Usually I don't like most adult cartoons but Rick and Morty is one of the few adult animated shows I enjoy, and with good reasons. What I think makes R+M such a great show is that it's more experimental and unique in it's nature and isn't a South Park/Family Guy clone or isn't some bizarre postmodernist art piece (though R+M can be bizarre in it's own right, but in a good way). I'd say Rick and Morty is somewhere between the two. I think one of the main reasons I like this show is because of the dynamic between the two main characters, to which in a typical adult cartoon all the characters would just be assholes for the sake of being assholes, while here, Rick's actions may seem questionable but he clearly has good intentions, and Morty is almost always there to call Rick out for his actions, and how they play off each other so well. If anything, I'd like to say that R+M is the adult equivalent of Adventure Time with a bit of Regular Show, The Simpsons and Futurama spiced in. Not surprised you don't like Beth and Jerry and their off-and-on marriage either, in fact, I don't think anyone does, since I also feel it got really bad in Season 2 and hope it gets toned down in Season 3 (it was tolerable in Season 1 but got in my nerves in Season 2). Also interesting you compared Jerry to Cyril Figgis from Archer, because both are voiced by the same person (Chris Parnell, who also voices that box on the Progressive Insurance commercials). There are only a few episodes where Beth and Jerry's dynamic works, and most of the time it's if Summer gets involved in their sub-plots (such as in "Rixty Minutes" or "Get Schwifty"). In season 2 their constant fighting also reeks of having elements of flanderization. Overall, I really wish there were more adult cartoons like Rick and Morty, since it's getting really tiresome to see every adult cartoon either copy other adult cartoons (namely South Park and Family Guy) or try too hard to be "adult" and end up being cringe-worthy from over-relying on shock value as a result (like Drawn Together or Brickleberry). I'm really excited for Season 3 myself.

Bipolar Bear Agreed, most adult cartoons have the characters act like jerks for the sake of them acting like jerks, while Rick and Morty's characters actually feel fleshed out. The only characters I don't like are, surprise surprise, Beth and Jerry, at least when they are together for most of an episode. ***** Seems like Chris Parnell likes voicing these kinds of characters
@parforet8 жыл бұрын
+Masterge77 Also most adult cartoons try too hard to be edgy or be the next Simpsons, South Park, or Family Guy but they fail.
@Masterge778 жыл бұрын
Bipolar Bear I think I know why, and it's because of the common conception that animation is strictly made for children, to which the makers of adult cartoons basically make the show as edgy as possible and go "Look at what WE can do that you can't!", and that's what I think is causing adult animation to be so stagnant and behind. This is one of the main reasons I think Rick and Morty has become so popular and successful, because it doesn't fall into the stereotypes that most adult cartoons are notorious for and tries to be different.
@InvaderZim8978 жыл бұрын
Jerry is actually my favorite character, because at least for an animated show, I think he is a lot more realistic than a lot of the other dad characters that fit his mold. He's stupid and pathetic in a believable way whereas characters like Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin are cartoonishly stupid in a way that's too exaggerated to be relatable.
@Gravitynaut8 жыл бұрын
I respect your opinion about Jerry and Beth, but I have to disagree. Their characters and relationships are kinda what ground the show, making the wacky sci-fi stuff continue to feel fresh after using it so much. Also, their relationship brings some of the show's most interesting and heartfelt moments. Jerry is tough nut to crack. On one hand, he is that standard dumb dad character, but on the other, it's not simply accepted in the reality the show takes place in. He's pathetic, and not only does everyone else know this, but he does too, and he partially hates himself for it. It's implied that he has the capacity to really become a better person under the right circumstances, but his own self-depreciation, as well as other factors, stop him. He's a character that I started out feeling bad for, but slowly began to hate (in the context of the show, as in he's a deplorable person) as it went on. Interdimensional Cable II really shows how selfish he can be at times, and I think because
@Gravitynaut8 жыл бұрын
his situation is his own fault, and he continues to do nothing about it, he kinda deserves everything he gets within the show. Also, the parodies I feel are clever and subversive enough to merit existing. The Purge one particularly, started out as just a Purge parody, but then really turned into something entirely it's own, and has some interesting implications for the characters of the show. The Lawnmower Dogs and Anatomy Park ones not only have some great jokes and ideas that are completely their own, but B plots that work and remain completely original, meaning the parody aspect of the episode never gets too overpowering. I'd say it's leagues above the stuff that other similar adult animations do, simply ripping off some current thing, making a joke, and calling it a parody. Rick and Morty's parodies are great because they still contain many aspects and concepts that at entirely original, and they are often used to make legitimate comments on the source material itself.

