One possible reason would be that the baby Morty is Rick's original Morty, it might have something to do with the Morty abandoned with that monster in the intro, there is a fan theory that states it's Evil Morty and he somehow survived and wanted to get revenge on Rick. Here is a quote from the wiki: At the end of "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind" Rick C-137 warns his Morty about becoming too smart for his own good, and he defers on explaining that statement to Morty until he is older, but it appears to be a veiled reference to the potential for Mortys to go rogue like the Evil Morty did.

Cookieboy70 I don't think he actually can, though. Human nature is the one thing Rick always fail to do! And, sure, he did do it a few times, but always with disastrous end results (the love potion, Tiny Rick, Pickle Rick), and he always have to either bring things back the way human nature actually is or change universe. Hence why I say he can't really turn people into snakes. I mean, he could, but that would backfire quickly.

I think the Smith family storyline was partly about how quick people might be to abandon these centuries-old beliefs for something tangible. It also says how people are willing to turn a blind eye to injustice in a system as long as they benefit ("That's none of our business as long as Summer is thriving." -Beth). In the episode commentary, the creators and writers said how hard it was to braid the cause and effect between Rick and Morty's actions, the Cromulons' reactions, and then the people's reactions to the Cromulons. And for me, the particle beam-snake watch was another correlation/causation bit. I wasn't a huge fan of this episode at first (less laughs, more head-y (pun-intended)), but now I really appreciate the effort and themes. And it solidified how excellent the writing is on the show.
