Tuesday 18 June - after a early morning quick visit to the plot it's off to Avebury... and SHEEP!;
Friday 21 June - I pop down to the allotment to take down peelings for our compost bin, and notice for the umpteenth time a black bag on our communal plot someone else promised several times to remove - so I do it for them...;
Saturday 22 June - it's our annual Gate Sale to raise funds for the allotment association, and we end up doing rather well!

Love your gate sale event to raise fund for the allotment. You have a lot of plants for sale and raised a good amount of money, well done!

I was rather surprised by how many plants we had. 😃 This year has been such a mixture of germination and poor growth rate that I thought the number of plants would be quite limited, though clearly I was wrong!! 👍😁👍

The thing about lists is that getting everything done on them is nearly impossible. I think of them as suggestions, and don't expect completion. The hardest thing about stepping back is actually doing it. Doing what you can, when you can, is about all we can do. :) Yes, my fruit trees always drop what the tree can't handle. But the local farmers are always glad to receive dropped fruit for animal treats. Well done on the Gate Sale. :) Laters, Lad. ~ Jon in rural BC, Canada

That's interesting about apples. I don't grow fruit so had no idea that the tree rejects runt apples. We got Stemphylium fungus blown in from the south with hot, humid, wet weather. I opted to cull my 2,000!!!! onions in order to potentially spare the garlic which has maybe another week or two to go. The aim was to reduce the spore count locally. One variety of onions is 'early' so there's many bottles of pickled onions in storage but honestly, standing by the kitchen sink peeling several hundred onions did my back in. Most people, except my plot buddies, only grow onion for fresh eating. I was walking around the allotments today and all onions have severe chlorosis, broken leaves, and fungus evident. Storage onions are a 100% write off this year. We have onions in another plot that are less affected and will be for salads or cooking but not storage. I am not devastated. I am not devastated. I am not devastated. I've grown onions from seed since 2017 and this is the first time they got sick. Many people have garlic that has turned entirely yellow but so far mine are okay. I pulled one today to check. Honestly, I don't care that much about the onions, but I have gradually over the years built up a very robust hardneck garlic until I have over 300 plants. If I lose them it would be a huge tragedy. Organic seed garlic is sinfully expensive. Stemphylium kills up to 90% of onions in the southern USA like in Georgia. It's a bad bad fungus. Over the past two years we also have Leek Moth which lays its eggs in the garlic scapes. Apparently 'imported' from Poland and first detected in New Jersey in 1993. I've been monitoring and destroying, but still there are some of them around. WHY OH WHY do people feel the need to smuggle vegetable material? The Leek Moth has now spread to Toronto. People people, please, if it's illegal to import plant material, there is usually a good reason.

Avebury looks like a wonderful tranquil place. Blue sky at the plot is beautiful. It was 26 degrees here in South Wales today, the 25th. It's still 23 degrees, and it's nearly ten o'clock at night. It's hotter tomorrow and back down to 19 degrees for the rest of the week. The plants have enjoyed the bit of heat. Great upload Paul.

Hiya Paul, Thankyou for the visit. The gate sale peek glad that you had a sunny day. The Guara ? plant I think you and Richard would like lovely addition for a permanent plant in flower beds. The teasle? We used to make a hedgehog craft in school. Just planted some tomatoes in large pots 2 determinate and 3 indeterminate. Take care Luv Ontario Canada 🐝🇨🇦

I'm glad the week ended on a positive note. You are really a caring person, Paul... you actually commit time and energy to things important to you, and you are wise to balance everything so you don't spread yourself too thin. I feel like something is missing in my garden this year, I'm not sure what it is but, I think the rabbits must of ate it. 🤷‍♀️

Paul I think the apple variety is 'Beauty of Bath'. Or the 'Notaris apple', but this is an ancient Dutch apple variety. This apple also looks very similar to the Dutch apple variety Brabantse Bellefleur.
@paulsavident
@paulsavident 20 күн бұрын
Interesting, as it was though it may be an old northern European variety rather than a British one. I will look those up in my The Book of Apples. 👍😊👍

Love day at the plot. My mother used to say, if you want something done do it yourself. Since then i've been taught it's fine to ask for help. I'm less able than i was, think i should give up my plot, my pals all enthusiastically said they'd help me, have i seen any of them? No! Didn't expect much, so didn't get much.. Maybe it's time to let go, give it up, let someone else have a go xxx
