I’ll forever remember with fondness the chaotic period of Richard’s solo helming of This Morning when Judy went off to have a hysterectomy. The brakes were completely disengaged, it was an absolute fever dream. Fortunately I was unemployed at the time so could fully enjoy several weeks of Richard free-associating and driving the crew towards nervous collapse. Halcyon days!

My dad recalled that years ago on a break time in work, he & his colleagues were watching Richard/Alan present This Morning doing a feature on testicular cancer. A model was on (with careful camerawork) in the buff, demonstrating how to check your parts. At the end of the segment Richard said thank you and shook the hand that seconds earlier had been clutching balls. They were all crying in bits 😹

This comparison actually makes more sense than you realise… Steve Coogan knew, looked up to and often jokingly imitated Tony Wilson during their time at Granada together when Tony was the big boss in Manchester. Coogan admitted that he referenced and exaggerated elements of Tony as he developed the character of Partridge. Coogan of course then went on to play Anthony H in 24 Hour Party People. Richard and Tony were very close friends and colleagues from the Granada days too, i find it hard to believe that an element of Richard’s wacky off the cuff nonchalant style is not derived directly from Tony, who was the king of all that and a magnificent, intelligent broadcaster. Richard has spoken very highly of Tony and they were around the same age. RIP Anthony H Wilson. His impact and legacy is still being felt.
