KB & VORTECH BOOSTED RESULTS! 4.6L NON PI-TO-PI UPGRADE, SUPERCHARGED 4.6L 2V. How to add boost to a 4.6L 2-valve Mustang. We started with a 1998 Non-PI 2V motor, then added TEA-ported PI Heads, Comp Cams & PI Intake. Then tested a Kenne Bell Twin Screw supercharger with Intercooler. We finished with a Vortech Centrifugal Supercharger, including a boosted cam swap.

This needs to be a reality. Needs. There have to be twice as many 4.6 2vs sitting around doing nothing that need to see some boost examples. Like at exactly what point do the rods fold, if you replace rods, when do the pistons shatter? Supposedly the crank is good for the end of the block. Purely a vote, but I suggest 4.6 from a panther because itll probably be the cheapest. Itll be iron and it will have the worst parts of almost any of them.

It's easy to complain about an engine not being able to make any power when no one ever actually TRIES to make power from it
@deanstevenson6527
@deanstevenson6527 4 жыл бұрын
Colton Robinson and RyTrapp0 : Ford learned from what it did with the Cosworth Belt Drive A and DFV and DFX and Cleveland engines, which were 3.78 and 4.38 bore spacing engines spat out from the same basic mass production transfer line. Even the Hart 850 hp alloy BDT and Cosworth alloy DFX Indy Cart 850 hp and NASCAR 351W/C engines were essentially almost a mass produced aftermarket race engine cobbled up from Fords iron engine base. The basic Mod engine is a pizza base. Ford had other engines on the 3.937 inch spacing Mod platform that made awesome ZR1 Corvette quad cam and more power. The 281 cuber iron 2V was just a door stop that sold in REAL volume and stopped people buying Celicas , Scions and spindly rod 4.7 Tundras.Fords pizza base plus approach ment the eventual alloy block 4.6, 5.0 and Ford GT 5.4 Four Valver stuff also goes right on any iron block base. Its basics are sound, the crack off powdered rods are going to be okay on a dyno, not in the real world. But remember the Holdener 1046 hp 5.8 liter turbo truck F150 engine which used stock 5.936 inch Windsor forged rods. Epic Fail! The 4.6 liter...it should have been born a 5 liter instead of a 4.6 from birth. Ford had decided to make the Teskid Cammer its lead halo engine. The single cam per bank 4.6 was born 15% down on power and torque from birth. Ford did that on purpose. It sold more of them that way.

4.6, 2 valve Smaller displacement v8 with a short stroke. These engines with a few basic improvements can have a very broad range of power and these suckers rev up. Andrew lavender has a built 2v on boost, turbo, and he beats the piss out of that car. I think he said his rev limit is right about 8,100-8,200 on pump E85 in his earlier days. I'm a huge fan of the 2v engines. Simple, very durable and they sound good. By far one of the best budget engines to work with for both simplicity and they are tough. Definitely do a big bang 4.6, but keep it as budget minded as possible as that's why guys buy these because they're so inexpensive and easy to find. Let's see what kind of numbers you can get out of them before the rods, pistons, bearings or block, maybe a slurry of all of the above. Lol

The reason they made so many of the 2V engines is because they run for ever if you don't mess with them. As long as the intake manifold doesn't leak, unmolested 2Vs will run for well over 150,000 miles
@davelowets
@davelowets 4 күн бұрын
150,000 isn't even that much... I've had G.M. 3800's that went well into the 300,000+ range. Next time you are at a boneyard, take a look at the odometers of the 3800 cars you see there. You'll see HIGH miles on most of them. Usually the car has rusted apart around the engine, or has been in a crash, and that is why it's there.

One of the 2V's major design flaws was the plastic coolant crossover. Since the timing chain covers block the front of the engine, Ford couldn't move the crossover down into the water pump casting, as GM did with the Gen 3 (LS). This is why the LS has 2 coolant holes on each leg of the water pump - the top ones function as the crossover since those 2 holes make 90 degree angles once in the block to connect the head water passages. Random factoid....

Old video I know, but thanks. I'm walking through your Mod-motor playlist now. IMO the SN95 Mustang is the place to be right now for a cheap, vintage performance car. It's at the right point in the depreciation curve, Fox-bodies are already headed up. The SN95 is a significant improvement over the Fox in every way except the controversial styling (which I happen to like) and the limited power of the 4.6L 2V engine. The 4V engined models are never going to get into the "cheap" category, so that leaves figuring out how to make power with the 2V.

I traded in my 99 Expedition with 380k miles on it. The only thing wrong with it was the transmission had started to slip pretty bad. Would have liked a little more power when in the mountains when it was loaded down with friends and gear, but it always got me there. I miss that vehicle a lot.

