There's a saying that Alcohol often brings out a person's "True Self". In other words, Alcohol just helped bring Richard become his true self - a psychopath who derives sexual pleasure in killing people. He enjoys killing and clearly has no remorse over what he has done. He feels no guilt whatsoever. He's just pure evil, that's all. There's no excuse for it, not alcohol, not family background, no nothing. He's definitely a religious person, but he isn't finding happiness in God, he's finding happiness in Satan because it's what gives his life "meaning". He found his purpose in life, which is to rape, kill, and torture people, it's what gives him happiness. A lot of people grew up in a much more horrible family background, but still did not chose the path of evil like Richard did. The man is clearly sick in the head. He isn't insane, he's just evil.

Religious people will definitely say that the Devil had an influence. And Richard is definitely a religious person, but he served a being called "Satan". But to me, I don't blame anyone other than Richard. He ultimately chose to be evil because it's what he enjoys doing, the man is clearly sick in the head and derives sexual pleasure in killing people and then uses a non-existent being called "Satan" to justify his killings because it's what gives his sick ways a sense of "meaning". We all would like to find meaning in our lives, and Richard had found it. In his delusional mind, he is serving Satan by doing what he loves doing - killing, raping and torturing people. Blaming devils and superstitious beings are what medieval people would do, but then again, Richard has found his purpose in life, and that is killing for an entity called "Satan" so that's why even if he dies, he died a happy man knowing that he had found his calling unlike most people today who wanders the world looking for a purpose but just can't find it. It's just sad though that some people find meaning in their lives and makes them happy by killing people rather than helping people and donating to charity.

He isn't insane. Richard knows what he's doing is wrong, but he enjoys killing and loves torturing people. He couldn't even get sexually-aroused by normal sex with a normal woman, what gives him sexual high is rape and murder. That isn't insane, that is just plain sick in the head. @@goat1895 Richard isn't a genius or anything like that. His M.O is just all over the place and he doesn't act like what the police knows is a typical serial killer at the time so that's why police had a hard time catching him. Plus DNA fingerprint technology at the time was still in development and it took a while before it could be implemented. However, Richard IS smart enough to follow the news so he knows what the police knows. It didn't last though because he didn't realize that a kid saw him and the partial plate number of the car he has stolen and that lead to his arrest.
