a week, in which they would not work, and its purpose was so that they would meditate on God and pray to him. God made the law because relationship with him is one of the most important things ever for a Judeo-Christian; for us, if we don’t meditate on God, we will very much likely fall into sin and temptations, and that’s why God cares so much about us keeping the Sabbath.

Our Sunday school teacher would reiterate that the Jews back then were very proficient in stoning, this was their number one skill, and they were able to kill with one strike, and they would usually finish striking with a second stone just to make sure. So stoning to death was a piece of cake not work. Therefore technically it was't sin.