My wife’s 2005 exploder 4.6 takes barely a touch of the throttle and it takes off almost the same as full throttle. Ferd has some whacked throttle response tuning. I’d seriously consider heads and a cam to bring it to the NA numbers you found, but the trans would pack its lunch the first day. Lol. Cool video - thanks!

I've heard on forums the rods are good to 600 (depending on tune and detonation of course) and I'd love to see where they outright fail. You pushed past 600 already so now I'm curious. Blowers are harder on rods than a turbo for a given horsepower too, no?

I’m a HUGE 2v fan. Always loved the New Edge look. They might not have had crazy HP numbers out of the box, but it takes guys like you to show what they are really capable of. I’ve always considered the 4.6 2v to be the best sounding V8. Again that’s my own opinion. But I have always loved the sound of them. They’re so raw. I have an 06 4.0 V6 S197 Premium. And i want to do a swap. I’m sick of seeing the “Coyote” swap and have decided to do something completely unheard of.. I’m building a Procharged 4.6 2v. Trickflow heads just arrived. Block is currently being machined and I’m building it from the ground up paired to a T56 6Speed out of an ‘04 Cobra. Absolutely can’t wait for the spring. I’ll create videos of the swap. But there’s not much information at all regarding it. Fingers crossed. But I know I’ll be able to do this.

Yes Sir! Great work. Like you said...most likely more 4.6 2v out there. So im sure this appeals to those masses...including me. Not sure why so many people hate or look down on the 2v. Obviously it can easily be made into a monster. Over 600 hp will certainly take care of any stock coyote or LS.

Its not that they are limited to 400hp, it can make much more its just a mattter of how long they stay together. The 4.6 blocks are pretty bulletproof but the 5.0 block itself will literally split down the intake valley with a good amount of power going through it. The factory block its self is very weak. Ask me how i know lol.

Ya it was sarcasm even roadkill made like 700hp on a stock block turbo 5.0 it would be interesting like the LS series to see where and what would cause the failure when you remove as many variables as possible
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 4 жыл бұрын
@@pyric But what kind of info do you expect to get out of such a test? 5.0l blocks have split anywhere from 500HP up - after 20+ passes at the drag strip Making a single 1000HP dyno pull doesn't prove anything more than that specific engine could hold 1000HP for 1 pull. But engines aren't used that way; not outside of Top Fuel anyway. Even the most ardent LSx fanboys consider "around 1000HP" to be the limit, in spite of Holdener's 1500HP bullet. The 'big bang' tests aren't irrelevant, but the information that is gained from them is absolutely context specific.

I won a trip up to the Romeo plant from Ford in the early 90s. They were ramping up to a million 4.6's a year I believe. They told us that in durability tests the 4.6 would way outlast the 5.0. I've got a 4v in a 96 Mark VIII with 277k (daily driver 90 miles for work daily), a 2005 Marquis with 265k and had to other 94 Vics with over 260k without failure (put valve seals on one of them though).

I've been saying for years that I believe the 4.6 2v an handle more that what people say. Everyone slaps forced induction on with no engine mods, and max boost and pop goes the weasel, it's a recipe for disaster. Put supporting mods in place first to make a more efficient engine, then run lower boost. Less is more. Higher combustion chamber pressures (and temps) via boost will certainly wreak havoc on any engine. The proof is in that one dyno graph with the stock vs. aftermarket cam... those gains on an n/a engine are unheard of, but in a boosted application it proves what I've thought all along. A good tune and intercooler with an icebox and you'll be seeing ridiculous numbers I bet.

Can always go the turbo route instead of the blower to keep the budget reasonable, size your turbo accordingly and you can have gobs of torque like a borgwarner S362 would spool up instantly and make over 600 whp.

First off . These motors are old . So parts are much much cheaper now . Just like the ls . You need to do stuff to make power. You just dont make 4 or 500hp by taking the ls out of a truck and putting it a craparo . Ask me how i know . I've worked on both . At the 500hp rage . It was about the same price . Ls needed head work . Cam , intake work or swap , TB, Headers . And tune up . Guess what . Same thing with the 4.6 .

A blower costs the same for a mod motor as it does for an LS - just like a turbo costs the same for a mod motor as it does for an LS He wasn't even running the smallest pulley - skip the cams & heads(they aren't exactly a 'huge' improvement, like the Trick Flow 2v heads would be) and crank the boost to the moon if you're really such a broke ass. Just like what you would do to an LS. Now, go ahead and tell me how much a junkyard 2v costs vs a junkyard LS - I bet I know which one is cheaper... ...so, where's all the extra expense then? Use your head, this is basic stuff
