Richmond, Virginia is a fascinating city. As the capital of Virginia and the former capital of the Confederacy, the city has a lot of interesting history and is unique today. I have visited the city a couple times over the past few years and have really enjoyed my experiences there. In this series I cover a city's history, population, skyline and a few things that make the city unique. Thanks for watching: Richmond Overview | An informative introduction to Richmond, Virginia.

I relocated from Brooklyn to RVA during the pandemic three years ago and it was the best move I ever made. I consciously sought out a vibrant medium sized city with a thriving live music & arts scene. Also a big foodie city! And also a much lower cost of living.

Unlike most states, cities in Virginia, like Richmond, are independent of their surrounding counties. Many growing cities around the country rely on people moving into the city limits and by annexation of surrounding county land; Richmond on the other hand has been barred by the state legislature from any further annexation and it's current city limit has not changed since 1970. For the city of Richmond to grow in population it depends solely on people moving into the existing city limits. Richmond is a great city, I lived there for 30 years.

I appreciate that you are doing smaller cities like Richmond. A lot of these smaller cities are really glossed over and forgotten about. It's really a shame, because they have a lot to offer. I'm tired of hearing about New York, LA, Chicago, Boston, etc. These cities already have way too much press about them. I want to learn about all the small and midsize cities in the US. Those are really interesting in my opinion. Thanks for your video 🙏

As a young professional living here, I can confirm that Richmond is one of the hidden gems still around in our country when it comes to medium sized cities. The amount of development & capital investment that has happened in the last year is incredible. The secret is getting out and people are just starting to move here in high numbers. We have a ton of breweries, wineries, incredible food scene, & an outdoors orientated community with endless opportunity for recreation. RVA is the perfect blend of large city amenities with a medium city feel & true culture/community. All of the development that is happening reminds me of early days Austin before it blew up. Happy to be here early!
@techtidbits7594

I doubt it's going to blow up like Austin. That's in Texas, and Texas has been exploding with population in general. Virginia is not going to get a huge population the way Texas and Florida have. That being said, I do believe the Richmond region will continue to grow, and it may become the fastest growing part of Virginia. The cost of living and congestion of Northern Virginia has become unbearable for many people. Richmond presents many of the same amenities you could get in NOVA/DC with a much lower cost of living. Also remote work changes the game too.

I have visited Richmond several times and really enjoyed it. I think that this is a very insightful look into the city, although I do recommend visiting Agecroft Hall - a relocated Tudor manor on the banks of the James River. I have been watching you channel for over a year now and in that time is has grown around 20 times larger. I always look forward to your videos and I think this might be my favorite one! Great job!

If you're interested in more history the surrounding towns just outside the city limits are chock full of it. Midlothian, southwest of Richmond, has the first coal mines in the western hemisphere, The Grove Coal Mines. As well as the first railroad in the US, a gravity railroad that runs from the Grove Mine to Midlothian Turnpike, the first turnpike in the country. That turnpike ran from the mines east to Manchester City, the urban area on the south side of the James river right across from Richmond. While Richmond was developing as a city, Manchester City was as well becoming one of the largest coal exporters in the Americas and being a major contributing factor to the success of Richmond as a trade and finance hub for the south. Richmond sits on the James River but the river hits a fall line upstream just past the city itself, meaning ships can't go further up river past Richmond, making it a prime location for trade and commerce in the late 1600s and onward. The village of Midlothian is one of the oldest still populated towns in the nation and there's a shop on Midlothian turnpike that is the oldest standing structure in the town itself, at 150 years old. Each of the surrounding counties' major thoroughfares are dotted with historic sign markers with multiple historic sites and buildings littering the towns of the Greater Richmond Area. A true hotspot for history nerds.

Very interesting video, and I actually learned something. So much so that I liked, subscribed, and hit the notification bell to your channel... I didn't realize Richmond metro is as large as it is and had no idea it's larger than the Louisville metro. I thought Richmond city/metro was about the size of Lexington, Kentucky city/metro. And I didn't realize Edgar Allen Poe grew up in Richmond. I always associated him with Baltimore. Considering Richmond's history, I bet there are lots of ghost stories in and around Richmond.

I really enjoy your videos, and always look forward to the next one! When it comes to ranking skylines, I believe your formula is pretty sound. However, it doesn’t account for some anomalies. In cities like San Diego, for example, the density of buildings helps make up for a lack of height. I think the same could be said for Richmond. While it doesn’t over-perform for a metro its size, it certainly doesn’t under perform. It packs a pretty decent punch (much like your videos). Meanwhile, skylines like OKC are ranked too high because of one building that awkwardly dwarfs the rest of the skyline.
@CityGeek
@CityGeek Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! And thanks for the thoughtful comment! And yes it is a quick and dirty metric to compare skylines by their height and certainly shouldn’t be the only consideration when ranking skylines. My next video will actually be my first video where I rank skylines by my own preference rather than by some objective measurable.

Richmond is a nice city to visit. It's pretty clean, had lots of history to explore and a good food scene. One thing they really should invest in is public transit. One thing that this overlooks, understandably, is the ever evolving cultural environment of Richmond ("RVA", in the local lingo). VCU is a major (and comparatively inexpensive) university right in the middle of town, from whose students and alumni the community has been re-shaped by all sorts of art activities, underground-level music, community involvement and activism, a continuing youth culture, a wide range of forward-looking restaurants, and much more. In addition, Richmond's large and diverse population of African-Americans has begun to come into its own, as the bitter legacy of slavery and Jim Crow has been lessening (but of course is still felt). RVA is a multi-dimensional city with a wide-open future.

