It’s no secret that Rick and Morty had an uphill battle this year. From a general waning interest in the show as a whole, to the fact that co-creator Justin Roiland was replaced by newcomers as the voices of BOTH Rick and Morty, the series had a LOT of work to do to prove itself. But somehow, against all odds, Rick and Morty just quietly had one of its best seasons in years. And has seemingly won over a lot of goodwill in the process, despite plenty of fans still being angry about the recast. Even I was planning to reel in my coverage of season 7 a bit, but after this latest season finale, there’s no way I couldn’t talk about the season as a whole. This year we got really fun one offs, one of the best major lore bomb episodes the show has ever done AND an incredible character-driven season finale, possibly my favorite season finale in the series. So I’m gonna go ahead and breakdown a few season highlights and go over that spectacular season finale.

People aren't talking about how big it is that Rick keeps a picture of Morty with him at all times. He usually wouldn't do anything that doesn't have intrinsic value or a larger purpose, so him doing that just for himself perfectly captures how he feels about his grandson. Sad things is that current Rick would never admit it.

While I agree with you completely that its huge with the picture, I look back to season 1 where he cried watching morty as a baby while his brain was scanned in S1 E10, it shows that rick has compassion for morty in a way that contradicts most other ricks.

@@Agentmeade123 That's why Morty (Morty Prime) is wrong to have this fear. Rick C-137 went to the Cronenberg dimension and squatted at the Smith's house because its Rick Prime's real family. But Rick has stayed with Morty Prime even when Rick Prime didn't take the bait. He's moved with Morty Prime through at least 3 family switches and stayed with Morty even after defeating Rick Prime. And he openly thanked Morty once this season and ended the season giving Morty his respect by pinning up that picture.

The line where Rick explains that he didn't jump in because the hole can't examine two fears at the same in case they cancel each other out felt significant. It's very possible that Rick's greatest fear is Morty no longer needing him (compounded by his loss of Diane) and in that, Morty would learn he isn't replaceable and Rick would learn that Morty would never leave him, cancelling out both fears.

The finale was something so unexpected, so mind boggling to me. It’s not something “canon”-based as they do in previous seasons, it’s an introspective deep dive into Morty’s ethos and the way he ticks. I was so shocked at the plot twist in the final minutes of the episode, and it sent my stomach into a pit feeling. The Hole’s speech about love and Rick had been captivated so much I watched it again at the end of the episode. This has shaped up to be my favorite episode of Rick and Morty. And the Mr. Poopy Butthole scene at the end was hilarious.

Its interesting because Morty in this episode is really doing all of the tricks he usually does, he takes advantage any way he can, "disrupting the simulation", tries every approach possible, and still gets it wrong until the very end. Like it was very in character for Morty, but you dont even know until the end of the episode. Just the type of thing Rick and Morty does best, you can almost predict half the things that will happen but somehow it still manages to surprise.

@calvin1786 I think we are going to see a new arc of Rick and Morty. Where Rick is trying to avoid being similar to Rick Prime. Then we have Morty as of now who's okay with fear and getting smarter. If you remember, "A Cocky Morty can lead to some big problems." So I'm guessing our Morty is going to slowly becoming a cocky/evil Morty. We'll have a slow continuous arc of Rick vs Morty. The ending being Rick-137 isn't like the rest because he's one of lost and chose to become a grandpa and stay with a Morty instead of creating a new evil Morty.

The one thing I greatly loved about this season is the clear "rick is trying" motif, he is going to therapy, he is setting boundary, he is trying to respect the family more and most of all, he is trying to do more "yes-and" with Morty without an over reliance on his snarky behavior. I honestly think the pet cemetery bit was a great example of this, where originally he tries to make Morty shut up, but then he was more receptive to the core idea Morty gave him. Seeing him grow and feel more real rather than an impossible person makes the show better. He doesn't have to solve all his emotional problems at once, he could even fall back, but this is a nice change of pace.

It feels like they're finally taking Rick's character to where they probably wanted it to go after Season 2. After such a big moment in that season's finale, the show seemed to backpedal for a while and not let Rick gradually change. This season feels like it's finally answering the fanbase's concern and is expanding on those loose threads, seeing as how there were so many season 1-2 references throughout this one.
@recoil53
@recoil53 5 ай бұрын
@@tastypotato9272 I think it's a combination of having that long term deal and Dan Harmon's influence. If a show is going from one season renewal to another, you don't plan long term story archs and you stick with what gets ratings (Rick being a sociopath). If you look at Community, Dan Harmon's original show, it was planned with the main character development from the start. A comedic sociopath slowly learning to change his ways.

The thing that really gets me about this finale is just how emotional the scenes between Rick and Dianne are. You really feel the weight of that decision Rick has to make for Morty. But then it all ends up just being inside of Morty's head. So as emotional as the Rick and Dianne stuff is, it's all from Morty's knowledge of Rick himself. When you actually break that fact down, Morty's empathy for his grandpa is on another level, and for as much crap as he does give Rick now, it shows that all Morty really wants is for Rick to find real happiness.