I swear to god, this is one of the greatest shows I have ever watched. If it weren't for how few episodes it has, it would have beaten SU, but for now, it's right above Bob's Burgers and Star vs the Forces of Evil (which are tied). The Plot: Oh god what a joy! Such mystery! Such cliffhangers! Those friggin universe-questioning heartbreaking endings! The Humor: While the improv in the Interdimensional Cable episodes went a bit to far, everywhere else it is an absolute joy! That and the various pop culture references are hilarious (Nintendo, five me free stuff)! And NEVER have I found dark humor so hilarious! The Characters: Rick and Morty are amazing for obvious reasons, Jerry is a character I love purely because of potential, and the humor from Rick treating him like crap, Beth has her moments but is ultimately sorta bland, and Summer would be great if she went on more of R&M's adventures (seriously, she would have been fantastic in the Purge episode). However, I really don't like Beth and Jerry's dynamic. Not because it doesn't lead to some great plots, because it does, but all of the development as a couple that they had in a previous episode! Honestly, if Jerry breaks Rick out of jail like I think he will and makes up with Beth, it would be perfect. The Animation: The backgrounds and action scenes are great, but I have one problem: the character animation and movement speed. Those parts seem a bit clunky, but are definitely not a turnoff. Oh, and the eyes.

What are your thoughts on the Summer/Car plot in the Microverse episode in Season 2?

I want to point out that in the pilot Rick said he built the car out of garbage. I know it's Rick here, but seeing the feats the car pulls off in the episode is something completely insane, even for Rick and Morty standards. I mean, precision lasers causing paralisys from the waist down and what I can only assume is a sort of gel that assumes lost loved ones to those the car is trying to defeat and lastly bringing two warring species together in harmony.

I had no idea if you'd ever review this show, but I'm happy that you did! If this was our symbolic trade-off for losing Aqua Teen, I'll take it (and don't get me wrong, I liked Aqua Teen a lot.) I really enjoyed improvisational cartoons like Home Movies, and of course Bob's Burger's got some of that in there, but this show takes it to a new level with that sentimentality, character development and occasional social commentary. The style reminds me of when my friends and I used to make up scripts for our own show as kids, off the top of our heads, so we both feel in love with it. Adult Swim has had shows with this dialog based humor since the beginning, but this is the first show to actually take that, and work it into an exciting story--that's why it doesn't come off as so much of a stoner comedy as the others.

What about Metalocalypse? That show looked pretty good, despite using Flash. They really knew how to make impressive visuals despite using flash, and believe it or not, it was actually the most expensive cartoon it took adult swim to make, since the reason there were constant hiatuses during seasons 3 and 4 as well as the show pretty much being stuck in limbo after The Doomstar Requiem was because due to the animation improving every season, it was costing more and more money for adult swim to produce and animate the show. I really do wish this show would come back with either a final season or a second movie that will serve as the finale, because this show, in my opinion, is too good to just be left hanging.