I was just wondering the other day when you were going to do a video on our city. The metro population is actually over 1.3 million now and growing rapidly. Some fun facts about RVA: - It's in the top 3 most tatooed cities in the US. - It doesn't have a full beltway like most other cities. (Milage Mike did a whole video on this topic recently) - RVA bumper stickers are how we show pride in and represent our city. It's everywhere. - There's a thriving art and ever evolving foodie scene here. - It's home to 1 of the 12 federal reserve banks in the US. - It's part of the Mid-Atlantic region of the US.

Richmond is my fav of those 3 cities in Mid-Atlantic. Baltimore needs to get crime just under some sort of control, DC is basically a Neighborhood of Manhattan that fell off and somehow ended up in Maryland (Stone row houses, stoops/etc). Baltimore/DC are layed out perfectly for a city design. Baltimore feels so poor, in ATL, NYC, Newark, Philly and Chicago there is money in the hoods. Baltimore has bad heroin problems, worst corruption I seen hands down. It has a lot of abandonment that is non salvageable. Nyc and Philly have high enough density to refill way quicker. Richmond is unique, it has a growing Econ, it is extremely dangerous (it’s like Baltimore except it has a better downtown and about half as many no go zones). I worked in Richmond and it’s a fair place for cost. I made $30 as a Carpenter and there was work all year unlike NYC, which basically freezes for 5 months. I would not like to live in that part of USA, but if I had to, Richmond would be my choice.

@heretustay
@heretustay 9 ай бұрын
"The crime has gotten so bad" and "many of the small businesses were squeezed out" are antithetical statements in Richmond. And only one is true. As gentrification and corporatization of the major neighborhoods of the city has skyrocketed over the last 3 years, due to the influx of upper-middle class white yuppies (mostly from the northeast), lower income communities have been displaced to nearly fully outside of the city limits. Crime in the city is down, and many neighborhoods, through gentrification, have been made safer. As this has happened, it has also increased rents across the entire city, pricing out most mom-and-pops and small businesses that had been a part of their communities for decades. See Cary Town, Church Hill, Manchester, and Shockoe, to name the most affected by this. Not to mention the bear complete rebuilding of Scott's Addition into what is basically a new city, in and of itself. Even though your reasons are wrong though, I would still say stay away: I don't want anymore development and money flowing into this town. Its changed enough already. So please do stay away.

I currently live in RVA its not really that great imo. The best part is being close to DC where there is stuff to do. There monument avenue was pretty special but now its just looks like a bombed out sight with ugly graffiti. Since being the capital of the confederacy is the most unique thing about the city RVA seems to be having a hard time finding a unique identity. There is some good places to go but having lived in the Triangle as well (Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill), you can see why it is growing so much faster, as there is a lot more interesting things going on there for a similar sizes metro. Also a small thing too many but I cant believe the Nordstrom's has been gone from our only premier shopping area and it just still empty with not even any "plans" to make it into a food hall or something that other cooler cities would do. The art museum is pretty cool and the nature is nice but the park system is horrible compared to the Triangle, aside from the riverwalk (which has alot of untapped potential, but hopefully the new nature center is cool).

@@heretustay Did not know monument avenue is in the suburbs. I enjoy Church Hill to an extent, but it is small and so close to bad areas. Shockoe bottom has some cool places but its just generally a crappy area. I like the river walk (Rockets Landing - Browns Island) and the Maymont. Cary town is okay but pretty run down for being such a hip area. Scotts Additions has cool breweries and restaurants but Richmond has not tried to make it an actually nice to walk around cohesive neighborhood. TBH the food in Short Pump is very mediocre compared to those areas. Raleigh, has great offerings spread from downtown to its suburbs which is nice.

You packed some terrific information into 5:30. Seemed like a ten minute video! Wow! You had me scrambling to find the home of Virginia Tech since I was convinced it was in Richmond! Nope. In my mind, Richmond is still so connected to the Civil War era that it was good to see other aspects of this city on your video. A modern U.S. city established in the 1600s just blows my mind. Here in Texas, San Antonio goes back to the Spanish missions of 1720. I thought that was old. 🕰🫢. Thanks for another great year of cities. I rewatch them often to enjoy comparing skylines. @@JhonnyBoi bud. most nfl teams do summer training in far further off places than a two hour commute from their home base 😂 they just wanted an easy deal, some fans to crowd the gates and pay for tickets, and didn't care about wasting our time and money to get it. again, typical DC behavior 🤷‍♂️

Your video analysis on Richmond or any other city really doesn't make any sense, Been to almost every state, and a lot of cities have tall buildings but have no character, Richmond VA can run circles around many if them, i.e. Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas, Charleston SC, the list is greater. Travel more, Bud. Get out.

Yeah Richmond has taller buildings than Arlington so it depends on how heavily you weight fact that when comparing them. I do like Arlington skyline as well though. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it!

@@CityGeek yeah but that’s because there’s a height limit (400 ft) which Arlington has several at that height. Just a few feet shorter than Richmond. But Arlington has several skylines where Richmond only has 1.

Richmond is quickly descending into the type of dangerous slum that all blue-controlled cities become. No matter where you are in the city, you're never more than five minutes away from the nearest ghetto. Sometimes the ghetto even comes to you.
@heretustay
@heretustay 9 ай бұрын
you have NO idea what you are talking about 😂 Richmond's rapid gentrification is pushing lower income communities to the borders and farther, replacing them with boring white yuppies from up north who will pay 50% to 100% the legitimate cost of rent or home prices to take up space in an ever more congested mid ass little city. I've been here since the 90's, when we were competing with Compton for "murder capital of America." you know absolutely NOTHING about this city