Like in seasons 3, 4, 5, and maybe 6 he’s treated as an untouchable god with like insta kill shields and an entire body of mechanisms, while season 1 and 2 have just be kinda smart and have like 2 gadgets in his pocket every mission. I think this season felt a lot more subtle than previous seasons. I think the reduced attention and coverage it got actually helped it in the long run. This season was quietly brilliant I think. It followed up on loose threads from previous seasons in such a natural way without making a big deal out of it. This also had some really good character studies especially the finale. Everything that happened with Roiland has heavily affected my perception and enjoyment of the show. Truthfully too much has changed for me to enjoy it the same way that I used to and I don’t think the show will get me back to that level but honestly it doesn’t need to. My favorite moment of the season was Rick looking down the Fear Hole and deciding not to go in and leaving Morty’s picture. The last week, before she passed, I was able to spend a lot of time with her, holding her hand, stroking her head, and making sure she was taken care of. It was the most beautiful and amazing sorrow that I've felt and I am so happy I got to be a part of that with her. Life is complicated, and even though it was scary and sad being there with her, the feelings were overshadowed by the promise I made her, which was to be there not letting her pass on alone. For very selfish reasons, I felt that being a part of her life at the end filled me with joy, and I can only hope that she felt safe and wasn't in pain.

I’m still not sure if the ending of That’s Amorte was a reference to Soylent Green, but damn was it a great sequence. We’ve definitely entered a new era of the show and I’m hyped to see more. Still really weird to think we’ve gone this far after only a decade. Feels shorter.

There were three or four themes of the episode depending on whether or not you lump one in with the other. Euthanasia, capitalism being depressing (and people trying not to feel bad about all the sweatshop labour that goes into their stuff) and internet trolling. I didn't really think that disclaimer needed to be at the start until it got to the scene where two aliens were telling a woman to kill herself. You could argue theme two was the same idea as Soylent Green, but the ending was to point out that the people you troll online have a life of their own.

I wouldnt mind seeing a season where rick essentially becomes a multiversal freedom fighter, going back to his roots when he was one with bird person. Essentially his goal is to re-engineer the infinite killing machine that rick prime used to kill diane and reverse it so it undoes the multiversal killing. Essentially giving every rick a choice to be what they want instead of what theyre forced to be

As soon as I finished the episode my first thought was "I cant wait to see Johnny's episode" bc i KNEW there was one coming 😂 The little moments between rick and diane were heartbreaking "Thats how we- how...i met my wife" Then the repeated fakeouts of climbing out of the hole getting more ridiculous cracked me the hell up And i legit had tears well up when Rick just pulled a photo of morty out of his wallet. That moment hit so hard and I loved it

This season proved to me a theory I have had for a while. That Justin Roiland is one of the main perpetrators for why Rick and Morty could not get past the self-loathing and nihilism that permeated so much of it. Now I’m not talking about the narrative, self-loathing and nihilism that is a key part of the shows humor and messages. I mean the fact that it seemed like the writers themselves hated themselves and their show and lacked so much confidence in their ability to do anything that they ruined everything. Now I am almost completely sure that it was the Man child Justin Roiland that is responsible for why the show sucked.

from what ive read, justin roiland was barely even involved with the show's writing after around season 3 and just sent in his lines over the internet. the writers probably could never go full steam ahead when their star voice actor never even showed up to work with them

You can tell the show changed because of how they approach continuity. Before they'd begrudgingly do a lore episode at the beginning or end of the season, full of meta jokes complaining it. But this season not only gave us a lore episode played completely straight, but they also threw in small references to Prime or Diane in episodes that had nothing to do with that storyline, showing that these new writers are a lot more comfortable with continuity.

Rickfriending Your Mort especially made me so happy. The equivalent episodes in Seasons 4 and 6 with the story train and meta commentary were so bloated and confusing. But in season 7, the framing went back to being simple yet satisfying, and there were so many great jokes in the various clips. Feels like something the show’s been missing for years.

The voices didnt even really sound that bad this episode, I barely noticed the voice and was more interested in what was going on. The ending itself was crazy, seeing rick not go in the hole and put Mortyd pic on the wall was so nice, just knowing rick kept that picture in the wallet was wholesome to me, really shows the character development

8:26 I’m trying to remember, didn’t Simple Rick also have his Diane still prior to the Citadel capturing him? I thought because of his divergent nature it set him on a separate timeline from all the super science stuff, which would’ve spared his Diane from the bomb which seemed to hit the Diane’s of the Ricks who did pursue science over their relationship.

the finale was fantastic! it’s hands down my favourite episode of rick and morty and imo their best episode yet as well. (i also really loved the spaghetti suicide episode, incredibly well done as well) i loved that it took everything that you’d expect it to play and twist it multiple times, it worked so well and i was shook. it was so well written and such a great character analysis for morty who i felt was hung out on the sidelines most of this season. it’s finally delved more into his character. the scenes with rick and diane were so wholesome but also a little tear jerking knowing it’s not real 🥲 the twist of rick not going in the whole and revealing mortys actual greatest fear was amazing! they way the dudes voice just start speaking out of a hollowed rick was awesome, so well executed. it was just perfect and obviously made the most sense (like obviously his greatest fear is relying on rick, we, or at least i knew that since season 1 BUT the way they played this still left the reveal to feel shocking) this was just a perfect rick and morty episode. and when rick ran back to the hole not to jump in to see diane but to pin a photo of morty- which he keeps in his wallet!!- on the board bcuz he’s proud of him aghhhhhh! 🥺😭 like i love this episode sm. i really enjoyed and loved this season! i really think this is one of their best ones yet! but i do have to say the ice t letters vs numbers episode was a super flop for me, like it was so bad and i got nothing out of it🙃 other than that this season was super strong with really fresh and creative stories!
