I fought on the Riddick Bowe Larry Donald undercard at Caesar's palace in 95'. After the weigh in my coach and I sat to eat at a big table with all the fighters and Eddie Futch sat across from us. Everytime he spoke the whole place went quiet. A real legend of the sport. 🥊🙏

@@subzfitprelim fighters weigh in much earlier than main event fighters. A big show like that is like an amateur show. Main event is at 9 and the show starts at 4pm so there are lots of bouts before the main card. I was the swing bout. That means if the main event ends early my fight would have been televised and I would get more money. But larry Donald got a good chin so no bonus.

Futch wanted Roach to retire after Hogan defeat, Roach dropped him, lost a couple of more fights and got Parkinson's. Futch wanted Montell to employ different tactic in Roy Jones rematch, Montell dropped Futch and got knocked out in round 1. Almost everyone who didn't listen to Futch's voice of reason and dropped him for some yes men paid heavy price

Eddie Futch knew that it was extremely important for his fighters to have a good jab, and avoid as many punches as possible. Futch was also a master at analyzing a fighter's strengths and weaknesses. Futch would then devise a plan to exploit the opponent's weaknesses. That's how Ken Norton beat Ali. Thanks for another great video!

Eddie Futch is the only man to beat Muhammad Ali twice. First, with Frazier, using a submarine attack (coming under Ali and hooking under Ali's jab). Then with Norton, Futch trained him to out-jab Ali, a strategy that Ali could never figure out. Of course, neither fighter beat Ali in his prime, but you can't dispute the results. Futch was the man who out-thought Ali and Angelo Dundee.

@B45 They fought three times. Norton won the the first fight. Ali won the second and third. There was controversy with the third fight that took place at Yankee Stadium (many fans thought Norton won), but Ali got the decision and kept the title. That happened to Joe Louis too, when he fought Joe Walcott. Louis won a fight fans thought he actually lost, but the record says otherwise.

@B45 That third fight was the first time we heard the excuse, "you have to knock down the champion to get the decision." It was a silly line used by Ali's camp, but for years after, other fighters and boxing people went by the rule the champion gets the benefit of the doubt in any close decision.

@almarcel7764 Sorry, that is not the book on the March 1971 fight. Most fight fans agree Ali took the Frazier fight too soon (he had no choice as the Supreme Court verdict was due in June and it might have put him in jail). In Ali's first fight after the 3 1/2 year exile, he looked crisp against Jerry Quarry with a 3rd Round TKO. No offense to Quarry, a great fighter, but he was too small to give Ali a good workout. The second bout with Bonavena should have been viewed as a warning. Ali had never been tagged as much during his prime 1965-67, as Bonavena had Ali out on his feet a couple of times. The shocking TKO in the 15th gave Ali the wrong message that he was ready for the Mack truck that was Joe Frazier. For the first few rounds, Ali peppered Joe, whose face started to bloat by the 4th. But Frazier's pressure wore Ali down and in the middle rounds Ali was gassed and needed to rest on the ropes. The 15th Round knockdown happened as much from fatigue as it was from the power in the blow. You can tell by the way Ali bounced back to his feet and continued boxing. The second fight, where Ali got his wind back, is more indicative of their skills, but neither by then was as good as they were. Ali took some Frazier bombs, but avoided most, unlike the 71 bout where Frazier wore him out. Nobody is knocking Frazier, we are watching the fights and judging them as best we can.

Mr Futch demanded top salary, one reason many (Bob Biron/Art Rivkin/Mr Shulman) dropped him from Ken Norton’s corner. Same was true for Moochie and Ron Lyle. Futch knew his value as well as tough on money. Rift between Mr Futch and Rock Newman (Bowe) was similar except Futch saw Newman was using Bowe as a tool for Rocks political aspirations. Mr Futch was a boxing genius. Much enjoyed this Rich!

Eddie Futch was a boxing trainer FAR ahead of time. The way he could analyze boxers, the way he could calculate boxing elements and strategies is still only rivaled by a select few trainers, including the also late-great Emanuel Steward. The man have worked with some of the greatest boxers ever and been involved in the corner by some of the biggest matches of all times. Only the deepest of respect !!!

With all due respect Eddie was not far ahead of his time Jack Blackburn taught Joe Louis Charlie Goldman MADE Rocky Marciano Harry Wiley was one of a few who made Ray Robinson Ray Arcel. I had a late friend who was a HW contender in the 60’s told me in the basement of Jack Dempseys restaurant Ray Arcel worked with him for about two hours and he learned more from Ray than everything he had learned to that time. Eddie certainly was a great trainer teacher along with these guys. The list is long

Rich I am in awe of your work on this. I know you put a lot into this one. While all of this is subjective there have been some really fantastic managers and trainers. Kronk gym leader Steward and Freddie Roach have all benefited from Futch. While promoters make the most money and build empires plus control the tv rights, organizations and fighters, it is the trainers that instill habits and teach lifestyle. His teaching of the jab could be bottled and still taught today. Futch took Norton to a level and taught him things that he used in all 3 fights. His insights about changing levels and responding to repetitive habits like dropping hands and so forth with little to no film like today lead to a coaching tree that by boxing standards is Saban like... I am glad to see the focus on this part of boxing. Trainers for the most part are the good guys in boxing (Panama Lewis excluded). Futch did make 2 decisions I disagreed with, but he was protecting one fighter and can't argue with that. He should not have sent Bobick into the Norton fight and not have him warned up. It was not like Norton was a fast starter for the most part anyway (see Cooney fight). I do think Frazier could have gone out for the 15th against Ali. However, protecting your guy is your main job. 1st ballot hall of famer. Rich as always amazing KO, ESPN or any boxing publication should snap up your work and make you rich for the job you do. I was a friend of Lee Mulrooney of Midwest Publicity Company in Detroit. Midwest Publicity Company handled the boxing publicity for Detroit's Olympia Stadium. Mulrooney had the highest regard for Futch but said that the corrupt stooges of the International Boxing Club prevented Eddie from getting regular work there so he relocated.
