Hey Richard, two things- in Stroud, Glos, there used to be this thing called the Stroud pound. Later I think it was called Letts. It was local trading money for people to do jobs for each other or sell to each other. It couldn’t be taxed. Now, I’m in a food Co-op in London. We all pay a fiver a week and get fruit, vegetables, pulses, rice and other things, wholesale between us. We also get given random short dated food, which gets divided up and added to the food box. It makes eating and living cheaper again. We don’t have much choice about what we get but we can google the things we’ve got and see what we can make from it. We also have a community garden for growing some vegetables. It’s really bringing the community together.

@@annawinters4346 Hi there, I just googled the Bradbury pound as I’d only heard of it once, probably, on Richard’s youtube here. I also googled the Stroud pound, or LETS ( where I saw I previously spelled it wrong). I read that the Bradbury pound was issued by the treasury in response to a government request to save gold bullion. Differently, the Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS) was and can still be a local currency for and by the local community. I expect there’s more info online if you’re interested in knowing more.

There's nothing wrong with the concept of banks or money, in fact in some form or another they are necessary for trade, the problem is having a central bank with the power to produce money out of nothing and put it in the hands of a few. Back in the day when banks were decentralised (local) the amount of money a bank had notes for would theoretically be matched by the amount of silver and gold in the vaults. In the case of Bitcoin the value lays in the fact there is only a finite amount that can and will ever be produced, unlike fiat currencies but more like gold and silver. Another similarity between Bitcoin and precious metals is that they are both stores of energy to be used cashed out at a later date, with gold and silver it's the energy it takes to get it out of the ground and process the metals and with bitcoin it's the energy needed to do the number crunching(mining) to produce a Bitcoin. As with the early banks, the benefit of Bitcoin, Litecoin and Digibyte to name a few are decentralised and can't be controlled at the mining stage by governments. CBDC's won't be decentralised and pretty much mirror the present corrupt banking system but with controls on spending already programmed in, what could possibly go wrong?
@parrotshootist3004
@parrotshootist3004 11 ай бұрын
the mining stage for gold nor bitcoin change the wealth distribution issues. 0.4% holds about 60%, around 2% holds ~80%. The bottom 90% own little Bitcoin. It holds value not due to its finite quality but because people, with wealth, value it. If no one but the bottom 20% of wealth holders considered it, how much faith and value could go behind it? Issueance isn't the only problem. Excess of fiat wealth just transfers. In the short-medium term its a potential great opportunity, because mining also mints it.

The money supply, or currency in existence for a country could be stable and kept circulating within that economy. However the main 'problem' with the current system is that the currencies are created temporarily at interest, so that the whole economy is in an increasing state of indebtedness. Every loan repaid, takes that currency out of circulation until another loan is made.

Bitcoin is a surveillance coin. Post your wallet address and everyone can track it, we can see how much you've got and how you spend it. Although not centralised, transactions can and are censored and therefore it is not fungible. It's a controllers wet dream. With a finite supply, in the future there will be no incentive to secure the network, this is a major problem for bitcoin. Not to mention the fees to use it as currency.

What you are essentially proposing is barter - a system of exchange in which participants in a transaction directly exchange goods or services for other goods or services without using a medium of exchange, such as money. I live in a farming community and barter here is commonplace. For example, 1 cord of firewood logs = 4 large round bales of hay = shoeing 2 horses = 20 metres of sheep fencing supplied and erected = 220 organic duck eggs = 1 live prime fat lamb = 6 hours general labour. The actual rate of exchange is obviously negotiable, but haggling can be part of the fun. It still doesn't sort out the problem of paying your council tax, car insurance, electricity bill or the like but it can have a significant part to play in the household economy.

My dad was a bricklayer and low paid at that time, for the skill. He said it was the lowest paid skill on a building site. And iff it hadn't been for that garden we would have really struggled. The house had been passed down from his parents so it wasn't one that was bought by my parents. I wish I had a decent garden now but when they died the share out wasn't enough to make a difference. Convert your currency into assets, gold,silver,copper,tools,land (problem here). Must be easily transportable and easily hidden from prying eyes. The problem with land is that it is a fixed unmovable asset. The problem with the others is their desirability when cash is not usable anymore. How do you decide on exchange and for what? The only solution I can think of is to have government that lives within its means and ONLY SERVES THE PEOPLE. Then you can have a currency backed by gold/silver/land and know it is actually worth something and is a private means of legal exchange.

