Probably one of my favourite guitarists ever. Him and Tom Verlaine were musically made for each other.

That bit he told about going in the bathroom with the guitar and having time pass without even realizing it is probably recognizable to any artist or musician working on their craft. It reminds me of a thing I read in a comic strip years ago ('For Better or For Worse' by Lynn Johnston)... The grandfather had given his granddaughter a harmonica, and the mother asked him how she would be able to tell if her daughter had any talent for an instrument. He said, "When you have to yell at them to stop playing instead of yelling at them to practice", or something to that effect. I always thought that was a great line.

Richard Lloyd is genius. I just bought his book and DVD The Alchemical Guitarist, Vol. 1. Can't wait.

I don't think Richard is all that crazy; he's just coming from a different point of view. If anything, he is probably a lot more sane than most conventional straight arrow types who live like every other straight arrow that digs their nine to five trench and does whatever their television tells them to do. Richard explains it in many of his interviews: It's all about experience. The man has lived the sort of life all of us wished we could have lived, and the reason his worldview and his demeanor might seem strange is that he's the end result of living that life. I like his interviews. I really like his approach to playing guitar and the truly esoteric things he says about music. He's an interesting guy who has lived an interesting life, and rather than living that life in a puddle of excess and egotism, he chose the thoughtful and introspective route out of himself, out of the go hum world and into something more rich and strange and true than what most of us could even imagine. He's a student of Gurdjieff for goodness sake--that isn't like bring a member of the Elks Club.

I saw Television in the mid 2000s, stood pretty close to the stage, and I would never recognise this guy as being Richard Lloyd

horsedoctorman And back in the mid 2000s you probably would not have recognized him as the Richard Lloyd from Television's heyday in the 70's, when he was model-level gorgeous.