I think Beth and Jerry are supposed to be parodies of the kind of characters Pie is complaining about them being, while also taking things a step further and trying to make it feel a lot more like real people with real problems than those character archetypes usually are, however, sometimes it is played too cliche. I do find it kind of odd that Jerry is both one of my most hated characters (right next to Summer), but also one of the ones I find the most sympathetic (second to Morty)

It's annoying, to me at least, that the avatars of your face never quite fit into the circle thing. I actually can't imagine the show without Beth and Jerry. Their comparatively small squabbles give the show a dash of realism that really pays off when it collides with the more crazy elements. I couldn't stop laughing when they argued in front of that alien Rick was holding captive and he actually free's himself just so he can tell them how shitty he thinks they both are. I guarantee that initial growl when they both start arguing was fffuuuuck. The episode when they sought marriage counselling off world is one of my favorite too. Aside from that though, I understand how they can get stale but the execution of these character's has been pretty on point for me so far. Also, I kind of think Jerry is partly to blame for their lackluster marriage, as well as Beth. They both made some impulsive decisions that bit them in the ass and instead of trying to come together and resolve their issues like a healthy relationship, Beth stays bitter and Jerry resigns himself to being miserable. It doesn't sound pleasant but ends up leading to some comedy gold.

Pretty good review even if I kinda disagree on some little points. I loved the addition of the pupils btw! I started watching Rick & Morty thanks on Vinesauce and watched the whole first season with my sister, I loved it and could even follow the Season 2 episodes when they aired! Now, I just can't wait for Season 3. Personally, I wasn't really annoyed by Beth and Jerry's character.. But might be that I don't really care about them. Jerry's character can be pretty funny in some occasions when he tries hard to be funny but just come out as annoying or cringe. Meanwhile, Beth is okay but rarely pretty funny. They are just an excuse to make a family (adding Summer as the cliché teenage). Also, the Inception parody is one of my favorites episodes! It was pretty well-written in my opinion even if it's not an original idea, it's done in his own way while adding the subplot about the dog makes it pretty fresh for me. Me, I don't really like adult shows,I even dislike cartoons like Family Guy or that sort of thing. But this cartoon is so good that it's my second favorite show, I just love it

From what I've seen so far of this video as a diehard fan of everything Rick and Morty related so far, I like a lot of the video. I'm about 8 and a half minutes in and I agree with most of what you've said so far, I just wanted to bring up why I actually do like Jerry's character so much. I like him because he's just the polar opposite of Rick. Rick of course being that one of his character traits is that because he's seen so much, and constantly talks about how there is no god, he's really nihilistic, meaning that he knows that he probably doesn't matter and that he'll never have a significant effect on the universe, which is why he is so careless (Especially with the episode that doesn't fix the problem, you'll know what I mean if you've seen it, it's pretty legendary). Jerry on the other hand thinks that what he does matters, which is really explored in the episode with intelligent dogs. I personally hope this part of his character is explored more in upcoming seasons. Also I have to agree with you on the whole Beth/Jerry bickering thing, but I had a friend that found it really funny. I asked him why and he said it was because of how much his parents fought and how well the show puts a comedic spin on it. My parents never fought enough for me to be scarred or anything, so I really don't get it, but maybe that's the kind of people it appeals to.

Honestly their parody episodes are hit or miss if you ask me. I absolutely loved "Look Who's Purging Now" and "M. Night Shaym Aliens". Lawnmower Dogs was fine, but not that fun. I think the Purge one worked, due to Morty just....snapping, which I feel might be forshadowing that he has a darker side in him. Not only that, but even as someone who is very queezy at the sight of blood, I loved the fight scenes in this. M Night Shyamalan's, I loved due to it not being any specific film, but just being a parody of Shyamalan's repetitive nature, and a great example of showing how smart Rick is. On rewatch, I actually managed to catch on to the slight details that Morty was a simulation. Plus it was one of the very few episodes, where Jerry was actually funny. Lawnmower Dogs, the imagery was great, but not a great story. I love how they keep it ambiguous if as to if they hate or love Inception though. Anatomy Park was...eh. Not bad, but not to funny. Loved the bit at the end though.