Yes, as they were generally from, or of, farming communities. I have gold and I won't be starting a retirement fund with my bank. In Belgium there was quite a scandal during the banking crisis where people realised that the bank had actually invested their retirement savings in the stock market instead of just providing low risk interest. Most saving account recovered after a long period of time though. But even then, with the mega inflation, the value of savings evaporates, plus the bank gets rich from doing nothing. You simply have to invest in gold or other metals, or real estate that you can flip.

The problem with fiat currency is that it can be counterfeited by banksters. It is made by creating debt out of thin air. This way parasitic governments can borrow money and spend it on whatever they want while the people have to take care of the debt. Your bankdeposits and cashreserves also get depleted by this activity. People should create communities and do business paying with crypto, gold or anything else that cant be counterfeited and where the transactions are private, similar to what they do in private clubs.

There is so many obstacles on the road to real money. There is an credible transformation of the “means of payment” ahead. Not only value is changing but also the form of it. The money form is becoming 100% real and touchless. The abundance of money is turning into scarce money. The world is very slowly choosing BTC Bitcoin. The trick is to choose and use the most decentralized form of it. Without personal research and reassurance many people will go astray. Brilliant comparison to the video technology Richard, the VHS and the Betacam, but this time people will not go with the imposed technology, this time they have to choose for themselves.

I was telling my colleagues back in the seventies, that seeing how money was in extremely short supply for workers and yet abundant for the idle, we ought to abandon it as a form of reward for our extreme efforts. For example, I could say to my employer, "This week you will provide me with a car". The next week, it could be a different item, groceries furniture, white goods, anything at all. There is no need for a controlled medium of exchange. There is no need for banks,no need for a government, or any other institution that accommodates rich idle southerners. None of them could see my point, and so remained slavery unto death. Thank you for catching up with me after more than fifty years.

Money should have these properties. 1) Intrinsic value no matter what the cause of that is, be it a) stability against oxidation (endowing longevity to coated/adorned objects etc) b) colour and lustre c) A resource (catalytic or a chemical reactant), food to keep you alive, shelter even. 2) Rarity - to make it worthwhile having and requires effort to get it - mining it or earning it by labour or by exchange for other valuable goods. 3) Can store value (at zero or near-zero cost) 4) Be easily portable. 5) Facilitate anonymous trade. The balance of those things gives money its value. When these categories are eroded or enhanced then the object representing money has a value that changes. Wheat, barley, sugar, rice, dates. They can act as money they have value (Intrinsic value = food obviously), they are reasonable common so lose out on value here, but can require reasonable amounts of effort to produce them but can can last for a reasonable amount of time hence have some storage capacity and can be traded without necessarily leaving a record. Meat can be used as money but it can be expensive to produce it and it has low storage value (freezing and chilling are costly, smoking / salting generally preserving meat them offsets this perhaps) but in some parts can be rare. That is what money is. As can be solver coins even copper coins. That is the best form of money there is. Those criteria are what makes money and Gold and Platinum are at the top end of this followed by silver, then other metals in the form of coinage. Gold/Silver is pretty unbeatable.

Richard, when you have the guest on to discuss Bitcoin, you should consider hosting a livestream with audience participation via zoom/phone call-in. The issue with hosting long-form cryptocurrency interviews is similar to the law interviews, where no-one can even agree upon "what is the definition of Common Law?" except in the crypto-debate the participants don't even agree upon the concept/definition of "Law" (e.g. "what is crypto?").

We are slowly moving into a currency free society, although many of us will not live to see this in its developed form. First, we must recognize that the system of currencies, whatever form that they present, is a facade. This does not determine our worthiness as human beings. This is so engrained in our psyche that it will take time to unravel it all. Abundance exists in many forms--human creativity and ingenuity is at the top of the list. We have been stifled for so long and it is time to move out of the containers and create our own destiny. I have no doubt that this will be achieved. A new world awaits. We are experiencing the final dissolution of the old to make room for the new. Are we ready?
